Rotary Shoebox Appeal Thanks to a tremendous effort by schools, clubs and members of the Island Community the Island Rotary Clubs collected 2,438 shoeboxes together with an assortment of warm clothing which has all been loaded onto a lorry kindly provided by Steve Porter Transport and delivered to the mainland. From there the shoeboxes will be transported to Moldova to reach Rotary Clubs there for distribution to children in Moldavan communities in time for Christmas. Thank you everyone and we look forward to working with you next year! Rotarian Paul Wheeler 2
Dear Readers Welcome to the December issue and here we are hurtling along heading towards Christmas and the New Year... and what a year its been. Christmas is fast approaching and once again the Salvation Army in Newport will be holding their Christmas Day Dinner. There will be a free hot meal and pudding available to all their friends in the Community who may be homeless, elderly, anyone on their own and for any families who wish to join them. This event is a mammoth task and organiser, Kay Willett is asking help from us all whether it be in the form of donating food or volunteering. Kay understands that without the help of the Community this event would not be as successful as it has been on previous years. Here is a list of items needed in order for them to help the homeless and those who would usually spend Christmas on their own. If you can help in any way please email Kay on kay. willett@salvationarmy.org.uk or find her on Facebook. Currently the drop off points for donations are the Salvation Army Church in Newport on a Monday Tuesday and Wednesday between 10 and 2. Also the Salvation Army charity shop in Ryde. If you are aware of anyone who would like to join them on Christmas Day or are in need and can’t be there, please let Kay know. Food - carrots, sprouts, stuffing, pigs in blankets, parsnips, roast potatoes, gravy, turkey, peas, Christmas pudding, cream, custard, mince pies, milk, tea, coffee and Christmas cake. Drinks (non alcoholic) - Pop, flavoured water, fruit juice. Gifts - Men’s, ladies and children’s. Entertainment - Can you spare a couple of hours on Christmas Day to bring some entertainment to the guests. Volunteers - Volunteers are needed to assist in the preparation of the vegetables on Christmas Eve. This usually takes a couple of hours with a good team of people. Volunteers are needed on Christmas Day to help get the room ready for the guests’ arrival. People are also needed to serve the guests during the meal and to chat and share fellowship. You may be the only person that has spoken to the elderly folk that come in for a while. Finally, it all needs to be cleared away. Drivers - Many of the guests will needed to be collected from their homes. If you can help collect and return the guests at the end of the day please get in touch. The Salvation Army also delivers food parcels to families over the Christmas period. Could you assist? 4

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 I would like to start this month’s report with a bit of good news on the school crossing front! Mindful of the amount of work due to take place in Wellington Road, as the school upgrades start there, I approached the agent for Sir Robert MacAlpine (the contractors doing the works) with a view to getting sponsorship from them for at least one crossing patrol officer. I am pleased to say that he has come back to me with a ‘yes’ from them! They have agreed to sponsor the Wellington Road crossing patrol for a year (I will work on extending that for the duration of the build) so in the first instance we know that we have that covered for the next financial year. Good news indeed. I have had further meetings with regards to the engineered crossing close to Cedar Hill and feel that every effort is being made to achieve what we really need, however there are so many Highways safety rules and regulations to take into account, in this location particularly, that it does slow the planning process up a bit. But please be assured this is an active project. I’m sure it will be met with mixed reactions, but I can now tell you that double yellow lines are planned for Castle Hill (and part of Spring Lane). Unfortunately so many people had taken to parking there that it has made it very difficult and dangerous for coaches and other vehicles to access the castle, especially concerning as there are many pedestrians on this route in the summer months. It is also a popular pedestrian route to the High Street and doctors surgery. The other concern is limited/no access for emergency vehicles which must be able to reach properties in the case of fire or accident. I have recently attended a conference and briefing held by Southern Water at the Lakeside Inn in Wootton. The purpose of this was to clarify their plans until 2020 and to highlight their priorities for that period. The
part relating to drinking water and drought was particularly interesting as we import 30% of our drinking water but approximately a third comes from Carisbrooke. This highlights the importance of our local waterways and groundwater management and the need to prevent contamination. This in turn means that we are closely monitored in this area and that we need to be aware of what is being released into the streams, and fields, in terms of agri-chemicals and sewage leakage from septic tanks and broken pipes. Southern water assured us that they are very pro-active on this and encourage the reporting of any suspicious leakage that you may observe. They are also very keen to work with planning officers to ensure that the water and waste water infrastructure for new developments is in place and secure before building commences. They consider population growth and neighbor-hood plans to assess where development is most likely in order to ensure that the infrastructure is adequate, or where it will be impacted upon by potential development. It is their aim to work with the community to ensure the best service can be provided within their remit as a non-statutory body. I was proud and honored to lay a wreath at Little Gatcombe (Simeon Green) on the first remembrance day since the inauguration of this new memorial. Whilst there were only a few of us in attendance this year I hope that in future years more will come to pay their respects. I know that I often see people sitting on the new bench there, it does provide a tranquil setting for reflection, despite being on the side of a busy road, and so fitting that there should be an area of commemoration for those in our village who so bravely gave their lives serving in the armed forces. May I take this opportunity to wish you a peaceful Christmas and an optimistic and healthy New Year.

Monthly Report for Newport by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, IoW, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: Julie.Jones-Evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans I always find it interesting that as the year draws to an end there is a huge flurry of activity to tie up loose ends before we face a new year with fresh aspirations. This is certainly true of what’s happening in Newport at the moment. The youth shelters have now been installed in Church Litten and the extra fencing further along the library is already making a difference with keeping people safe in the park and library area. The outdoor gym equipment has now been ordered and will be installed before the year is out. I’m so pleased this project has come to fruition it has been fraught with difficulties over the years but with support from the Parish Council, Police, Lottery Funding and IW Council we made it! Having the chance to create a new area of the park has transformed this area, opening it up and providing a much needed facility. There is some great news with my 20 mph campaign, following on from the conference in October I put a motion to the IW Council which was passed with a huge majority to introduce 20mph in residential areas, town and villages centres and where people work and learn. This is the start of making safer streets for everyone a reality and I thank everyone for their support. The most important part of making 20mph work is widespread engagement across the whole 14
community and helping people understand the benefits of 20mph. We had a 15 minute film made of the conference, capturing the key moments of the day and we will be having a showing of this soon for anyone to come along to. Since the opening up of the link road between Mill Street and Foxes Road (which I opposed) residents in the area are now faced with an increase in traffic and cars travelling at a speed which is not suitable for the area. I’ve been working with the IW Council on a scheme to provide a crossing point. The ideal location would be near the junction of Old Westminster Lane and Mill Street as this is the natural crossing point for people going into town and school. However certain criteria has to be met for a zebra crossing to be installed and the first set of data collected did not reach the levels needed. Another set of data is being collected at the moment as during the past few months traffic has increased. If the zebra crossing is still not feasible I have secured funding and had plans drawn up for a crossing at the top of the road, which will slow traffic down and provide a “pedestrian refuge” to allow much safer crossing. I wish you all a most Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year. Best wishes Julie
