Welcome to the February issue which arrives with a big sigh of relief that we made it through January; the month that goes on and on and on, which wasn’t helped with all the rain and wind that we’ve experienced recently. On a positive note you will notice that the evenings are slowly getting lighter which means that Spring will be with us shortly.

Help from One Island to Another. Since hearing about the news of the raging fires in Australia and having family out there herself, local resident, Amber Taylor-Wilcox is asking anyone who can knit, sew or crochet to help her make pouches, wraps, nests and blankets to be used by rescue centres in the rehabilitation and rescuing of native animals. She is working closely with the Animal Rescue Craft Guild and below are details of just some of the items needed. Crochet birds nests - A variety of sizes are needed (from 3-12 inches in diameter). Recommended to use acrylic or wool in 8 ply or DK. No yarns that are ‘fluffy’ like mohair. With the walls up, it’s a nest for birds or a flat bottomed pouch for an animal. Pouch sizes needed - 10cm x 15cm; 15cm x 20cm; 25cm x 35cm; 35cm x 40cm and 50cm x 65cm. Closed on the two longer sides and one end, and left open at the top. Knitted Outer Pouches:- Material: 8 ply or DK wool (they are unable to use pouches made from synthetic materials as the joeys cannot breathe in closed synthetic pouches). Fabric Outer Pouches:- Cotton, flannelette, polar fleece, wool, jersey, sweatshirt material, etc. Poly blends and synthetics are OK. French seams are not needed for outer pouches. All Inner Pouches:- 100% natural fibre only (cotton, bamboo, linen, silk). Flannelette or plain cotton are great as well as stretchy t-shirt cotton. Fabric should be very soft (what you would give to a baby). French seams are a must for all joey pouch liners. The lining should not be attached to the pouch as it will need to be changed regularly. Onward shipping has been arranged to the ARCG and her family will also deliver to local hubs for distribution across Australia. You can drop your items at any of the following collection points, IOW Zoo, Sandown; Lanesend Primary School, Cowes; Vic Tavern, East Cowes; Dog Grooming Centre and Monkey Haven, Newport; 4c Oakvale, Oakfield, Ryde; Tapnell Park Farm, West Wight.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Island Roads have resurfaced Chapel/New Street car park and at the same time have closed the entrance on Chapel Street. I’m working on reversing this as it’s causing so many knock on problems. I’ve had complaints about how it’s difficult to negotiate and is sending too much traffic up New Street and back down the High Street. I’ll keep you posted on progress. The New Street art project is moving ahead well and a recent workshop with Independent Arts and Newport residents, was so fascinating, learning about the people who have shaped our town over the centuries. Cockrams Yard is one of our mediaeval passage ways and the art will be displayed along the wall . It’s called Notable Newport and I hope it’s going to be part of a series of public art that celebrates our town. Community Speed watch is being set up in Newport so please get in touch if you want to get involved in keeping our streets safer. Plans for the updated pavilion at Newport Victoria Recreation Ground is going to begin soon with a public consultation event. We want to hear what residents want from the grounds and facilities before plans are drawn up. It’s looking likely that the Community Council will be taking over Vectis Field that adjoins the rec so this space will form part of the area. This extra land means we can incorporate better parking facilities so the new place can hold bigger events. Post Office Lane toilets will be closed for about 14 weeks while the new ones are
being installed. This will cause some inconvenience (excuse the pun!) but we will have public toilets at South Street, on Church Litten car park open still. Please bear with us, the new toilets will be worth it! The new Community Connector has started now and will be helping people that maybe feel isolated begin to participate in community life a bit more. Isolation is an increasing social problem which can lead very easily to poor health and decline. I’ll give more detail next month on how this role will work and how to contact Elaine. It’s the time of year when we set and discuss our objectives for the year and allocate funds to enable this. Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council have set the budget which will include £25,000 contribution to High Street Heritage Action Zone, £7,000 to the Youth Trust to support their new youth centre, £8,000 for Shaping Newport, £5,000 for a Biosphere project, £12,600 for pay towards keeping the no 39 bus running, £5,000 for community events, £5,000 contribution to the new Children’s Story Festival, £1000 for Time Bank, £41,000 for the new Community Connector role, £1000 for Community Speed, as well as all the ongoing financial support for many local groups and services such as our public toilets, parks etc. If you are in a B and D property, the 4% rise works out at £4.68 increase per year, the precept will be £91.61 2020/21. Our team and councillors will ensure projects are delivered and value for money achieved.

