Hello and welcome to the August issue of Island Magazines. It’s hard to believe that over half the year has passed already and I think 2020 is ertainly going to be a year no one will ever forget! I would like to thank everyone that got in touch to comment how nice it was to see us back in print. Your kind words mean a lot and thank you for supporting your local community magazine. Lockdown has been a busy time for local charity Feline Welfare who were inundated with homeless and stray cats and new kittens. Nikki and her team of foster parents have been kept on their toes ensuring the cats have stayed safe during this period but the time has come to find forever homes for many of them. Our article on page 6 features just a few of the ones ready to move on and they are eagerly waiting by the phone ready for you to call and meet them. On the subject of animals, don’t you think the front cover picture is amazing? We are lucky to have so many talented photographers on the island and you can find the story behind this months star on page 11. This month we have included a rather unusual recipe. Some of you will already be avid fans but some many never of heard of it - check out page 8 and let us know what you think. The easing of more lockdown restrictions has begun and it is down to us all to play our part in ensuring the virus does not spread. As always please take care and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 As we move out of lockdown further I imagine that we all have mixed feelings about things moving forward. I believe that this is a time where we need to be even more cautious and alert of our actions as it’s easy to forget that the virus is still out there. I know that there are different views about wearing masks, but I was most interested in an article I listened to on the World Service describing the habits of the Japanese, whose culture dictates that they all wear masks at times of virus, any virus whether its standard winter flu or something as vile as Covid-19 19. In Japan the numbers of deaths have been far, far lower than anywhere else in the world (7 deaths per 1m population compared to America with, as I write 400 deaths per 1m, and to my horror and astonishment the UK has 650 deaths per 1m population). This may suggest that masks are a useful tool in the prevention of spread? I for one support the wearing of masks in public places and urge you to consider taking this as a sensible option. Over the recent few weeks many services have been reopening and more to come in the future. These services are being fully Covid risk assessed and planned in a way that allows some normality whilst still giving the greatest protection possible. Clearly all of these will only work with the compliance of those using them. Libraries are reopening in stages, starting with click and collect and moving on to self service. If you have books that you have borrowed before lockdown please return them, you won’t be fined and the books will be quarantined (for 72 hours) before being put out for loan again.
There is also a plan for the reopening of leisure centres and swimming pools. You will be expected to book your slot, arrive ready to take your exercise and leave again within your allocated time and without using changing rooms or other leisure centre facilities. The numbers of people allowed in at any time will be tightly controlled, hence the booking system. Initially there will be use of the gym equipment from hopefully 27th July (equipment will be sanitized after each use) and pools opening to swimming clubs hopefully from 3rd August. We will be reviewing how successfully this is working and adjusting the risk assessment accordingly with a view to open for lane swimming for members at staggered times to gym use, before moving on to running small exercise classes and small aquacise classes. (If all goes according to plan these further options will commence from 10th August) Children’s play areas have also reopened. These will be cleaned from time to time and but my advice would be to carry and use hand sanitizer and of course encourage social distancing by your children and with other parents using the play areas. Sadly Covid-19 has caused the cancellation of most public events that we all enjoy so much. The music festivals of course, but also the Royal IOW Agricultural Show. This is sad as, after a few years of struggling, last year saw a revitalisation for the show and the promise of a great event this year. Another event that many of continued over the page
News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke us love so much is the New Forest Show, which has also been cancelled. This year would have seen the 100th Anniversary of the show, so particularly sad, not only for the visitors, but also for the equestrian competitors and agricultural community. We must hope that these shows are able to come back bigger and better next year. All of the above news is going to be dependent of the ‘R’ number and so it is up to all of us to do our bit to keep ourselves safe and to consider the wellbeing of others. Although we work towards normality I don’t think we will find our idea of normality until a vaccine is available. In the meantime please stay safe, stay alert, control the virus.

