Powers of Attorney – If you cease to be able to manage your property and financial affairs or your health and welfare who will speak on your behalf ? Helping You Achieve Your Aims In Life 2

Hello and welcome to the July issue. I’m extremely excited that this issue is back to being in print as the last two months have been online only due to Covid-19 regulations and although this worked well at the time I know many of you missed going out to pick up your copy from local distributors. I haven’t yet reinstated the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section as most events have been cancelled and everything is still very much ‘up in the air’ but to ensure you don’t get bored I have included a double page puzzle section which will keep your brain active!! Following the great response I had last month on how great the new ‘recipe’ section was I thought it was only right that I give you another mouth watering treat, and you will find this on page 14.

I have got together with our hedgehog carers this month and on page 16 you will find a useful and informative article along with some gorgeous pictures. Inside you will find reports from local Councillors ensuring residents are kept up to date with news for the area. It is great to see local shops and businesses opening again and shopping will certainly be different to what we are used to, but I think with all that we have gone through the last three month we can adapt to anything. Keep safe everyone and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Slowly we are beginning to get back to some sort of normality in Newport with more shops and services being open. I’m sure we’ve all missed popping into our favourite places and seeing familiar faces. Creating a more welcoming space with more planters and seating is still a priority for the Community Council however this has has been more difficult to bring into reality than I had anticipated. However, we have identified a budget that we can work with for post Covid19 recovery projects and the Isle of Wight Council is aware of this. In all the survey results I have seen about easing of lockdown, people have said they feel nervous about returning to the town centres. They want to have space to be able to social distance, sit down and see visible signs of cleanliness. Whilst shops and other businesses can put in their own measures and indeed have to by law, it’s a bit more challenging in the public areas. But what we are continuing to work towards is this being a visibly welcoming town. This is especially important for when visitors return.

People First Zone element of the project. This is because the government have encouraged the whole country to create better spaces for walking and cycling. This means we can use the High Street Heritage Action Zone projects as a way of bringing this forward more quickly and alongside the Local Walking and Cycling Infrastructure Plan which was adopted in April.

Newport is in a really good position to utilise the enhanced government funding to enhance the environment.

Now the High Street Heritage Action Zone has begun it’s worth recapping on the outcomes for the 4 year project. • Shop Front Improvement Scheme • Town Design code development • People First Zone • Upper Floors brought into use • Public Realm improvements Newport and Carisbrooke Community The High Street Heritage Action Zone has now commenced and the steering group has Council has moved offices and you can now find us at: made a decision to bring forward the 4

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans The Loft, Granary Court, Upper Floor, 128 Pyle Street, Newport, PO30 1JW Tel: 559119 Work has been going on at the Pavilion in earnest to replace most of the floor. An examination showed that most of the floor boards were rotten and some joists too. We are very fortunate to have a skilled maintenance team at NCCC who are able to carry out the work. This saves huge amounts of money and time as they were Old Newport High Street shop, an example of what restoration can able to get straight to work look like. Photo courtesy of Brian Greening rectifying the situation. We all look forward to seeing the cricket and our activity groups return soon. More good news is that the Post Office Lane toilet development is now going full steam ahead. Work will begin very soon to demolish existing toilets and to put in the services ready for when the new building arrives. It is a prefabricated building from Sweden which will have individual cubicles which are modern and easy to clean. The whole space will be enhanced and a pleasure to use. I anticipate the work to be completed by early autumn. Thank you for your patience while this work is carried out and meanwhile South Street toilets will be available.

