Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. The year is slowly moving ahead and at the time of writing this we are following a Government roadmap which will gradually bring us out of ‘lockdown’ and let’s hope in the months to come we can start seeing a return to normal life pre-covid. Easter is early this year with Good Friday on the second of April and Easter Sunday on the fourth. I hope we are lucky weather wise and have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors accompanied with a good dose of sunshine. It might even be a chance for either the first picnic or barbecue of the year. This is also a great time to relax and get stuck into our puzzle section on pages 14 and 15. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust have launched a new ‘Waste of Space’ public appeal and need your help to turn unloved spaces in our towns and cities into vital natural space for people and wildlife. See page 13 for more information. If you never want to miss out reading ‘your local community magazine’ you can now subscribe to either our printed or digital subscription each month and you can find more details on page 5. As usual you will find this issue packed with news and information and we have a special middle pull out section for candidates standing in the upcoming election. I hope you have a great Easter and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Everyone is looking forward to the shops reopening this month and Newport Business Association has set up a Blooming Newport hanging basket scheme to celebrate. Care in the Garden are creating displays in yellow, blue and white, traditional Newport colours, also representing the NHS and hope. With lots of businesses taking part it will make a lovely show to welcome people back to town. Thanks go to Fiona from The Dapper Chap for organising this.
The High Street Heritage Action Zone is going well, and our website has just launched www.iwhaz.uk and you can find out exactly what the project is about and keep up to date with the progress. The design guide is being put together at the moment and will be ready by June, this will be adopted by the IW as a supplementary planning document and will greatly assist planners with guidance on new developments and shop front treatments.
Independent Arts will be re-opening their community hub in St James’s Square soon (where Monsoon used to be) The Creative Hub will feature exhibitions from Independent Arts community programmes across the Island, as well as opportunities to engage with arts for wellbeing activities. Independent Arts are delighted to be launching this major new project which it hopes can contribute to the regeneration of the High Street.
Local artist and author Jules Marriner is producing a set of colouring sheets depicting 3 scenes from Newport’s past and present. They will be available to download very soon.
Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council is undertaking different types of surveys at the moment on the High Street building it’s looking at purchasing. Being an older building, we need to be as informed as much as possible before completing the purchase. Historic England are funding a feasibility study for how the building can be reconfigured for our use. It’s important it has an active frontage as we want to contribute to the regeneration of the High Street with this project as well as invest in permanent accommodation for the Council - we have rented space for the past 13 years. We are looking at creating a Newport Historic Centre, space for a pop-up shop, space for our meetings, reception area for the Council and office accommodation. I’ll keep you informed about the progress.
I have had my first meeting since securing some funding to go towards improving the pedestrian environment in Mill Street. We had IWC Highways, Island Roads and IWC Active travel officers present to discuss the way forward. It’s a difficult situation to address as some of the road is not in control of the IWC yet and there’s serious drainage issues in one particular location on the road. There are things that can be done though, so it’s just a case of starting somewhere sensible. Work has started on an abandoned piece of land at the bottom of Holyrood Street, to create a Biosphere Garden, my project with Artecology to bring the IW UNESCO Biosphere to more people.

Local elections are taking place on Thursday 6th May. Not all candidates took up the offer but for those who did we have produced a handy section for you to pull out and keep.
If you are worried about leaving home to attend the polling station there is still time to apply for a postal vote. You have until 5pm on Tuesday 20th April to apply. News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 It was with great disappointment that I observed the new tyre marks made across the grass verge at the Priory viewpoint car park. Sadly, this had just been re-seeded to cover up the previous tyre marks….probably made by the same 4 x 4 that was observed making the ones pictured below. I find it totally appalling to think that the cones protecting the new grass had only been removed the day before and then this was done. We as, taxpayers, pay for the upkeep of areas such as this and should be able to enjoy them without the selfish and unkind actions of others. This problem occurs in other areas around Carisbrooke….Froglands Lane frequently has its verges churned up by joy riders in 4x4 vehicles, not to mention those who enjoy driving at speed through the fords! Please feel free to report anyone that you see causing such damage although it seems there is little that can be done to stop them.
Due to COVID our planned walk with the Environment Agency and Southern Water, along the river course of the Lukely Brook, could not take place in person, however we were given a virtual walkover with very interesting updates on how these streams 10
and surrounding lands are going to be improved and maintained going forward. There are great plans afoot to help improve the ecosystems around and along this chalk stream, and as I have mentioned before the installation of fish passes is well underway (Carisbrooke Mill, Carisbrooke Pumping Station and Wellington Road) I feel that this is all good news and also believe that after a year of confinement, where people have enjoyed their recreational time outdoors, that the interest in maintaining our environment has grown on a more personal level. In fact, I am still getting comments and queries from people who have found a new enjoyment in litter picking! Anything we can do to help our environment is good, for example….do you walk along the beach? If so, then keep a look out for ‘nurdles’….you might wonder what a nurdle is….well I can tell you….it’s a multicoloured tiny (less than 5mm) plastic ball. There are millions of these that escape and find their way into our drainage systems and eventually onto our beaches and into the Solent….where they are beginning to cause a serious problem to wildlife as they get ingested by seabirds and fish. They are the raw material for making plastic items so until we use less plastic in our lives nurdles will continue to be a problem. If you come across a quantity of these please report them on 0800 807060. Tracking them and finding ways to clear them from our waters is becoming quite a priority. Better if we can prevent them getting there in the first place! Promoted by John Hobart, South Farm Cottage, Sandy Lane, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 3EA