Cloud Bread Like many others I have recently ‘tweaked’ my diet and one of the main things I’ve given up/cut down on is carbs but one thingt I am really missing is bread. On my quest to find an alternative that wasn’t carb loaded I came across ‘cloud bread’, duly named for it’s light fluffy texture. I was promised it will satisfy my cravings without undoing any of the benefits I have already achieved. For those who don’t know, Cloud Bread is high in protein and extremely low in carbs, making it the perfect sandwich bread for those on a low carb, gluten free, or grain free diet. They take a bit of getting used to but are so easy to make and you can freeze them or keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Here is my simple tried and tested recipe. Ingredients 4oz cream cheese 3 egg yolks 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 egg whites Salt and pepper Method Heat over to 150C/130C fan/gas2 and line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. In a large bowl whisk the egg whites with the baking powder using an electric whisk, until stiff peaks form. In another bowl whisk together the egg yolks and cream cheese until smooth, pale and frothy. Add salt and pepper. Next, fold the egg whites a spoonful at a time into the yolk mixture. Be as gentle as you can so you don’t knock out too much of the air. Carefully dollop the mixture onto the prepared baking sheets and gently spread into even 4 inch circles. If the mixture is a little runny when you get to the bottom of the bowl don’t use the last few spoonfuls - only use the fluffy mix on top. Makes approximately 6. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden in colour. Allow to cool for a few moments before carefully removing with a palette knife. 8

Skype and Hypnotherapy Times are changing and with these changes we must find new ways to carry on living and dealing with issues that affect our lives. Den Clare is a well know name across the Island and has worked with thousands of local residents helping them with a wide range of issues. With Covid-19 still fresh in all our minds, Den took the initiative to continue helping and supporting his clients through the pandemic by holding consultations via Skype. They are a big success as his clients can relax in their favourite chair or in bed, be warm and cosy while feeling safe and this helps them to drift into alpha rhythm relaxation and let go of controlling restrictions which were so annoying and blighting their life.

Den Clare has now been in practice for DENCLARE3@GMAIL.COM 40 years. He first studied complementary medicines at the age of 15 and has been a registered healer with the National Federation of Healers since 1976. His Hypnotherapy training began in 1968 and is still ongoing. I asked Den if he could explain what Hypnotherapy is and how it works:-
“Hypnotherapy involves the relaxation of the conscious mind to enable reprogramming of the subconscious, which is merely a computer. Having said that it is the most complex and amazing computer of which we understand very little. From a very early age we are conditioned by suggestions from parents, social groups, religion and various other sources, many of which are very negative and attach firmly to the deeper mind. The effect can be felt many years later and can be very controlling. Repetition strengthens habits. So, stopping smoking, losing weight, gaining confidence, coping with stress and many other debilitating actions can be changed for the better. Hypnotherapy allows these unwanted habits to be tackled, and with the introduction of Skype this can be achieved without even leaving home”. Act now and call Den on 866999 to discuss your needs and how he can help. Typical problems which Den can deal with include, weight loss, stopping smoking, exam nerves, eating disorders, fear of flying, tension, lack of confidence, nail biting to name but a few!

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Our community, in fact the whole world has been through an enormous time of stress and slowly we are beginning to emerge. Once again we are able to see our friends and family, have a coffee, go shopping and it’s starting to feel a little bit like normal again. It’s been great to see all our shops, cafes and hairdressers etc adapt to the necessary changes, looking after their customers as they welcome them back. I know some people feel anxious still about coming back out and aren’t happy about the idea of wearing masks but if we can each do our little bit to protect ourselves then we are protecting others in return. Don’t forget Newport has a Community Connector if you or someone you know is feeling isolated. Independent Arts are still delivering community events, mostly online but soon will be able to hold them face to face again. Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council have been holding informal online meetings the last couple of months but in September we hope to hold a formal meeting although this may be online. We are working on how the public can access to listen and watch the meeting and of course there will be the ability to send in questions for the council to respond to. Post Office Lane toilets are going full steam ahead. The old building has been demolished and is being taken away, services being installed after the archeologist has done an inspection. Then very soon afterwards the new building will 10
be put in its place. We will then follow up with remedial works and landscaping to make the area safe and pleasant. The new toilets will be pay to use, very modern and easy to clean. We are also having a contactless payment option which will save looking for change to spend a penny! With a green roof using sedum plants and enamel cladding the new building will certainly brighten up this old alley and provide much needed conveniences. The Community Council has agreed to provide new lights for the fire station. I think all of us who live in Newport and our visitors love seeing the tower with its Christmas tree lights, marking the start of the season. The High Street Heritage Action Zone continues to make progress and the first community engagement project is being developed which will seek to give an understanding of what the HSHAZ is all about. The scope of the design code for buildings is also being written so we can look for an organisation to do it. This will help guide any renovation work so that it fits into the town. This document will be part of the IW Council’s planning documents so will hold weight when applications come in. Once the shop front improvement grants begin we will really see an improvement. Please do get in touch with me regarding any issue you think I can help with.

Well Hello There… All I can say about this month’s front cover picture is WOW… I’m sure you will all agree with me that the photo is stunning and is all thanks to local photographer Tara Harvey.
