Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 It seems that every time I write I am discussing matters concerning our roads, parking and flooding, so not to disappoint I will continue on that theme!
Island Roads with your comments, but do be aware that a solution has to be found before there is an accident.
I have had many concerns raised regarding the large tractors and trailers that travel through Carisbrooke High Street and along Clatterford Road towards Shorwell. Many of these are heading to the Wight Energy Anaerobic Digester. I spoke with the Plant Manager and learned there is a strict protocol for these vehicles, stating that they must not travel through Newport or Carisbrooke High Street when laden, but must travel along Forest Road to Coppins Bridge. When they are un-laden they may use the local roads to access the point of collection, or their home base. Each vehicle is logged and its movements are recorded so that, if not following the protocol, the driver can be challenged if reported. These vehicles when working for farmers do not come under the same regulations. The plant manager assured me that he would like to know if his vehicles are breaking the rules and would respond seriously to reports, but of course can do nothing if the vehicles are not working for him. If you feel that a vehicle is breaking the rules you can report them to Wight Energy, the number to contact is: 01983 530285.
After my call out to people interested in the flood warden scheme there has been some interest, but a little disappointing that not more people living in the ‘at risk’ areas haven’t come forward. The training started on Saturday 18th June and will be followed by another session later in the year. The training is good fun, and not demanding, and will equip you with the information that you will need to ensure that you are able to be calm and safe should a problem occur again. It is well worthwhile and could save you money in the long run, not to mention avoiding the angst of a flooded house. It is important to remember that if you live on or near the river it is your responsibility to protect yourself. On a good note I have just heard from the manager of Southern Water to tell me that they will be removing the redundant sewer pipe which runs under the Caesar Road/Wilver Road Bridge. (the cause of so many of the blockage problems back in 2013).
I sat next our new High Sheriff, Robin Courage, at a trustees meeting at Carisbrooke Castle. In my conversation with the Manager of He told us about his plans for Isle of Wight Wight Energy he alluded to the problems Day, Saturday 24th September, and asked for that he raised with his executive about the ideas to get more people involved. If you have passing situation on Clatterford Road, which ideas, please put them forward, street parties, frequently forces his vehicles, or oncoming parades, flowers shows anything that will help vehicles to mount the pavement. The Highways us celebrate our beautiful Island (many clubs Department are working on a solution for this. and organisations are already on board). The first thoughts are to add yellow lines at certain points, long enough to accommodate At the same meeting we saw the retirement of large vehicles pulling in. I know that there are our Chairman of many years, Judi Griffin, who concerns about additional yellow lines on this has served the museum so very well and raised road but, if carefully planned, only very few its profile enormously. She will be missed and parking spaces would be lost. Please contact is being replaced by Gill Kennett. 4

Monthly Report for Newport by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, IoW, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: Julie.Jones-Evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Continuing to be a big concern for residents is the new arrangements for our refuse collection. Some people still haven’t had bins and some have had the wrong ones, or been wrongly assessed, so it is taking some time to sort through these issues. To help explain things to the new contractors, Amey, I took their manager on a walkabout in central Newport. By seeing first hand some of the difficulties faced by residents and his operatives alike, he was able to use his experience and come up with solutions that would make everyone’s life much easier.
in. Meanwhile if you are still having any issue with the bins you have been allocated or are still waiting for bins, please contact me. The yew and pine trees in Church Litten have been pruned as part of the project for the youth shelters and this month the wall will be removed allowing the area to be exposed prior to the new fence being installed. We are also working with the police to provide some fencing to an area of the library by the Valentine Gray memorial, as this area is attracting a lot of anti-social behaviour and causing many people some cause for concern. The fence will really help keep people safe in the park.
It was great to see so many residents and let them talk face to face with an Amey representative, especially as The war memorial in the people have had to wait up to park has now been finished, 30 mins to get through to the so please do take a look, it’s IW Council on the telephone located near the children’s to sort their issues out. Helping A Feathered Friend in Need. What do I do now? or Who do I call? Are the questions in the forefront of anyone’s mind if they have come across an injured bird, whether it be the common garden sparrow or one of the Queens protected swans. The first call should be to Wild Bird Aid which is a local ‘not for profit organisation’ run by Kerstin Voigt and Claire Newsome. Wild Bird Aid specialise in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of native birds. Claire specialises in all native bird species with emphasis on seabirds, pigeons and doves and Kerstin specialises in corvids (ravens, carrion crows, rooks, jays, magpies, jackdaws), birds of prey as well as swallows, martins, nightjars and swifts and all native birds. They will both endeavour to help all bird species, but at the moment they are unable to provide long time care for any birds not listed and will therefore need to get in touch with other rescues on the Island or mainland. Wild Bird Aid at present are caring for approximately 70 birds and everyday they are faced with problems of running an organisation that is so widely used by the local community. The areas in which they really need help is with volunteers to cover a variety of duties but particularly people to help with the transportation of injured birds and ideally they would like to have volunteers in all areas on the Island, so if an injured bird is found, the volunteer can be called upon to collect the bird and bring it to Wild Bird Aid which is based at a private home in Wootton Bridge for assessment and care. Volunteers are also needed to take care of animals in their own home e.g to rear orphaned small song birds, as Wild Bird Aid cannot accommodate all of these at their premises. Training will be provided if needed. They also require volunteers to help with feeding and cleaning and as you can imagine the running costs are very high and they are always happy to receive financial donations or if you have an Amazon account please take a look at the Wild Bird Aid wish list. Fund-raising plays an important role and they are looking for anyone who would like to come aboard to organise fundraising events to help raise the much needed funds. Some birds which are brought to them will obviously need more in depth medical treatment and on many occasion huge vets bills are accumulated, one such case recently was the swan that had swallowed a fishing hook and therefore vets bills, call out charges, x-rays and procedures were incurred and these can run into hundreds of pounds. Kerstin and Claire are passionate about what they do and desperately need your help. For more information please go to their website www.wild-bird-aid.uk and check out the Wild Bird Aid Wish List on Amazon or you can call Claire on 07874 660863 and Kerstin on 07935 487306. 10

Call Jill on 07932226731 Frack Free Isle of Wight Update By Sylvia May Many of you will have heard the disappointing news that North Yorkshire County Council granted planning permission for Third Energy to frack their existing well at Kirby Misperton, despite the council receiving over 4,000 objections to the application and only 36 (less than 1%) in favour. For more details on this visit www. frackfreeryedale.org The application was, no doubt, helped by the fact that this well was already in place having been previously drilled as a conventional well, just like here in Arreton. A fact which cannot be emphasised enough to anyone who is reassured by a company stating they are only planning conventional drilling. UKOG, who has been awarded the Isle of Wight licence, have gone to great lengths to portray themselves as being interested only in conventional processes; however this could prove to be a red herring. Many people believe ‘conventional drilling isn’t as bad as fracking’. But this is simply not the case. Frack Free Isle of Wight is determined to ensure that the public is informed of the real facts about oil and gas extraction. Find out more by joining us at our public meeting on, Tuesday 19th July, at The Wilberforce Hall, Main Road, Brighstone, PO30 4AH. (Car Parking in Warnes Lane). Doors open 6.30pm ready for presentation at 7pm followed by Q & A’s. Friendly & informal, refreshments available, all welcome. 15
