Keep Warm and Keep Well This Winter The next couple of months the weather is likely to turn cold and this is the time to look after yourself, your family, elderly neighbours and friends. The cold weather can make some health problems worse and even lead to serious complications especially in those 65 or older, or anyone who has a long-term health condition. One of the biggest problems for many, especially those living on their own, is not staying warm enough in their homes. When temperatures fall below 8C, older adults can have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, flu, pneumonia, and in serious cases of low temperatures – hypothermia. Older adults can quickly lose body heat and aren’t always aware of their temperature, making it easy for them to become too cold, too quickly. Body temperature below 35C (normal temperature is 37C) can cause hypothermia. Hypothermia is particularly dangerous for those living alone as there’s not someone around to notice the signs.

Later signs of hypothermia: Early signs of hypothermia: • Slow or jerky movements including • Cold hands and feet • Puffy or swollen face trouble walking and clumsiness • Pale skin • Slow heartbeat • Slow or slurred speech • Slow, shallow breathing • Lethargic • Loss of consciousness • Anger or confusion If you notice signs of hypothermia, call 999 and seek immediate medical attention. Check on older neighbours and relatives, and those with heart or breathing (respiratory) problems, to make sure they: • are safe and well • are warm enough, especially at night • have stocks of food and medicines so they do not need to go out during very cold weather Here are a few tips to keep you and your family warm and well this winter:• keep your bedroom at 18C all night if you can – and keep the bedroom window closed • use a hot water bottle or electric blanket to keep warm in bed – but do not use both at the same time • have at least 1 hot meal a day – eating regularly helps keep you warm • have hot drinks regularly • draw curtains at dusk and keep doors closed to block out draughts • get your heating system checked regularly by a qualified professional • wrap up warm and wear thick socks indoors.

I hope you all have a great January and remember to keep warm and well as I’m sure there is cold weather on the way. I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Time To Try Something New For The New Year. Vectis Radio started in a small broom cupboard in January 2010 and in the last 10 years they have moved several times, each one being better than the last and have now found their home at The Riverside Centre. Through sweat and tears the team of volunteers never gave up and now Vectis Radio is the Islands favourite community radio station. Continually growing from strength to strength, Fancy something a little starting out as an internet station only different? and then in November 2017 Vectis Why not try your local Radio went live on FM104.6

The Perfect Shot… We are very lucky to have such a wonderful array of wildlife on the Island and even better some first-class photographers who are willing to sit in the cold, damp, wet, or burning hot sun for hours at a time to catch the perfect shot. I’m sure you will all agree with me that this month’s front cover is exceptional and this is all thanks to the wonderful and talented Darren Harris who is a wildlife enthusiast with a passion for birds of prey, who sits quietly observing and learning the habits of the vast range of wildlife we have on the Island. Darren has created an amazing portfolio of pictures which are now available to buy at Forest View Nursery in Newport. His photos show every tiny feature and detail of the subject and they come to life in front of your eyes which makes it very tempting to reach out and touch them. They make wonderful gifts for family, friends or just for yourself and every household should have a masterpiece like these adorning their walls.

News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 I’m sure many of you can relate to me when I say that I cant believe how quickly we seem to move from one year to the next! 2020 is now upon us and it will hopefully be the start of a good and exciting new decade, certainly one that will bring many changes. I have been busy attending meetings with regards to parking in our area, particularly in the light of the changes at St Mary’s Roundabout. I continue discussion about finding a new place to site a car park with the hopes that this will ease resident parking in the area as I know for many of you this still presents a major problem. At the time of writing, and based on the comments made by residents, the double yellow lines are about to be removed on Carisbrooke Road, although when the next phase of the roundabout is started these will most probably be reinstated. The one thing that has been commented on whilst the lines have been in place is the improved traffic flow along the road. The congestion has reduced greatly and busses are able to get through without blocking the transit of other vehicles. This has added weight to the quest for alternative parking as Highways have had to acknowledge both the parking issues and the improved flow on the road. I have had several meetings with Highways officers and The Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council to investigate options in greater depth. Hopefully we will see this moving forward during the course of 2020. I am working with colleagues in the environmental team of the IWC to

