Welcome to the July issue and thank you for picking up a copy of your local community magazine. This month’s issue, as usual is packed with news, information, advertisers, feature editorials and much more. Now summer is here the Island is getting busier and there are many events happening throughout July and you can find details of these on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12, 13 and 14. July officially sees the start of Carnival season and we will keep you updated of when and where they are taking place. One of the best parts about my job is the positive feedback I receive from readers who let me know how useful and informative they find the magazine . I also hear from advertisers who have received a good response from their advert. I hope you all have a fantastic July and lets hope the sunshine continues and we can keep on enjoying the Island and all it has to offer.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07970009908 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Newport Parish Council is looking at how best to deliver improvements and services for the area this summer and will hold a public event in the autumn to get feedback from residents. The council is ten years old and has grown from having one member of staff and no assets to 7 members of staff, 4 public toilets, 4 recreation grounds, 5 allotments, Newport Victoria Pavilion and providing funding for an environment officer, crossing patrols, bus service, community donations, Christmas lights, Firework event etc. I have also led on improving the environment with our 20mph campaign and the pedestrian audit of the town centre. As a council it’s time to reflect and see what we need to prioritise and where to invest to ensure the council meets the requirements for the next few years. The full strategic plan document is available to view on our website with the documents for our June meeting. www. newportwight.org.uk/parish-council/ meetings-and-minutes/ I’m making progress with a project to improve an area of Hunnyhill at the junction with Heytesbury Road. The space is fairly uninspiring with a large amount of concrete and a telephone box. The plan is to provide a seat and install a moss garden to “green up” the area. The moss also helps remove pollutants from the air and this is a busy road so a great benefit. The new road junction layout at St Mary’s has been revised and the new plans will be able to be scrutinised soon. There was a huge amount of feedback and I am 4

looking forward to seeing how the plans have incorporated the needs of residents, pedestrians and cyclists. They have acknowledged that they need to look at how the wider network will be affected and also focus on Riverway and Coppins Bridge. I think we would all like to see the junction by Lidl improved and allow the planned pedestrian crossing to be brought forward. This is currently an awful environment for pedestrians. The anti-social behaviour around the Library seems to have reached a new peak and the IW Council has decided to fence the alcoves off to prevent people from sitting on the building. We have the shelters further down Church Litten, so there is a space for people to still gather. Youth outreach will be stepped up by Newport Youth Club which is really good news as some of the young people are quite vulnerable. I should hear soon if the bid for money from the Coastal Community Fund has reached the second stage for the development of South Street toilets into modern toilets, new Shopmobility area and a shop unit for local produce, arts and crafts. The bid is for £95,000 which will be match funded by the Parish Council. The plans for Post Office Lane toilets are getting to building regulations stage and now South Street toilets have been reopened, the town centre will have public facilities during the rebuilding phase.

What you got there? The little red on this month’s front cover is a personal favourite of mine and local photographer Zoe Cox was able to get up close and personal with this little lady. Zoe has taken the time and dedication to visit her local nature reserve on an almost daily basis (in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if it was more than once some days!) and her perseverance has paid off as Zoe is now in the position where she can hand feed her and stroke her. You can obviously see from this photo how inquisitive she is and wants to know exactly what Zoe has in her hand. This shows the trust that can grow between local wildlife and humans.

slimmingworld.co.uk 0344 897 8000

Zoe is a wildlife fanatic and has thousands of photos of foxes, birds of prey and her favourite of them all, red squirrels. Choosing just one picture for the front The views and opinions expressed by contributors cover became a very hard task as she has and advertisers are their own and do not reflect managed to capture the beauty of them all. the views of the Editor or Island Magazines unless stated otherwise. Island Magazines reserves the right to refuse or alter material where necessary. This is the second time that one of Zoe’s photos has appeared on the front cover, and last time was the amazing picture of a fox, which once again she gained the trust of, Plumbing & Electrical and he was happy to Bathrooms Showers Kitchens pose for her whilst she Toilets Taps Sinks took pictures.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 This month I will be talking a bit about boundaries! I’m pleased to say that at last month’s parish meeting the motion to include Carisbrooke in the name of the Newport Parish Council was accepted unanimously, giving Carisbrooke its much deserved recognition. This has to be ‘rubber stamped’ by the IOW Council and so hopefully in the very near future it will be known as Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council. I have to say I am delighted by this. On the August Bank holiday, 25th to 27th August 2018 there will be a ‘Beating of the Bounds’. This historic act will include a 28 mile walk staged over 3 days and will follow the boundary of Newport and Carisbrooke. Traditionally, and over centuries, this took place to familiarise the young with where their parish boundaries lay and included ceremony along the way. The 2018 event will be a relaxed and sociable affair (bring a picnic), and you can do all of it, a section or just a few miles if you want to take part. The walk is to commemorate the 10th anniversary of our parish council. All are welcome, it could be a once in a lifetime experience and something the younger parishioners will remember for years to come!! Please look out for notices on the Parish notice boards or contact the parish office on 01983 559119, or email clerk@ newportwight.org.uk, for further information! Also on the topic of boundaries, many of you may be aware that a boundary review is currently taking place. Although there will be boundary changes in other wards around Newport, currently it is proposed, and looks likely that Carisbrooke and Gunville will remain the same. The reason it isn’t changing is because it has the desired number of electorate and the idea of the boundary 10

