YOU can change YOUR life By Maggie Currie I have been to many seminars, courses, retreats, conferences, workshops where it is plainly obvious the people running them are using them to upsell their more expensive products. These can cost thousands of pounds and whilst they give you a glimpse of what they offer, you never actually get to benefit from it unless you pay out that money. There is also a lot of claptrap being sold out there that is solely to make money, and is not focused on YOU. I offer coaching and mentoring - for YOU to make changes in YOUR life, to help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it... There is no catch. If you would like help with your personal development, career development, relationship issues, limiting beliefs or something else, please get in touch via hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk and we can have a chat about how best YOU and I can work together. Sometimes it can seem to be too scary to be coached on your own, so I also offer group coaching. There is a powerful energy when groups get together for growth and transformation, both personally and collectively.

Do you want to make some changes in your life? Not sure where to start? Work with me, Maggie Currie, Professional Transformational Coach. Learn how to live life like YOU and not how you think other people want you to be. This will bring you more freedom, more fun and less stress. I BELIEVE IN YOU Get in touch today 01983 754 666 Email: hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk

Thank you for picking up a copy of your local community magazine which is filled with news, information, features and much more. There will be no mention of the weather this month, as I really can’t find any suitable words to describe it... I’m simply throwing open the curtains each day and just dealing with whatever season it is! The next couple of months are set to be really exciting as July kicks off carnival season and who doesn’t like a good carnival! There are 18 carnival events happening across the island in July and August with a mixture of children’s, main and illuminated. I think we can safely say there will be something for everyone. On page 13 you will find a handy list of locations, dates and times to cut out and keep so you don’t miss out. On a more serious note we have got together with Andy Hollebon of the Organ Donation Committee, Isle of Wight NHS Trust to bring awareness about the changes happening to organ donation next year and the importance of discussing your wishes with your family. You will find this feature on page 12. I hope you all have a great July and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

Monthly News Report from Cllr John Hobart. Member for Carisbrooke and Gunville E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 Riverfest this year was again a very successful event down on Newport Quay, with the NCPC manning a stand. It was a great opportunity to chat to lots of people about both positive and negative things going on in our area. Unfortunately the NCPC will now only be represented one day a week in the main Newport Library, Wednesday 10am – 12pm due to a shortage of staff. Urgent matters can be dealt with by appointment at the Guildhall, email or phone ahead to ensure that someone is available to see you. Whilst talking about Newport Quay it is pertinent to mention that we continue to progress with plans for regeneration of the harbour. The proposed consultation period in terms of the presentation of the masterplan, with attendance from the design team, will be 15th, 16th and 17th July at 30 High Street, Newport (opposite the Guildhall) and the exhibition panels and website will be available for a 4 week period. After which they will collate and assess the responses and look to prepare the final draft. Do call in and have a look if you are interested in both seeing this exciting project and registering your opinion, whether for or against the proposals. We are optimistic that our plans to move the Islands Historic Records office will move forwards in the not to distant future. Unfortunately the current location, Hillside – just off Fairlee Road. does not meet the high standards, required by National Archives, to preserve and protect some of these irreplaceable documents. As such 6

they were unwilling to give accreditation in the long term. We are currently looking at upgrading property already in the council’s portfolio to meet the levels of care required by National Archives. Our plan is to make the records not only safer, but far more accessible for research and viewing. We are hopeful that if we can make this plan work we will also be able to incorporate a heritage centre at the same place enabling us to display some of the vast number of wonderful artefacts that are currently in storage and are, unfortunately, rarely seen and enjoyed by the public. I am looking forward to a meeting in July, on the Island, with Dr Martin Hurst chairman of SRFCC (Southern Regional Flood and Coastal Committee). As the SRFCC have made large financial contributions towards works done on our Island flood defences (most recently Monkton Mead) it will be a pleasure to show him the successful projects that we have completed here, whilst having the opportunity to discuss ways that we may avail ourselves of their assistance in the future. In June I had a meeting at Clatterford Rec with Cllr Martin, the town Clerk and a representative from a company that provide play equipment for parks and open spaces. The idea was to discuss what we would like to see there and get quotes for the installation of some equipment, including the improvement of the soft surface rubber. We have funds allocated for this project, but we are still waiting for all quotes to come in before proceeding.

