Gus Jonsson is one of the Isle of Wight’s most sensitive and descriptive storytellers. Vectis Days, his second volume of autobiographical memoirs is out now. Like volume one, Vectis Voices, it continues his childhood memories of growing up on the island, exploring themes of family, friendships, forbidden loves, health and wellbeing and social acceptance in a post-war working-class society. Vectis Voices and Vectis Days are essential reading for islanders and available now from Ryde Bookshop - 135 High St, Ryde, W.J. Nigh & Sons - Shanklin, and direct from www.brandicat.com

Whilst writing this the sun is shining, the temperature is in the early to mid-20’s and it looks like Summer has arrived... but I am also aware that this can change at the drop of a hat and one part of the island may be enjoying the sun and yet another area at the same time can be taking shelter from the rain. s summer finally here???
We are very lucky to be surrounded by some amazing beaches that are just perfect for swimming and are ideal on those hot days when nothing is more refreshing than a dip in the sea, whether it’s just your big toe, up to your knees or are really brave and commits fully to the task in hand. Inside this issue you will find news, information, some great advertisers, the puzzle pages, our ‘dates for your diary’ section and much more. Our aim has always been to reach out to the community to share news and information and if you have community news you want to share, please get in touch with us via any of the means below. I hope you have a great August and get the chance to enjoy the freedom of meeting up with family and friends after such a long break and you get to enjoy our beautiful island which, come rain or shine, is one of the best places to live. Keep safe and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Good news for this month, the Isle of Wight has become an official partner in Southampton’s bid to become the City of Culture 2025. This accolade has proven to bring huge economic and social benefits to the host cities both in the year itself and in the run-up years. Newport has a natural link to Southampton as you can sail directly up the Medina across the Solent and into Southampton waters. We have been trading this route for many hundreds of years. The final shortlist of 6 cities will be announced in September and they will then submit a final bid in November, the 2 finalists will then be announced in January and the ultimate winner in May. Very exciting opportunity for the island that I’m getting a lot of support for. Talking of cities, under the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations she will be granting a small number of new city status to some towns and places are being encouraged to apply. Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council agreed to support an application for Newport to be granted City Status. Our market on Saturday is doing really well with added activities each week for everyone, we’ve had music, wellbeing, drawing, drumming and historical displays. Market Days are behind this initiative and are really doing a great job of putting the heart back into our Market Town heritage. The High Street Heritage Action Zone is working away still, and we will have the design guide ready for public consultation soon. I’ve had a sneak preview and the ideas to uplift some of our existing
buildings into being more in character of the original and of the area are great. I think this project gives a good opportunity to bring out our built heritage and put some pride back into Newport. Don’t forget Victoria Recreation Ground is a lovely space to be this summer, plenty of room for playing and picnicking. The Pavilion now has ice cream for sale too! Many residents have voiced concerns regarding the application in the former Pizza Express for it to become a French style bar. I have brought the application to Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council Planning and Consultation Committee for discussion and to put in formal comments. Please get in touch with me or Licensing@iow.gov.uk if you want to add any further comments. I managed to have a few days away recently to see family that I hadn’t seen for 18 months which was wonderful. Whilst away I went to Barry Island to visit Goodsheds which is a retail, office and cafe development using shipping containers. I was very impressed and thought it might make a good project for Newport Harbour. Have a look at their website www.goodshedsbarry.co.uk Finally, the Community Speed Watch is looking for volunteers for the first tranche of approved roads, Clatterford, Staplers, Gunville, Forest, Long Lane and Noke Common. If you could volunteer a couple of hours, please get in touch with Holly Deacon.holly.deacon.17798@hampshire. pnn.police.uk or call 07880056672.