Chocolate Chip Cookies You can’t beat a homemade chocolate chip cookie and the great thing with this easy recipe is you can adapt it to include fruits, nuts and your favourite sweets. Ingredients • 250g butter, softened • 350g light soft brown sugar • 2 large eggs • 350g self-raising flour • 100g cocoa powder • 200g chocolate chips or chopped chocolate chunks, or 400g for optional dipping Method STEP 1 Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl until light and fluffy, then beat in the eggs one at a time. Sift the flour and cocoa powder and beat into the butter mix, then fold through the chocolate chips. STEP 2 Line two backing sheets with parchment paper and evenly place a spoonful of the mixture. Bake for 12-15 mins until spread out and crusty around the outside. Leave to cool slightly and enjoy warm, or leave to cool completely and eat cold. The biscuits will keep in a tin for three days. STEP 3 As an optional extra, the biscuits can be dipped in chocolate. To do this, melt your chosen type of chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water or in the microwave. Leave to cool a little, then dip half of each biscuit in the chocolate and leave them on parchment paper lined trays somewhere cool to set.

Waste of Space Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust launch public appeal to help turn unloved spaces in our towns and cities into vital natural space for people and wildlife. Natural and wild places have provided a lifeline for people across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire over the past year, providing essential outside space to relax, exercise, play and spend time with friends and family. Access to these wild spaces and connection to nature is known to benefit people’s physical and mental health, leading to reductions in depression, anxiety and obesity and strengthening people’s immune systems. However, the pandemic has highlighted vast inequalities in access to green and natural spaces. One in eight households have no garden and rely entirely on public open spaces, particularly in urban areas. In a survey conducted by the Trust in June 2020, over 96% of people said that nature played an important role in relieving stress during lockdown and expressed a need for more natural space in our towns and cities. Urban wild spaces create healthier communities, reduce loneliness and social isolation and provide safe places for children to play. They also provide cleaner air, combat climate change, help reduce flooding and act as havens for wildlife as part of a county-wide Nature Recovery Network. The Trust is asking local people to map the ‘wasted space’ in their communities, the unloved scraps of land around our houses and streets that could, and should, do much more for people and nature. This could include tall buildings with the potential to have swift boxes on, paved over surfaces which could be filled with colourful planters or simply a space which needs a litter pick and a place to sit to transform it. The Trust want local people to help find creative ways to make space for nature within our towns and cities. Debbie Tann, CEO of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, says: “Wildlife has been squeezed into smaller and smaller spaces just at the time when people need nature more than ever for their health and wellbeing. Our Wilder 2030 campaign is calling for 30% of land and sea to be restored for nature by 2030, and for people to join us in taking action for wildlife. This must be the decade of nature’s recovery and rewilding our lives. Any area, no matter how small, will contribute to a Nature Recovery Network, and help rewild where we live. This will help transform towns and cities into places where wildlife can thrive and people are happier and healthier.” “Our Wilder Communities Officers, will provide support and advice, including how to talk to your local council, ways to identify what wildlife might already be living in your community, and how to make a space that benefits people and wildlife. We’ll also be engaging with local councils and landowners to get their support so they can work together with communities to make changes which create better urban spaces for everyone.” Together we can rewild where we live.