Monthly News Report from Cllr John Hobart continued As a final note, the new, £58m, state of the art, Mechanical Waste Treatment Plant located on Forest Road has undergone its first 30 day trial. As a result some adjustments are being made before it undergoes it’s second trial later in the summer. If everything goes according to plan it should be open for receiving waste by the end of 2019/start 2020. When up and running this joint project with Amey will not only recycle waste but will provide recovered energy.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07970009908 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Plans for the new public toilets in Post Office Lane are progressing well. We now have planning permission and our contractors have supplied us with the final costs and production plan. We are also going to be working with AJ Wells for a piece of public art in the area and for cladding the prefabricated toilet block. The parish council has also requested that the public have the option to use contactless payment to save rummaging around for change. The finished building will also feature a sedum (green) roof and a kiosk which we hope a Community Interest Company or charity will take on to raise funds and provide work for disadvantaged people.

taken around the town by the IW Council’s heritage officer, Richard Smout, showing some of our notable buildings and also giving them the human stories behind them. They will be writing a report which they will share with the IW Council that will give us valuable insights into how we can protect our 200 listed buildings at risk. This report and also the fact that they have been down to the Island will greatly help us in applying for funding to assist with this task. Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council will be submitting a bid to the Heritage High Street Fund this month.

My other project with AJ Wells is drawing to a close and any day now the new town map will be installed in the High Street. It’s been a long time in development, but I believe it’s been worthy of the wait. We also have canvas prints of the map for purchase so you can have one of your own adorning your wall.

We are due to hear also in July about our bid to the Future High Streets Fund, which will be transformative should we be successful. I understand that many towns have applied so we will just have to see!

Shaping Newport is very busy, we are getting the design for the High Street parklet finalised, the technical drawings for the pavement widening in South Street and Drill Hall Road are being done by Island Roads and we are working with a company to have a big screen, showing some of this summer’s sporting events, possibly in Church Litten. Newport played host to a panel of experts from Historic England who were interested in our buildings and public spaces. They were given a presentation about Newport, covering our attributes and also our challenges. They were then 10

Work has begun on plans for the Victoria Pavilion at the Newport Victoria Recreation Ground. The first stage is a comprehensive survey which will enable the drawings to be created. Our intention is to restore the front of the pavilion and provide improved facilities, such as a kitchen, function rooms, changing rooms and parking, whilst keeping cricket at the heart of these plans. It has been home to Newport Cricket Club for over 100 years and I hope for many years to come. If you would like to hire the current facilities for a regular class, party or workshop please get in touch. Parish Office 559119.

Do your family know whether you want to be an organ donor? Have you ever talked about organ donation with them? If the answer is no, then you’re not alone; sadly, many donation opportunities are lost every year because families don’t know if their loved one wanted to be a donor. From spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered an organ donor when they die unless they had recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. Even with a change in the law next year we need more people to talk about organ donation to increase the number of transplants that happen. It will be just as important in 2020 to join the Organ Donation Register and discuss your wishes with family and friends as it is now. You can record your decision to opt in or out on the Organ Donor Register. Those excluded will be people under 18, people who have lived in England for less than 12 months or who are not living here voluntarily, and people who lack the capacity to understand the change. Adults covered by the change will still have a choice whether they want to be an organ donor and which organs they would like to donate, and their families will still be involved before organ donation goes ahead. In the UK…… • Around 6,000 people There’s no time like the present to talk about it. Nationally across the UK are waiting for millions of people are on the NHS Organ Donor Register an organ transplant already but only one in every hundred will die in • Three people a day die in circumstances where they could donate, so every donor is need of a transplant due to precious. Here on the Island there are about 60,000 people a shortage of people being on the Organ Donation Register which means there are willing to donate organs around 80,000 people who are not on the register. Last year • Only one in three adults there were 8 organ donors on the Island resulting in 20 has told their partner / family patients receiving a transplant. You could help someone their organ donation decision. waiting for that vital call, by joining the NHS Organ Donor More info www. Register and by telling your family. Register now at organdonation.nhs.uk www.organdonation.nhs.uk. Staff at St. Mary’s Hospital work closely with Specialist Organ Donation Nurses from the national NHS Blood and Transplant organisation to ensure that organ donation proceeds smoothly in a way that meets the wishes of the donor and family. The Island’s Organ Donation Committee want to start a support group for everyone with an interest in organ donation – friends and family of donors, donor recipients and anyone else with a particular interest. This informal group would provide an opportunity to talk about experiences and to participate in awareness raising activities. If you would be interested in being part of the Island’s Organ Donation Support Group then please contact me by e-mailing andyhollebon@nhs.net or on 07544-555839.
