Welcome to the August issue and if you are a regular reader of Island Magazines I would like to take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of myself, advertisers and contributors for picking up a copy and supporting this popular community magazine. If you have only recently come across this publication I hope you find it an interesting read? Our main aim is to play a key part in the local community by sharing local news, information and supporting local businesses by offering them a platform to promote themselves and the services they offer. I always like to give a little mention about the weather, and all I have to say this month is wow.... it’s been hot! The Island is getting busy and the calendar is full with local events and carnivals and you can find details of these on pages 12, 13 & 14. There is a lot of hard work from volunteers in the preparation of these events and I hope you get the chance to enjoy some or all of the carnivals that the various towns host. It’s what summer on the Isle of Wight is all about. I hope you all have a great August and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07970009908 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Things have been busy as ever in Newport and I have been looking ahead to next year already, planning projects and events. Thanks must go to the IW Council and Police for working together to get the fence erected on the Church Litten side of the Library, reducing the anti-social behaviour in the area. At the same time at the Parish Council, we are looking at ways we can help support Youth Services which are no longer provided by the IW Council. The plan on what the Parish Council will be doing over the next few years is being fleshed out at the moment and I am organising a consultation event for residents to come along to. Save the date, it will be on Saturday 6th October, Riverside Centre, 10-2. It will be a good opportunity to feed into our ideas of what we have in mind for Newport and Carisbrooke. Tell us straight what you think! I’m really looking forward to a new person coming on board at the IW Council, to help with getting the Shaping Newport outcomes, delivered. They will work on things like more events, working with businesses and community groups to improve the offer and environment of the County Town. They will be part of the Regeneration Team and will enable more joined up working which will enable quicker results. I’ve had some “Disabled” signs erected on the junctions around Mill St/Crocker St/ Foxes Rd as an interim measure to alert drivers to the needs of pedestrians in the area. As you may recall, I campaigned against Mill St being opened into Foxes Rd and when that was an inevitability I switched my attention to getting a crossing installed as 4
part of the new road. Fast forward 5 years and predictions have come true that it is a popular route now for vehicles and the design of the road makes it difficult to cross. There’s a lot to consider at the moment, as the new junctions at St Mary’s, Coppins Bridge and Riverway will have some impact on the traffic in Mill Street. The timing of my study into interventions to improve the pedestrian environment is perfect, as the area of Mill Street has been highlighted with a scheme for cycling and walking. I am presenting this to senior officers at the IW Council later this month. There is also a scheme to vastly improve the environment around Holyrood Street/Sea Street, as again it’s a highly populated area and the design of the road encourages vehicles to drive too fast. The 20 mph campaign is running alongside these physical interventions. I want Newport to be a safer and more pleasant place to live and visit. I have been shown the improved junction scheme for St Mary’s and it does seem to be a better solution, however there is still no planned cycle lane past the dual carriageway and I have my concerns about any increased traffic along Hunnyhill. I have asked for a crossing on Hunnyhill near the Hookes Way junction, as I feel this is necessary to create a people first environment. After all the dual carriageway was built to take traffic off Hunnyhill!

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 I very much enjoyed the Carisbrooke Fete at the Eight Bells again this year, so much effort goes into organising events such as this, so a big well done to all those involved. Our Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council stand attracted many visitors and it was a great opportunity for Cllr Martin and myself to meet people and chat about what is going on behind the scenes. More recently we held an Environmental Conference which attracted some 187 participants, including some eminent professors of environmental science as well as leaders of local industry. There were some very interesting ideas and lots of active discussion about the ways we can nurture our wonderful island and develop strategies to keep it as environmentally friendly as we can. At the conference we announced our bid to become a UNESCO Biosphere. A Biosphere celebrates the uniqueness of the environment and the community. It aims to protect these whilst maintaining healthy development of the economy and human wellbeing. If we achieve this status we will become one of 6 biospheres in the Uk, and part of the network of some 669 reserves in 120 countries. The aim of the Isle of Wight Biosphere is to encourage active involvement of the community, to achieve sustainable development, unify approaches to sustainable development
and to improve policy and practical delivery. If we achieve this status another benefit will be the ability to link with other biospheres around the world and this in turn will provide opportunities for green tourism as well as the intrinsic benefits to those who live and work here. I attended the Romanov Memorial weekend events, based primarily around East Cowes, but also a wonderful Russian Orthodox service in the lovely chapel, in Carisbrooke Castle. The event included the unveiling of a beautiful monument on the Jubilee Park in East Cowes remembering the lives of the Tsar Nicolas ll and his wife and family who were executed July 1918. The significance of East Cowes in this event is that the family, in happier times, spent many holidays enjoying the freedom of life at Osborne House and Barton Manor (where a wonderful exhibition of photographs were on display) The attendees for the event included Prince Rostislav Romanov, the Tsar’s Great Great Nephew, and many other representatives of the Romanoff Society, and the Russian Orthodox Church. One of the highlights for me was listening to the singing of a choir of nuns who came from Minsk for the occasion and truly had the voices of angels. Moving closer to home, I have now had continued over the page
News Report from John Hobart continued confirmation about the lines on Cedar Hill. These will be put in place at the end of July/start of August. The effect of these will be to create a no parking zone between 8am and 6pm each day with the exception of Sunday when all day parking will be allowed. (West side of the road) The East side of the road will be a ‘no parking at any time’ zone. Hopefully this will go a long way towards sorting out the traffic chaos in this area whilst not removing all important overnight parking. This will be for a trial period of 18 months, and if successful will become permanent. Again I will re-iterate that I am working hard to get a better parking situation in the area, I know that it is frustrating, but it could be aided by those who have off road parking ensuring that they use it in order to free up road parking for those who don’t. I do see a quite few unused drives in the area!

“Open for business and ready to share the garden love!” “We offer a service especially for seniors called Companionship Gardening - you could say it’s similar to companionship planting, but instead of plants helping each other to thrive in the garden, humans help each other to thrive instead! I enable clients to manage their garden maintenance by providing some extra muscle and working to the client’s exact specification. We also offer a basic Garden Maintenance service, for those who appreciate a tidy garden but despise garden chores or who are very busy bees with limited free time. Thirdly, for the folks who don’t have their own garden but enjoy spending time outdoors and love to partake in garden/nature-based outings, our Social Buddy service may interest you. In retirement we can often find that family and friends are not always available to join in with the outdoor activities we love which keep us happy and healthy, so if you enjoy company why not hire yourself a cheerful and reliable chauffer and companion for the day - Call the Island Garden Angel!”