News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 Currently I am receiving many communications regarding the concern of residents with regard to the amount of proposed development in the Gunville and Carisbrooke area. At the present time these applications are under consideration and no decisions have been made as to whether they will progress or not. Can I urge any of you with feelings that you wish to express to use the planning portal, or to write or email directly to the planning department at Seaclose stating the application number that you are writing about. Your comments will be posted on the planning website and will be read by others...the planning case officers and myself as it is in my ward. All comments are taken into consideration when a decision is being made. In planning it is important that your views are of a material nature as these are the ones that count.
River at the Quay where it meets the Pan Stream and Medina running from Shide. As a consequence I believe that the whole flooding issue needs to be considered not just in the area around Gunville, but even more so in the areas around Sea Street and Quay Street in Newport. As we are seeing more deluge rainfall due to climate change and rising sea levels predicted to be at least a metre by the end of the century we must continue to take flooding very seriously particularly when considering suitable sites for development.
I am excited at the prospect of the Island hosting the final stage of the Tour of Britain Cycle Race in September 2021. This will boost our tourism for sure, particularly as it is the biggest ‘free to watch’ spectator event in the country and it is globally televised. This will give a great boost to local business and put the Island in the spotlight. It will need I do have concerns that several hundred financial support from local business properties are proposed, one particular and the IOW Council and there will be reason is surface water run off in the area, although I am sure that engineered sponsorship opportunities, but more interestingly, if this can be achieved the solutions will improve the conditions, to a far higher standard, ultimately, than the long term effects of such an event will raise the profile of cycling on the Island situation currently. and hopefully leave a legacy that will have longer term economic benefits as However I am concerned that the it will promote the Island as an all year increased amount of hard surface will make the water flow faster and the water round sport and leisure destination. This in turn should give us greater funds that eventually ends up in the Lukely Brook or the Gunville Stream in this area to improve our cycleways and boost our endeavours to make the Island would flow a much higher rate when more effective gullies and culverts are in Carbon Neutral by 2030 by promoting sustainable transport. place. News Report from Cllr John Hobart Thinking of sustainable transport, I was interested to read that the National Trust is offering reduced entry fees (20%) or free refreshments to visitors that walked or cycled to visit some of their properties on the mainland. This is part of their endeavour to hit their carbon neutral status by 2030 as well. I see this as a great incentive to get people out of their cars and feel perhaps we should be encouraging businesses and tourist attractions on the Island to rise to this challenge as well, especially along the coast when our section of the National Coastal Trail is complete.

Bereavement is the period of grief and mourning after a death. Grief is as unique as you are, and as individual as a fingerprint. Each person will be affected in his or her own way because everyone is different – even in the same family. Butterflies Bereavement Support is a community-based bereavement charity and was set up 3 years ago to meet the growing demand of supporting the emotional and physical needs of those aged 16 plus who have experienced the loss of a loved one or a friend through death. Butterflies is inclusive, everyone is welcome. They are not a religious organisation or connected to any other charity. They are here for bereaved families and individuals who need care and support following the passing of someone special in their lives. Butterflies Bereavement Support is made up of volunteers who have experienced their own loss, and each of them have received varying levels of training and continue to be trained in all aspects of bereavement. It is the invaluable support of a growing team of dedicated people locally who are giving their own time, skills and talents to be there to listen, counsel and support throughout the year. They offer accessible Counselling Sessions, drop in and chats, evening bereavement support groups, bereavement cafe’s, Suicide Prevention and Support, Dementia and Bereavement Support, Pre-Bereavement Support and activities to alleviate loneliness. Bereaved people, even those who have witnessed the peaceful death of a loved one, often need to tell their story repeatedly, and at that important part of transferring the experience they endured into a memory, instead of reliving it like a parallel reality every time they think about it – they are here to encourage open discussion with all people. Butterflies is transforming the lives of many – and many more will be transformed in the future. Butterflies Bereavement Support are looking for volunteers to become Bereavement Buddies. Their bereavement buddies have the chance to become trained listeners and achieve Level 2 counselling skills and then further development and training opportunities. They also are looking for welcomer’s, team leaders and people who can help with admin and fundraising. If you or indeed you know of someone who would benefit from support call them on 07889009393 or 01983 619503. If you are interested in volunteering email Paul at info@butterfliesbereavement.co.uk or for more information about Butterflies Bereavement Support visit their website www.butterfliesbereavement.com 15