We need volunteers to: • help provide a supportive environment for those visiting the John Cheverton Centre. • support one of our 10 Mountbatten shops across the Island? • help in our Sunflower Café in the weekday evenings and daytime at the weekends. • become a ‘Mountbatten Neighbour’ supporting someone near you by visiting for a cuppa and offering a ‘listening ear’? • support those who have been bereaved – both with our Bereavement Helpline and with face to face and group support. She is fully covid compliant and can offer any service you would expect to receive in a salon. News Report from Cllr Joe Lever - Carisbrooke & Gunville Mobile - 07736 663 657 | Email - joe.lever@iow.gov.uk Facebook - @CllrJoeLever | Instagram - @cllrjoelever Hello, Update time… The Castle Lodge application was approved but with the stipulation of a 3-year review. It turns out that the review affected the funding for the project which has now left it in doubt. It’s been communicated that Two Saints are therefore seeking to remove the review from the application approval. If you have a view on this, please do get in touch. At the time of writing this, I am still waiting on an update regarding the applications off Arthur Moody Drive. Once I have one, I’ll be attempting to communicate with residents in the area. I’ve already met with a group of residents on site to talk about concerns (flooding, increase in cars, roads, etc…) so I have a good grasp on the issues. On to roads. Myself and Cllr Terry Martin met with a council officer and Island Roads, on-site, to discuss issues with the area of road at the bottom of Cedar Hill. They’ve noted concerns and will be feeding them into the priority list of works they have for our area. I’m told this list will be going out for consultation soon. Additionally, I’m attempting to set up similar meetings in the more problematic areas of the road in the coming weeks and months. I want to ensure that the 8
priority list of works is well informed and considers all people, not just cars! Carrying on that theme, a new (primarily) off-road route has been established connecting Carisbrooke & Gunville with the West Wight. It’s a pragmatic route but - in my opinion - a good one nonetheless and I’m excited to see it happen. Myself and Cllr Terry Martin just have some initial concerns regarding the ‘starting’ point in Gunville but I’m sure we can get those ironed out. You may have heard that the Isle of Wight Council will be considering a motion from Cllr Martin Oliver to support a bid for Newport to be granted city status. This was also brought to Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council’s full council meeting who unanimously voted to support the bid. And finally, the new NCCC website is now live. I’m sure you’ll agree that it provides a much better experience than its predecessor! As always, if you need to get in touch, please use the contact details at the top of this page.

News report from Cllr Matthew Price for Newport, Fairlee & Whippingham • 07833 537668 • 01983 524320 matthewpricewhippingham@gmail.com As the new council settles in there are many challenges ahead. A huge issue for local communities is always the constant over development encroaching onto our green spaces. The Island is in grave danger of inappropriate development and in particular our green spaces and Greenfield sites are generally at risk. The IOW Council has the ability to make many of its own planning rules through The Island Plan which is a planning policy which takes into account many of our unique issues being an Island and is the basis of this protection. However, the island plan is now terribly out of date and is no longer able to protect our Island in the same way as it previously could from certain types of development. In particular within the ward, I have represented you for, the allocation of 880 houses at Fairlee Farm continues to be a dreadful worry, although I feel confident this land allocation will be removed from the new Island Plan when the document is adopted by the council. Newport Councillors will be working together to ensure Newport and Carisbrooke is protected as best as possible through the new Island Plan. The IOW Council, through consultation, hopes to have the current housing target reduced significantly as part of delivering the new Island Plan.
There have been issues with dog fouling and litter in and around Seaclose Park, which was not helped because of the need to remove one of the dog bins in the park due to issues with emptying rubbish bins and dog bins which cannot be driven to. But we have the funding for additional dog bins and extra rubbish bins and hope these can be installed during the summer at other locations at Seaclose. The IOW Festival is still due to go ahead in September and I continue to watch the situation carefully. The festival organisers have been involved in a number of experimental events and as the IOW Festival is virtually the last event on their list of events to be held, any teething troubles or problems should be brought down to the very minimum. They are also increasing precautions to ensure as little disruption as possible is caused if the weather turns bad during that weekend. NCCC are due to have a briefing by the IOW Festival shortly.
Some of you will know I have been a huge advocate for trying to relocate Newport Football club to Seaclose Park. The current planning permission is to build the new facility at the racecourse, and this is due to start in September. Keeping Newport FC in Newport is vital for the survival of Newport and also to bring much needed I have secured extra funding through sports and leisure facilities back to Newport. Newport & Carisbrooke Community The new administration at County Hall are Council and thank my colleagues at NCCC still looking into the viability of this facility for agreeing to help with this funding for going to Seaclose over the next few weeks, I additional Grass cutting and maintenance hope this last effort to persuade the Council around the ward and will happily look at will be successful. other ways of improving the area you live in.
