Weight loss is for life, not just for January! This New Year people across the Island will embark on a bid to lose weight. Kim Street, who runs Slimming World groups in Carisbrooke is urging dieters to ditch fad diets and choose a sustainable weight-loss plan: “People start January with the best intentions but by the end of the month so many have been defeated by hunger or feelings of deprivation. Diets based on deprivation are almost impossible to maintain, resulting in you throwing in the towel and feeling like a failure!” Kim explains the key is to choose a realistic healthy eating plan. Slimming World’s Food Optimising encourages members to fill up on healthy ‘Free Foods’, including fruit, vegetables, pasta, potatoes and lean meat freely without the need for weighing, counting and measuring. It also recognises that the minute something’s forbidden you only want it more, so no foods, even highfat snacks and alcohol are banned, simply limited, making it easier to achieve your weight loss dream. Kim believes support is also important: “Losing weight is challenging and there maybe times when weight loss slows down or a ‘bad week’ leads to a temporary gain. It can be tempting to give up and that’s where the fantastic support offered in a group makes the difference. Together we can achieve anything”. To join Kim’s Carisbrooke Slimming World groups, held at St Thomas of Canterbury Primary School every Monday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm or Saturday morning at 8.30am and 10.30am just pop along or call 07855747893 2

Monthly Report for Newport by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, IoW, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: Julie.Jones-Evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Well here we are welcoming in another year and thinking of how we want to improve our lives with our New Year resolutions. In a few days time we will be deciding on the new budget for Newport which looks to be about the same level as last year. The good news is that we have got almost enough money now to refurbish Post Office Lane toilets, just finalising some plans on how to do it as I would really like to see a small business located alongside them, there is plenty of room and it may be a great opportunity for someone. On 21st January we are having a ‘Have Your Say’ event at the Riverside Centre to show the film from the 20mph Conference and listen to your queries about it and other traffic related issues in Newport and Carisbrooke. Everyone is welcome 10.30-12, refreshments provided. Talking of traffic, I have been talking to many residents about the problems regarding parking and the need for Residents Parking Zones. There is a new councillor, Cllr Stephens who is now in charge of parking and I am already talking to him about relaunching the work for the Newport Pilot scheme, which the previous member, Cllr Jordan stopped part way through, which was really frustrating. However, you know that I do not give up on things and I will continue to work to achieve RPZs which are so desperately needed in many of our town centre streets. 4
I am still getting complaints about the advertising boards that are used so much in town. They may well be a good way to advertise a business but they are a hazard to some pedestrians, especially those that have mobility or sight issues. There is a new councillor in charge of this area now so I will be pressing for action to be taken, not to eliminate the boards but to have a sensible policy that allows for the safe passage of pedestrians and those on mobility scooters. I am seeing more and more that we need to think about how we want our town to be. I think it should be a safer, more welcoming environment especially for our senior residents, a place where cycling and walking is put above the needs of the car. This also helps an area become more vibrant and economically strong, with a new superstore and possible retail park outside of town, the future of Newport has to be planned, not left to flounder. During January (not 21st as we have open morning at Riverside) I am holding surgeries at the Quay Arts Centre cafe, I’ll be there on a Saturday morning between 9.30 and 10.30 if anyone would like to see me about any issues you think I can help with. If you can’t pop down then email me julie.jones-evans@ iow.gov.uk or ring 521068 Finally I hope everyone has a great 2017 and that you can help me make Newport an even better place to live, work and play!

Toilet Block Refurbishment
During the summer, the Restorative Justice Team carried out exterior decorating to bring a new lease of life to the Carisbrooke toilets and they have recently completed a similar job on the Seaclose toilets. The Parish Council is committed to improving the cleanliness and functionality of the toilets and both blocks now have a cleaner and crisper visual appearance.