LIONS CLUBS OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT - WE SERVE In January 1970 the first Lions club was inaugurated in Ryde. There are now 3 more Clubs and a branch club on the Island. Although these clubs are all working to the same goal, to serve the communities of the Island and beyond, they are all autonomous of each other as they can conduct their business and efforts in different ways, yet can also work together on larger projects. This year Ryde Lions Club are celebrating their 50th anniversary. The club, which was first chartered as the Isle of Wight Lions Club on the 13th January 1970 had 17 Members but when Newport Lions Club was set up The Isle of Wight Lions Club was renamed The Lions Club of Ryde and became the Mother club to Newport. Shortly after, two more clubs started up, first at Ventnor then Sandown & Shanklin Club. Finally, another started in Cowes as a branch of Newport some 16 years ago. Many thousands of pounds have been collected on the island to help local communities but also a much smaller amount has gone to help people who have suffered catastrophic disasters all over the world such as Nepal, and the awful tsunami at Christmas 2004, and closer to home in Boscastle and the floods in Yorkshire. 100% of all monies collected from the public is sent to nominated good causes. Volunteers receive no remuneration for their work in the community but give their time willingly while making sure they have fun doing it! The island clubs are part of a much larger organisation called Lions Clubs International (LCI) and they are one of the largest service organisation in the world with 1.4 million members in over 200 countries. Collecting money is just one part of what they do, as members of this huge organisation they carry out many other tasks as well, such as painting a room or providing carpets for a deserving family or doing beach cleans, building garden fences for people who are unable to afford a replacement of their own and help run free prostate screening tests for men on the island. They also help charitable organisations such as Mountbatten Isle of Wight to run fundraising events, or work hard with others to help keep the Daisy bus running, so that islanders can attend hospital on the mainland for cancer treatment. They care for the environment by collecting plastic and rubbish around our island and collecting used spectacles for use in emerging countries of the world. There are always opportunities to be part of a Lions club on the Island and they are keen to hear from anyone who has a desire to know more about what they do, how they help people and the enjoyment that can be gained from helping others. You can contact them on the island by calling 0345 833 5789 and you will be contacted by the club in your area.

Book your free ‘Meet & Greet’ appointment now Melanie Marshall - Chief Isle of Wight Pet Sitter Landline: 0118 983 1906 or Mobile: 07972 032166 E: mel@forpetssake.org.uk www.forpetssake.org.uk @pawfect22 “What exactly does pet/house sitting involve?” I’m a ‘Pet Nanny’. Just like a baby sitter, except I care for your animals and home, when you need a break/holiday, business trip or respite. I stay in your house, keep your pets happy, healthy and stimulated, clean up after your pets and myself, leave your home clean and odour free. I’ll look after 2, 3 and 4 legged pets, but no Arachnids or Venomous Snakes . “Do you provide dog walking services?” Yes, if it is part of the house sit, (long stay) Day sit or Doggy Day Care, but not as a stand alone service. “ How much do you charge for your services?” It depends on what type of service you want, what breed/animal or pet you’d like us to care for. It’s best to arrange a ‘Meet & Greet’ appointment so we can discuss your requirements, routines and then agree a fee. You can view our price list on the main website. For ‘First time’ bookings, I’m happy to negotiate especially for longer stays/ bookings. “Do you have any experience with horses?” Yes ... My husband is the equine expert. ‘Horse whisperer’- He has an inner calm, a quietness that horses love. He’s an experienced driver and eventer. Me... I have

some experience and basic knowledge of care and can turn in/out your horse, feed, water, pick feet and muck out pens and I can ride. Please call me if you would like to meet ‘Mr Whisper’. “Why are you providing/promoting this service on the Island, when you don’t live here?” When I first came to the Island in May 2017, to dog & house sit for a client who had just moved to Ventnor from mainland; they quickly pointed out that there wasn’t a professional dog & house sitting service for long stays who provided the services that I do. I then set up ‘Pawfect Sitting Services’ and started receiving bookings from September 2017. The business exploded, I renamed it to ‘For Pet’s Sake’. (Until March 20th 2020 and Covid-19 forced me to close temporarily. We are now open again and look forward to caring for your babies and your home.)