establish a policy of tree planting on Council land where appropriate. Council land could be urban, parks, allotments etc. And our aim would be to select healthy indigenous species, grown in this country- not imported, so that we can ensure as far as possible minimum spread of disease that often comes in on imported trees. Indigenous trees also will support our native wildlife in a far better way than species from other parts of the world. We also hope to encourage better management of existing woodland to ensure its future. It is our aim to support and enable others to understand the benefits and the value of the carbon sequestration of trees. Our aim is not to fill swathes of pasture land with trees, remembering that grassland in itself is very efficient at carbon sequestration, so we would hope to increase trees along boundaries and corridors (ie joining bits of existing forestry by a pathway of trees) Hedgerows are also great contributors to both carbon sequestration and for supporting wildlife. We hope to be planning a rural conference during 2020 which will enable us to reach a wider relevant audience. We also plan to meet with other forums and organisations to garner their support of this project. (CLA, AONB, The Woodland Forum, NFU and of course the Forestry Commission etc) continued over the page

News Report from Cllr John Hobart You might be interested to know that ‘Visit Isle of Wight’ have moved their visitor information centre from the Guildhall to the bus station in Newport. The Museum of Isle of Wight History, was previously operated by VIOW and will in the future be open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and run by Heritage staff. They are planning a series of lectures and exhibitions throughout the year. They also hope to encourage greater numbers of school visits. I do recommend a visit if you haven’t been and it is always worth looking out for their archaeological identifications days…. especially if you are a bit of a beachcomber!

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Happy New Year to you all and a start of a new decade the 20s! January sees the commencement of the demolition and installation of the new toilets in Post Office Lane. This has been long awaited and there will still be more work to complete regarding landscaping, seating, CCTV and lighting after the building is installed. We will have brand new self-contained cubicles that will be a pleasure to use! A small charge will be made to use them which will help cover the costs of running the toilets which runs into the tens of thousands of pounds each year and also so it’s a discouragement to vandals. The new toilets will also have a green roof, which will be made of different varieties of sedum plants. Newport is at the heart of the Biosphere, so it’s important to incorporate nature where we can. AJ Wells, the international stove enamellers based in Newport, will be creating the panels that will clad the building, adding some more public art to our town. We’ve had some great feedback that footfall has increased in the area by our new town map, as people are taking time to look at it. Some locals are even able to spot their properties on it. We still have some canvases of the map for sale in 30 High Street, or contact the Community Council office 559119. Our High Street Heritage Action Zone programme delivery plan has been submitted to Historic England for finalising the investment of around £1.2m in the town centre. There are several strands to the programme; People First Zone - creating a better pedestrian environment

Minster Market Quarter - public realm investment Repurpose empty upper floors creating new space for residents and businesses Shop Front Improvement Grants working from a carefully produced code for design that enhances the conservation area Feasibility study on key buildings investigating how the Guildhall, 113 High Street and the former Lamb Tavern can be brought into better use and renovated Cultural Programme - a series of public events such as exhibitions, theatre, workshops, music, carnivals etc to explore and share our local history This is a really exciting time for Newport and a chance to work with other organisations in a joined up way to deliver change on the ground. The programme begins in April and public engagement will commence in the summer. This June, Newport is proud to have been chosen to be the host town for Armed Forces Day 2020 and to support the event, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council has donated £1000 to assist with the event. We are also working with the IW Council to ensure the Harbour toilets are available for the summer as they need some work doing to bring them back into service. This will be a big help to the other events such as Riverfest and Classic Car Weekend. This month sees the budget setting process for 2020/21. As ever this will be carefully scrutinized and will be a combination of providing services and projects for the benefit of our community.
