News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Shaping Newport has it’s “Have your Say” questionnaire open until the end of January many shops and businesses have it available for you to fill out and it is available on line too here www. surveymonkey.co.uk/r/shapingnewport There is also a Facebook “ Shaping Newport” page where the latest events are posted and updates on the project also. Not surprisingly many people have commented on the parking situation and also the lack of green space. Lots of positive comments too are being given about our historic buildings and some people would like to see more housing available with the upper floors of shops being utilised better. More people living in town would give it vibrancy. Transport is another topic that has been popular with lots of people asking for 20mph in town to make it more pedestrian friendly. On January 20th I have organised the Newport Transport Forum, 10am at the Riverside Centre. Everyone is welcome and we will be discussing several 4
topics that will directly affect Newport residents. We will share the results of the 20mph survey that was completed in the autumn and receive a presentation from Martin Gibson who has carried out a pedestrian audit to enable us to create a more pedestrian friendly environment. The IW Council will also be presenting the plans for major junctions in the town. Not surprisingly I have received a lot of comments regarding the public toilets in South Street being closed. It’s worth remembering that the IW Council shut them and that they are their responsibility. However, as they are such a valuable asset for us all, I have come up with a proposal for the Parish and Isle of Wight Council to enable a positive outcome for the situation. I can’t make any promises at this time as there is a lot to resolve, but want to assure you all that I am working to get them reopened in the future. continued over the page
News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Good news for our young people in Newport as the Parish Council is now committed to supporting the youth services and we made a donation to the Newport Youth Cafe for £2,000 to enable it to carry on its work for this year. Not only do they provide a youth club but they also go out into Newport and talk to young people, which is much needed. This year we also want to provide some “Pop Up” youth clubs, working with the youth services in Newport to go to places in the parish which don’t have anything much going on for young people. We can use Newport Victoria Recreation Ground pavilion and also do something in Parkhurst too.

Our local police have come to ask us for the priorities in Newport and once again the anti-social behaviour in Church Plumbing & Electrical Litten and the bus Bathrooms Showers Kitchens station was agreed. Toilets Taps Sinks The situation has Joinery Tiling Painting improved over the New Installations & Repairs years especially since Woodburning Stoves we put the youth Quality Property Repairs shelters and new Steve Hadley 25 Years Experience railings in, but does Trusted - Local - Reliable need monitoring still as the design of the Tel 01983 754293 or 07768720034 library makes it a place where people can congregate.

Songs From My Heart by Sara Kouvaritakis
Sara Kouvaritakis was born on the Isle of Wight, and during her childhood she and her siblings enjoyed a lot of freedom. They spent many happy days playing on the beach, swimming in the sea or fishing from a little boat. In this way the sea became a part of her identity, and the movements of the waves and shifting sand have had a profound effect on her work as a musician, painter and poet. Sara studied the clarinet at the Birmingham School of Music, and she has had a lifetime affair with painting. She now lives back on the Isle of Wight.
Vackies in Trouble By John Lea
In the seaside town of Ilfracombe, many of the homes have taken in evacuee children, known locally as Vackies. They have come from the cities to escape the Blitz, but Ilfracombe too is not without its dangers. On the hill above the harbour stands the old chapel, boarded up and in ruins. It used to serve as a lighthouse, but now it is wartime and the lantern no longer burns. The path to the chapel is treacherous and overgrown. lt is definitely out of bounds, but John Lea and Murray Pierce, two of the Vackies, decide to explore...

