News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans I’m sorry to announce that Newport was unsuccessful in our bid for £8m from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Future High Streets Fund. It’s particularly disappointing as the Government said that there would be a geographic spread across the country. This map shows where the £350m pot is being distributed. Anyway not to be deterred, Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council have put in a bid for some Historic High Street funding, a much more modest cultural led regeneration proposal for the town centre, working with our Shaping Newport partners. Historic England have recently visited Newport and were impressed with the wealth of our historic buildings and our intact medieval street layout. They have encouraged us to put in a proposal, so we have taken some of the proposals in the Future High Street application. The main idea is to improve the pedestrian environment in St James’s Square and the length of the High Street to St Thomas’s Square, to create a grant fund to improve the buildings and put on cultural events for residents and visitors. Our goal is to make our town physically more accessible and reveal our built and social history. From now until 30th August is our chance to look at and feedback on options for the Newport Harbour Masterplan. 30 High Street is open from Tuesday to Friday, 10 - 4pm for anyone to pop in, see the exhibition, watch the video flythrough and talk to the team. There’s
a dedicated website which shows the ideas and a survey - you can go straight to question 10 if you want to leave a general comment. The plan shows the potential layout of a new conference centre, hotel, housing, public square, footpaths, industrial uses, cafes, higher education, moorings and a foot/cycle bridge linking the east and west sides. Please take the opportunity to have a look, as the IW Council does want to hear your thoughts. I feel that the chance to have a landmark building for cultural uses and a decent hotel situated near Medina Way is exciting. The Island doesn’t have conferencing facilities that are big enough to attract national organisations, so this could really help make Newport a destination. The housing on Fairlee Road looks quite modest and will create much needed homes in a great location. Fundamental to the plan is to have a public walkway on the East side of the river and foot/cycle bridge crossing the Medina (linking to Hurstake Road on the West) which will open up the river and town. www.masterplanfornewportharbour.co.uk At our recent parish council meeting a member of the public asked if a Community Speed Watch could be set up as they are so fed up of Carisbrooke Road becoming a race track in the evenings and early mornings. I have contacted the police to see what the next stages are to get a scheme set up. Resident Parking Zones are moving forward and ware getting close to asking residents to vote for their street to become a RPZ. I’m so pleased we are finally making progress, after years of waiting.

Blankets of Animals is a small charity set up by animal lover Sam English. With the help of local residents who have been making a steady stream of six and 12 inch knitted and crocheted squares which in turn go to Sam who makes them into blankets. Sam then posts to animal shelters on the Island and across the UK. Sam also collects knitted dog coats and fully made blankets and she would like to give a big shout out to all readers to see if anyone is interested in knitting squares, making the final blankets or helping with posting the packages. David is a ‘hobby photographer’ but started out in his school days as an artist, drawing and painting subjects that caught his eye and on occasions a bit of photography with a box camera. He then moved on to a different type of art and made a career as an antique restorer/french polisher but when digital cameras first appeared on the scene his interest in photography returned and has now become an extension of his art. What David would have previously painted he can now capture with his camera. His images are for his own personal use but are gaining plenty of attention when shared via social media. David says “there is no way in the world I could take photos to order – the subject has to be something that just catches my eye” and I am sure everyone will agree that this picture really does catch the eye.

Monthly News Report from Cllr John Hobart. Member for Carisbrooke and Gunville E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 It was a great pleasure, on Sunday 14th July, to attend the celebration of 100 years of Girlguiding held at Carisbrooke Castle. The guides had arranged a display about guiding in the museum and the event was well attended, and supported by Carisbrooke residents, our Island High Sheriff, Geoff Underwood. The first company of guides was formed on the Island in 1912 and many more followed over time, with many all Island gatherings as well as the individual companies being active in their own right. If you would like to learn more about the history of Guiding on the Isle of Wight a most interesting book has been written by another of our Carisbrooke residents, Suzanne Whitewood, detailing the progress of guiding on the Island over the past 100 years. Including many photographs from each decade. ‘Moments in Time’ is well worth a look! I’m pleased to say that the fete at Carisbrooke was a great success and a fabulous opportunity for our newly elected parish councillor for the NCPC, Joe Lever, to man the stand with Cllr Terry Martin, and introduce himself to local residents. Thank you also to Lucy, our Clerk, for giving up her time on the day (I was attending the Biosphere Mardi Gras in Ryde, as a member of the AONB Steering Committee this year and so only made the start and finish of the fete.)
you can return one by post. Your feedback is important. There is also a website where you can view the proposal at www. masterplanfornewportharbour.co.uk (The website has a link to an online survey) I joined the Woodland Forum Group on a visit in the Carisbrooke area recently. Partly to view a very rare plant, Wood Calamint, (Clinopodium Menthefolium) who’s habitat is confined to the Isle of Wight. It grows on chalk scrub and on Woodland edges. I was much saddened, on my forest walk, to see the number of Ash trees suffering from the fungus, Ash dieback. (Hymenoscyphus Fraxineus) This disease can be recognised by the leaf loss and crown die back in infected trees. Sadly it has become a well established disease and may often account for the removal of, what at first glance, appear to be healthy established trees... the problem is the risk on highways or public paths, although in woodland areas they will be left to see which ones, if any, can survive.
I was saddened to hear of the death of my predecessor as councillor for Carisbrooke and Gunville, Barbara Foster. Barbara represented the area as a councillor for some 22 years and during that time was a force I attended the Newport Harbour User Group, to be reckoned where we had a most interesting presentation with. She worked regarding the future of Newport Harbour. tirelessly for The presentation was given by Kay Elliott, the architects appointed as part of the consultation her ward and the wellbeing who have produced plan and information of its residents leaflets which are available for viewing at the and will be exhibition based at 30 High Street Newport (just opposite the Guildhall). The exhibition will remembered for run until the 30th August and after viewing you her achievements can complete a survey form at the exhibition or on their behalf. 14