commission review is to ensure that, as far as possible there are the same number of electors in each ward; that each ward, as far as possible, reflects similar interests and identities of local communities; that the electoral arrangements should provide for effective and convenient local government. I think this is good news as the boundary of Carisbrooke and Gunville is already quite expansive and it would be a shame for it to become any larger. The consultation will close on the 10th July; After consideration draft recommendations in September; Further consultation after this, with final recommendations published January 2019 and the new boundaries in place for the 2021 Elections. We have been struggling to keep on top of footpath maintenance due to the exceptional growing conditions in late spring. Paths on the IOW Rights of Way network are scheduled for two cuts between the 1st May and 31st August each year. This carried out by 4 operatives who do nothing else but strim and clear for that period. Paths, where wide enough are mown by our small tractor. Please be patient as it is a struggle this year, but also if you find that there is a path that has become completely inaccessible please let me know as it may be able to be moved on the schedule and cut sooner. Again, I would like to re-iterate the need for you to notify of any damage being caused by large tractors and cutting vehicles along our narrow lanes as we are trying to identify as far as possible who is causing the problem, agricultural contractors or highways contractors. Unfortunately, I think the mega tractors are here to stay, but we need to manage their operations to cause the minimum of damage.

Changes Through Understanding

After working for over 30 years in the music business and after his own personal experience of hypnotherapy, which changed his whole outlook on life, Richard Evans decided it was time to make a drastic career change and qualified as a Clinic Hypnotherapist at the Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy. During Richards own experience in 2004 where he was suffering with back problems which hindered simple tasks such as walking. He found that hypnotherapy helped him to cope mentally with the pain, made him re-consider his lifestyle which in turn helped him to lose weight and brought him to the point he is now. He realised that change comes through understanding and hypnotherapy can help with quitting smoking, stress, weight control, self esteem, phobias, sleeplessness and many more conditions. Clinical Hypnotherapy is a means of unlocking the unconscious mind. It is a combination of Richard, the clinical hypnotherapist and his client working together to create therapeutic changes which can permanently alter a person’s life. Richard acts as a guide by first talking and listening, he then gains an understanding of the client and their particular and personal needs. Hypnotherapy could be the way forward for you and Richard offers a FREE 15 minute consultation. Call 07973 511171 and see his main advert for more details.

Break Out of Your Box By Alex Tana After 13 years as museum curator and 5 years as management consultant, I started several businesses. On the journey I made mistakes but learnt about how people think and behave and how successful businesses should be structured and managed. Facing all kinds of challenges I discovered my hidden potential and my passion for personal empowerment.

This led me to qualify as a Business Coach, then as a Life Coach and finally as an NLP Practitioner. Over 25 years I have worked with hundreds of businesses and individuals. I am passionate about what I do and seeing the transforming power of coaching on both businesses and people. Business Coaching As a Business Coach I support businesses, and their owners, to develop the business and implement the best strategies to take it from where it is now to where the owner wants it to be. I provide the expertise to address every area of business making sure that everything is coherent with the owner’s expertise, the business plan and the market situation and avoid the typical mistakes that occur due to inexperience. Life Coaching & NLP Coaching As a Life Coach and NLP Practitioner I support individuals to develop and implement their own full potential, overcome limiting beliefs and habits, removing fears and phobias and allow them to discover a new level of confidence and self esteem. I help them to develop and implement successful life strategies to deal with a variety of situations, achieve their goals and turn dreams into reality. 15