Although the photographer of this meadow, James Whillier sees this view many times a day he never gets bored of it and certainly doesn’t take it for granted. News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 It’s amazing how quickly the months go by and how we have settled into the routine of lockdown and are anticipating the gradual lifting of the restrictions. The Island seems to have fared quite well compared to other parts of the UK and we need to continue being vigilant to try to ensure that we don’t get the, possible, second peak on the Island. I’m sure the idea of coming out of lockdown means different things to different people, for some excitement and for others fear, but the one thing that this has proved is that we are generally a caring and close community and we can work on this together.

government funding to help us improve cycling routes on the Island, which is good for both residents and tourists and what better place to enjoy countryside rides. This exercise is so important as the leisure centres are still unable to open.

Later this year the Island will be hosting the Le Blanc Team Challenge, a cycling race and time trial. Bradley Wiggins and top chefs will be behind this event in September. I believe this is a great opportunity to promote our excellent Island produce, from fresh foods to beers and spirits. We have such an amazing As we come out of lockdown it is time for array of foods that we produce here that us to look ahead at the opening of facilities, this presents a great opportunity as the shops and tourist outlets, and in my opinion event will have extensive media coverage. News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke 10.30am & 12.30pm was8.30am, won by a Ryde Man competing and winning a cycle race in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA in 1885. (I’m trying to find out more about it). Just shows that there has been an enthusiasm for cycling for a long on our Island! In the meantime I can only wish you well and urge you continue to follow the rules and cautiously enjoy visiting the town centres and other places that you have avoided for so long. I personally believe that the wearing of face-coverings is a good idea, if only to indicate to others that we are still taking this virus seriously and trying to protect those around us.

Home-Made Ice Cream Summer is here at last... and nothing beats a bowl of ice cream on these sweltering days. Gone are the days of needing specialist equipment and with just two ingredients plus your chosen topping it’s so easy to make yourself. This recipe is a favourite of Sophie Toogood who enjoys making this silky smooth ice cream with daughter Layla. They have been experimenting with flavours and below is the main recipe and some of their favourite suggestions for flavours. Ingredients 1 can of condensed milk 2 cups or 450ml of double cream Method 1) Whip the double cream until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to over whip. 2) Add in the can of condensed milk and continue to whip just until the condensed milk is combined with the cream. 3) Add in any flavorings you wish and stir through the mixture. (see ideas below). You can make any combination you wish! 4) Scoop ice cream into resealable tub. Cover the ice cream mixture in clingfilm to stop ice crystals forming, put on the lid and put into the freezer for 6-8 hours until set. If you wanted to make mint chocolate chip ice cream, add in 2tsp of mint extract, a few drops of green food colouring and a handful of chocolate chips. For chocolate ice cream, add in 2tbsp of cocoa powder (it will look light at first, but it soon darkens up while the ice cream is in the freezer) You can also buy some chocolate sauce and drizzle it through the mixture and on top as an extra burst of flavour.

Looking out for Hedgehogs... Some people are lucky enough to have a regular nightly visit from these adorable mammals. The island as a whole has a love for all wildlife and it is good to know that there is a specialist team of hedgehog carers for the island and their work involves offering advice, support and information to the public. They also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. We have got together with Zoe from Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight and Zoe has kindly given some advice below to ensure the ongoing protection of any hoggies we come across. What to do if you have a hedgehog visiting your garden? Always have fresh water available and you can also put out dry cat or dog food. Make sure any netting is secured as they could get tangled up. If you have ponds either cover over or add in a ramp for access in case they fall in. Have a messy patch as they love rummaging in undergrowth. Enjoy them from a far. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble If a hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be walking like they are drunk or unsteady – this is a sign of dehydration. A hedgehog walking with purpose might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest, she would be carrying nesting and then would transfer the babies. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see strimming injury’s, always feel around before gardening. If there is an obvious injury place the hedgehog in a light colour towel, in a high sided box and call myself or Jacquie on 01983 613145 and we will offer the advice you need. Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight often attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and their Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where they provide updates of the hedgehogs they have looked after. www.facebook.com/saveourhedgehogs
