How Could I Resist that Face? Island Magazines is continuing with true tradition and bringing you some great front cover stars and to kick off the start of the New Year I just couldn’t resist this super cute photo which was taken by local Wroxall resident Lianne Vine. Lianne is a full-time mum and when she is not running around after her 4 children, 3 Labradors, a pug, a French bulldog, the cat and finally her 4 guinea pigs she can indulge in her passion of photography. She has lived in Wroxall for 6 years and loves nothing more than being in the countryside, she has previously had her own horses and for the past 2 years she has been training her puppy to become her first ever working dog.

Welcome to the January issue of Island Magazines. I hope you all had a great Christmas and although you shouldn’t wish your life away, I know I am not alone in saying goodbye 2020 and hello 2021. I know the current Covid problems aren’t going to disappear just because it’s a new year, but I hope that 2021 is kinder to us and we can hopefully see some light at the end of the tunnel, with the possibility that life may just return back to normal...

This month’s issue is packed with news and information and we have some great advertisers offering a variety of services, and they will all be pleased to hear from you. Do you like this month’s front cover? When I first saw this photo, I just knew that this was going to be our front cover star. I mean how often can you get up this close to highland cattle. Find out more on page 2. The puzzle section on pages 8 and 9 will keep you busy and keep your brain active. I find January is usually one of the worst months of the years and seems to last for about 60+ days. I hope it stays dry so we can at least get out and about for some fresh air. Have you made any new resolutions this year? I haven’t bothered as I know I won’t stick to them. I think the first couple of months of each year are hard enough as it is. I want to wish you all a Happy New Year and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans It feels good to be stepping into 2021 with some positive energy, as we leave 2020 behind us. Post Office Lane toilet project is now completed after 5 years of planning. We have brand new toilets and public space which has certainly brightened up this area which was dingy and a bit unpleasant to say to the least. Light and clean enamel panels from AJ Wells really do lift the space from just a public convenience into a public art, enhancing the public realm as befits the County Town. These will be chargeable toilets which will help pay for the maintenance, serving etc and also has been shown to reduce vandalism. Back to the days of spending a penny – a penny in 1900 is the equivalent of £1.30 today, but don’t panic, we are looking at about 30p and contactless payment is available to stop you fumbling about for change. Some more good news, through the Shaping Newport project the old Laura Ashley shop is being rented for 6 months to use for pop-up shops and other community uses, hopefully the start of an history exhibition of Newport too. The Christmas pop up shops went well here and enabled small businesses to get a taste of trading from a shop rather than just a market stall, maybe it might lead to a more permanent base for some of them? With all the doom and gloom about the High Street, these projects really do help inject some life into the empty spaces. Independent Arts have also taken the former Monsoon shop and they will be doing classes for the community here. 4
NCCC is also looking at acquiring a building that can be an asset for the council and community. For the past 12 years we have rented accommodation and as we seem to grow a little more each year this seems to make sense to have a more permanent home. The High Street Heritage Action Zone is making good progress and the design code will be out to tender to create a document and living strategy for buildings in the town centre, which will really help building owners and the planning department. The aim is to not lose any more historic shop fronts and produce a guide to improve ones that have been “modernised” in the past. The markets in St Thomas’ Square went well before Christmas and the new company, Market Days CIC are focusing on reviving Newport’s market culture with a variety of markets including a Teen Market, encouraging young entrepreneurs. They have a Facebook page and website where you can keep up to date with all their news. Don’t forget that the Pavilion at Victoria Recreation Ground is open for teas and coffees in the morning, great if you want to relax with a hot drink whilst walking the dog, out for some exercise or catching up with friends at the playground.

‘Then and Now’ Isn’t it great looking at old photographs of places on the Island and then comparing them to how they look now. Thanks to Adam Thompson who has happily shared a couple of ‘Then and Now’ photos with us. Do you recognise these locations in Newport? Adam has been sent many photos from local residents and he goes out to match the location, or in some cases when he can’t get to it he uses the help of Google Maps.

