Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 The WW1 commemoration at the Simeon Green was well attended. Words of remembrance were spoken by Deputy Lieutenant Charles Mobbs, Mark Earp, Rev. Marcus Bagg and Cllr Brodie. In attendance were the High Sheriff Gioia Minghella - Giddens and the chair of the Isle of Wight Council Lora Peacey-Wilcox as well as representatives from the Police, British Legion and Fire Service. A fitting tribute to those brave men and women of our parish who gave their lives during the Great War. Our commemorative bench took pride of place and next to it a tribute board, please do enjoy these next time you cross the green. The weather was kind to us.

for the Island... building a digital bridge to enhance business and evolve services and economic opportunities by strong connections with the rest of the world. Whilst exporting large items has always presented a problem for the Island, skills such as software development, call centres, cyber security, digital design and many other technological projects can be evolved here and exported without even leaving your desk. Great opportunities are out there which will boost our economy and hopefully propel us to the forefront of the growing digital technology market. Interesting how historically people such as Marconi and Alexander Graham Bell chose the island so very many years ago to demonstrate their ‘new technology’ (Radio and telephone).

I’m pleased to say that Froglands Ford is again open. The entry and exit points are now more sloped allowing safer entrance and egress. Please remember that at this time of year, particularly, the fords are all much deeper so you may still encounter problems at certain times. I would put out a plea to all users that the fords and lanes are used respectfully and driven slowly and with care, and particularly remind 4x4 drivers that these lanes are not a playground as the damage some are doing is unnecessary and causes great angst to the residents and other road users in this area.

I was invited to attend the opening of the newly resurfaced Military Road. It was a fun event starting with a vintage bus journey from Isle of Wight Pearl to the Wight Mouse Inn in Chale, led by a fleet of vintage cars. It is worth remembering that although this road now looks like a race track it is still as rural as most island roads are (see photo of some of the first public users).

I attended the Digital Conference this month and heard about some innovative ideas that will help to create better communications 4

I would like to finish by wishing you all a peaceful and Happy Christmas, I cant believe where this year has gone!

Christmas Recycling Tour By Cllr Michael Murwill - Cabinet Member for Waste Management

THIS ADVERT COULD BE YOURS FOR JUST £13

The IWC, in partnership with Amey, are undertaking a ‘Festive Reduce Reuse Recycle Tour’ around the Island during November and December to inform residents of what can be recycled over the Christmas period. Below are the venues during December: pop along and pick up a free recipe card and recycling booklet. They would also like your views on waste and recycling services and an online survey is now open until January 4. News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07970009908 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans As part of the improvements for Newport that Shaping Newport is bringing about, Newport Business Association has negotiated Christmas parking offers with the Isle of Wight Council. Free after 3pm in short stay Newport car parks on each Thursday before Christmas will be a great way to enjoy some festive entertainment and shopping until 8pm in the County Town. Bloom and Grow is a new project that has been started by St Cross Court residents. They want to improve the flower beds in their home and also in town, for instance the plant displays outside County Hall. Most of the hard work will be done by the Restorative Justice team (a way for people to compensate for their crimes) and the designs, choice of plants and maintenance schedule will be done by the more senior members of the team. Newport Business Association has applied for funding to buy the plants and equipment needed and make sure it all gets watered in the summer. Newport Victoria Pavilion (Victoria Recreation Ground) is having a make-over this winter, a new look and better facilities. The Parish Council has a new assets and facilities manager who is bringing these plans to fruition and making it a better venue for events, clubs, societies and community use. Since the running of the club was handed over to the Parish Council in April we are working towards making it a viable business

and a valuable community asset for Newport and Carisbrooke. Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council is moving from the Riverside Centre in January. The council is expanding and needs more room which sadly cannot be accommodated at the Riverside Centre. Our public desk will be at Lord Louis Library from the second week in January, 10-12 Tuesdays and Wednesday and Thursday 1.30 – 3.30. The office will be located at the Guildhall for the administration of the Council. It is sad to leave the Riverside after 10 years but we are pleased they have new tenants waiting to move in. There is good news from Southern Vectis regarding the No 9 bus stand at the bus station. Since the move to the new location by the library, it’s been obvious that the space just doesn’t work, very crowded and a bit dangerous. Plans to expand the space and make it fit for purpose have been drawn up and are waiting for final approval. Also in the same area, a recent meeting between the Police, myself, Newport Youth Cafe and the IW Council regarding the continuing Anti Social Behaviour in the park was very productive. It’s necessary to pool our resources and ideas to achieve the best results. The plan is to combine changing the environment by creating more space and new continued over the page

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans continued shelters (these have proved very popular) and also have youth workers going out on different evenings. Newport Youth Cafe is applying for funding from the Police Crime Commissioner to help with their work next year and I will be applying for some funding through the Parish Council.

It’s that time of year again, The Salvation Army in Newport will be holding their Christmas Day dinner. As always they will be providing a free hot meal and a pudding, to all their friends in the Community who may be homeless, elderly, or anyone who will be on their own and families who wish to join them. Organiser Kay is asking for your help - Please see below a list of the kind of things they need. Last year they served 144 dinners on Christmas Day. Alongside this they also provided 140 families with hampers. Volunteers - They will need volunteers to assist in the preparation of the vegetables on Christmas Eve. This usually takes a couple of hours with a good team of people. They will need people on Christmas Day to help get the room ready for the guests arrival (time to be confirmed). People to help serve guests during the meal and to chat and share fellowship. You may be the only person that has spoken to some of the elderly folk that come in a while. Finally help is needed to clear away. They will also need guests collected from their homes. Could anyone help collect and return guests at the end of the day? Entertainment - They would love to entertain their guests. Food - Carrots, sprouts, stuffing, pigs in blankets, parsnips, roast potatoes, gravy, turkey, peas, Christmas pudding, cream, custard, mince pies, milk, tea, coffee and Christmas cake. Drinks (non alcoholic) Pop, flavoured water, Fruit juice. Gifts - Men’s, ladies and children’s. Hampers - Tins of veg and meat, pasta, non perishables as well as fresh nearer the time. They are also looking for people to help with preparing the hampers the week leading up to Christmas. If you can help in anyway or would like to join them on the day please contact Kay via email at Kay.willett@salvationarmy.org.uk for more information. There are drop off points in Ryde and Newport Salvation Army Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10-2 , Salvation Army Ryde & Shanklin Charity Shops Mon – Sat 9.30am – 5pm 12