Take a trip down Memory Lane with Age UK Isle of Wight For many of us, the New Year is a time to look back, reflect on the year that has just passed, reminisce on the highs and the lows of the past 12 months, and to look to the future. However, for some, this can present more of a challenge, in particular, those with memory loss or dementia. Dementia is a progressive disorder affecting how the brain works, particularly the ability to remember, think and reason. Symptoms can include • Memory loss • Struggling to follow • ‘Fuzzy’ thoughts conversations • Disorientation • Mood / personality changes Being forgetful doesn’t necessarily point to dementia. As we get older, many of us experience the above symptoms, the causes of which can include stress, thyroid problems or vitamin deficiencies. If problems like these start to affect your daily life, or someone that you care about, make an appointment to discuss them with a GP. Age UK Isle of Wight have been supporting local, older people on the island since 1973; they run weekly Community Memory Groups around the island, with the aim of bringing together and supporting those with memory loss or dementia. Groups run at: • Brading (Wednesdays) • Freshwater (Thursdays)
• Lake (Tuesdays) • Newport (Mondays)
• Cowes (Mondays) • Ryde (Thursdays)
Groups are welcoming and friendly, and offer cognitive stimulation through a range of reminiscence and social activities, discussions and games, and, importantly, they also provide respite for a carer or loved one. What Community Memory Group members say about their groups – “Very stimulating, the groups really make us think” “A nice, friendly group, plus we get tea and biscuits!” “We all get on well and learn new things, the activities really help you try to remember, and some things really do stick” Age UK Isle of Wight’s Community Memory Groups run between 10am- 3pm, with half day options available. Costs are: full day £25.50 / half day £14.00. Lunch can be provided for £5, or members are welcome to take their own packed lunch. To learn more about Age UK Isle of Wight’s Community Memory Groups, contact Age UK Isle of Wight via the following methods: Tel: 01983 525282 | E: activity.groups@ageukiw.org.uk | W: www.ageuk.org.uk/isleofwight
Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 As I write this the winter weather has really arrived, it’s cold and very wet! With wet weather in mind I have attended another trial construction of the emergency flood barrier at Monkton Mead in Ryde. We hope to have a permanent barrier…starting spring next year… due to receiving a sizeable grant from the Environment Agency.
into the ditches as they all eventually run into the river. We need to be mindful about our environment and the different species of amphibious and aquatic life that depend on clean water to survive. It is a shame if our carelessness contaminates the river. It was a great pleasure, to recently visit St Thomas of Canterbury Primary School (especially as it was my primary when located at the, now Carisbrooke Doctors Surgery). I was there by invitation from Paul Brading, the Cabinet Member for Education and Cllr Vanessa Churchman, chair of the Children’s Committee. We enjoyed our visit and the great welcome given to us by Maggie Sanderson, the headmistress, and were immensely impressed by the great artwork, done by the pupils, that decorated the walls. I was also impressed by their new extension at the back of school which replaced the old mobile classrooms. This was funded by the diocese and I feel a very worthy investment. The school is looking good, the children seem to be happy and focussed and, at the time of our visit, full of Christmas cheer.
Closer to home we have to be aware of the possible flood issues in our own area. I have recently asked for the Environment Agency and our Highways department to investigate the state of drainage in Gunville, via gullies feeding into the Gunville Stream, after reports from a local resident about the kind of things that wash up in his garden where the open stretch of the stream passes through! These include dog poo bags amongst other fairly unpleasant forms of rubbish. Whilst the EA are investigating in case there is an inadequate domestic drain connection, it is most likely that much of the detritus is caused by people tossing things into the open ditches and road gullies that run down to the Gunville Stream. The EA are endeavouring to raise the standard of the water in the Gunville Stream, which is actually considered to have main river status, My efforts to achieve a zebra crossing with a view to encouraging newts and in Carisbrooke (bottom of Cedar Hill) other river life. I would ask everyone to roll on and are now in the consultation think twice before throwing things 14

Because of bus stops etc the whole thing is a bit more complicated than it looks, but is still moving forwards. The parking review has now closed and hopefully we will be able to announce new resident parking zones, where required by residents, in the not to distant future. Many thanks to Rights of Way for resurfacing the short stretch of footpath between Priory Farm Pond to St Mary’s churchyard, I’m sure a lot of people are happy to have less muddy feet….just the stretch from the pond to Wellington Road to go!!!