News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 As we start a new year it is with hope that we will be seeing Covid 19 becoming less and the vaccination being rolled out to the wider community. It has been remarkable that so many scientists have worked together to achieve this in such a short space of time. We must hope that it is as effective as promised and that it will help us get our lives back to something of what we always thought of as normal. We must go into 2021 with the same determination to follow the rules and keep ourselves and our families safe as we did throughout most of 2020, and hopefully the gatherings of family and friends over the Christmas period will not impact on our newfound freedom. As I write this today it is with the news that GP surgeries will be receiving their first consignments of the Pfizer/ BioNTech vaccine ready to administer to care homes and older members of the community. In the longer term our fight against Climate Emergency is going to be an even tougher one. We need to all be mindful of the contributions we can make to help return our planet to good health. The massive tree planting initiative is something we can all get involved with in one way or another. Whether it is planting a tree or hedge in your own garden or joining others to plant areas of woodland for the future, and farmers are encouraged to look at the possibilities of agroforestry and a greater use of cover crops. Trees are the hardest working individuals in the sequestration of carbon‌ and it is the carbon that is damaging our atmosphere and leading to global warming. The IOW Council is 10
supporting all efforts to introduce trees back into our towns, and although this will not be instant, and of course the trees need to grow for some time before they reach their maximum ability to lock up carbon, it is certainly a big step in the right direction. Clearly, we can continue to work on our own efforts to recycle, avoid buying plastic-packed food stuff and walking or cycling when we don’t need to drive. It would be wonderful to get to the other end of 2021, knowing that we have made a difference however small. If you are interested to learn more, I would thoroughly recommend visiting the website woodlandtrust.org where you will find a lot of information and guidance about what needs to be achieved. I recently attended a team meeting with Newport Rivers. I was interested to learn that work to maintain and improve the condition of the Lukely Brook still progresses well. Fish passes have been installed at the Wellington Road section of the stream, to enable eels and fish to migrate upstream for breeding. It is hoped in the near future to achieve the same installation at the ford in Spring Lane as this will enable them to access Carisbrooke pond and ultimately find their way to the head waters at Plaish. It is so important that we take care of these streams and their occupants, Lukely is one of the rare and precious chalk streams in the UK (only some 200 known globally and 85% of them in the UK).
continued over the page
News Report from Cllr John Hobart continued Just as an aside for poultry/bird keepers, hopefully you are aware of the rules in place to keep your poultry safe as an outbreak of Avian Flu has been alerted. It is rare that it passes to humans but can devastate your livestock. Please visit the Government website for guidance if you are unsure what to do… but your main aim is to secure your own birds in a way that will prevent them from coming into contact with wild birds and you must ensure maximum hygiene at all times….whether you have just one pet hen or a small flock. I know that during this pandemic there have become many more hen/chicken owners who in the early stages of their ownership might not be aware of all the problems that can be encountered. I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year as we tackle the changes that Brexit will bring.

First of all, the Friends of St Mary’s wish everyone a much better 2021. As 2021 begins, the Friends are getting used to their new retail set up, and they still live-in hope that at some time in the future they might serve drinks somewhere in the hospital and of course get their trolley service running again. In the meantime, they have been very busy serving mainly staff at St Mary’s who have been wonderfully supportive. They were delighted that the shop could remain open during the second lockdown and Lisa, the Manager continues at the helm, supported by her wonderful band of volunteers. The shop continues to provide a much-valued service to hospital staff and to the small number of the visitors to the Trust. They are receiving some lovely Facebook comments stating how much the shop is appreciated and for the service that they provide. Well done and thank you to Lisa and her team for all their work in keeping the shop going so well. Christmas seemed to start very early for the 2020 season and seeing the decorations up and Christmas merchandise about, was a real morale booster for them all. They were able to distribute over 370 gifts to patients who had found themselves in hospital for Christmas Day and for staff who were working hard looking after them. These were delivered just before the big day as they had to be ‘rested’ for 72 hours before being distributed. Moving forward the Friends of St Mary’s hope that in spring 2021 they can again start the process of helping the Trust to buy things which will make life little easier for both patients and staff. If you find yourself at St Mary’s soon please don’t forget to pop into the Friends’ shop - every purchase helps!