Last year the Parish Council donated a new Newport Shield for the Primary School Choir Year 6 and under and this will be once again be presented by the Chairman. At the December meeting Councillors unanimously agreed to contribute £2000 to the Newport Foodbank. In addition, funds will be set aside in the 2017/18 budget to help this worthwhile organisation.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 By the time that you read this Christmas will have come and gone, the New Year will be firmly in place and its time to start again in earnest trying to bring the many ideas and plans for the Carisbrooke and Gunville wards to fruition. As I write this just before Christmas, the progress on most things seems to be slowing up, but since I last wrote a new question has arisen in relation to Taylor Road. The conundrum is whether this road should be opened to allow schools transport to enter and leave that way; whether it might be a one way only with school busses entering by Wellington Road and leaving by Taylor Road; opened to general traffic; or none of the above and kept firmly shut! This becomes relevant due to the possible development of 50 houses on the land adjacent to Taylor Road, which will have an impact on Gunville Road as well.
aren’t familiar with this as it has only been recognized since 2012 and it is an airborne fungus that is killing ash trees across the country. As our area is both rural and part of the AONB it seems pertinent that we are aware of what the signs of this can be. The sad thing would be if we see the demise of large swathes of ash trees in the same way that we did when Dutch Elm disease devastated the British Elm tree population in the 1970s. I have added
It is hard to decide what the best solution might be as in many respects opening Taylor would ease the congestion on Wellington Road, but the residents in Newport West are concerned that it may become a rat-run for people travelling to Sainsburys from Gunville. With the probable development of the Heart Foundation shop and the Argos Store to become one superstore it seems to me that traffic management is very important and I will be speaking to Highways to see what they feel about this…it is clear that the area will be subjected to considerably more traffic whether Taylor Road opens or not. If you have any comments that you feel are relevant please do email me so that I can remain best informed about local feeling (john.hobart@iow.gov.uk). photographs to guide you as to what it might look like and please don’t be frightened of Whilst I was attending the last AONB Steering informing the council’s tree officer, or myself, if Committee meeting recently a point that you think that you have spotted it…better to be was brought to our attention is the growing safe than sorry! Resolutions…. It’s that time of the year again, when we say goodbye to one year and welcome in another. It’s traditional to make yearly resolutions, which normally get broken before the last of the Turkey is used up and bubble and squeak is on the menu for the fourth day running. We can thank the Babylonians for this tradition as it is believed they were the first to make New Year’s resolutions and the early Christians believed the first day of the new year should be spent reflecting on past mistakes and resolving to improve oneself in the new year. My resolutions are pretty much the same year after year and the reason being is because I break them year after year. They are standard resolutions and include at least at least four maybe five from the list of top ten resolutions, which are lose weight, eat more healthily, exercise more, be more patient, stick to a budget, stop smoking, save money, get more organised, find a better job and to just be a better person over all. It’s good to know I am not alone in my thinking and planning and failing!!!!! Traditions go back a long way and each country has its different beliefs – take Italy for example… apparently Italians wear red underwear on New Year’s Day to bring good luck all year long. I do hope they wear clothes on top otherwise that will certainly be a sight for sore eyes. Back in ancient times it was believed that noisemaking and fireworks on New Year’s eve were thought to dispel evil spirits and bring 10
good luck for the forthcoming year. I’m not convinced with this but one tradition that really makes my mind boggle is that in some countries it’s good luck to eat foods like black eyed peas, ham and cabbage because it is thought they bring prosperity. If you want to have a Happy New Year, don’t eat lobster or chicken. Lobsters can move backward and chickens can scratch in reverse, so it is thought these foods could bring a reversal of fortune. Just to be safe I think I might just have a sandwich for lunch on New Year’s Day now. If you want a good New Year tip then I suggest you make sure your car is securely locked as statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau revealed that more vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than any other holiday. Does anybody know why this would be because I certainly can’t understand it? Another tradition in Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico is that some families stuff a large doll, which is called Mr. Old Year, with memories from the past year. They also dress him in clothes from the outgoing year. At midnight, he is set ablaze, thus burning away the bad memories. I would imagine this could be quite satisfying and a cleansing routine, to forget the past and move on to a bright future. Now where did I put that doll which I can dress in that ghastly knitted jumper I got for Christmas… Whatever your traditions are I hope you have fun doing them and good luck with your resolutions I hope you at least last until the end of January and I wish you all a Happy and Peaceful New Year. Here is another quick and easy recipe and can be made with Christmas pudding or mince pies or why not push the boat out and use both. There is no cooking with this just a bit of mixing. Take a tub of vanilla Ice cream out the freezer and allow to soften (not completely thawed, but soft enough to stir through). Break up the mince pies or Christmas pudding into bite-size pieces, then stir through the ice cream. Put back in the freezer and everytime you pop to the kitchen delve in and have a kingsize scoop.
