elcome to the July issue and thank you for picking up a copy of ‘your local community’ magazine.
At the time of writing we are having some great summer sunshine and it’s nice to see so many people out and about enjoying the island while still keeping social distancing practices in place. The beaches have been busy and some favourite picnic sites around the island have been bustling with families and holiday makers making the most of what the island has to offer. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section is being slowly reintroduced as a monthly feature, but the events are very much dependent on government guidelines. You will find this section on page 14. If you have an event happening in August, please feel free to email the details to islandmagazines@gmail.com. Inside this issue you will find the latest news and information for your area, our puzzle section, editorials and adverts from local businesses who all appreciate your support when using their services. I hope you all have a great July and hope the sun keeps shining and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report from Cllr Joe Lever - Carisbrooke & Gunville Mobile - 07736 663 657 | Email - joe.lever@iow.gov.uk Facebook - @CllrJoeLever | Instagram - @cllrjoelever Hello again! So, what’s been happening in the last month? In a nutshell, mostly planning applications and roads! There are a number of planning applications scheduled or waiting to go through the planning committee; first up is the HMO on Castle Road. Myself, Cllr Martin Oliver and residents have met with council officers and Two Saints to ensure that, should the application be approved, there are assurances of its smooth running: both for existing residents of Castle Road and potential residents of Castle Lodge. Last update I mentioned the delay to the Arthur Moody Drive applications going to the planning committee. This was down to a number of reasons but mostly due to the interruption of an archaeological assessment and the subsequent rescheduling, amid an unprecedented amount of planning applications being submitted. Lots of residents have been in touch about issues and potential solutions regarding many problematic sections of road. I have an ever-growing list and I’ll be making my way through that with officers over the coming weeks and months. I hope to have specific updates in future reports.

The new and more ageinclusive play equipment was successfully installed at Victoria Rec and - bar a teething problem with a musical section of the equipment - it has been very well received. At June’s NCCC (Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council) full council meeting, due to concerns about COVID, councillors decided to postpone this year’s fireworks event and reallocate those funds to the Christmas events budget. And finally, NCCC will also have a brand-new website going live soon. It’ll have a fresh new look and should prove even easier to use for residents. We look forward to hearing people’s feedback! As always, if you need to get in touch, please use the contact information at the top of this page.

News report from Cllr Matthew Price for Newport, Fairlee & Whippingham • 07833 537668 • 01983 524320 matthewpricewhippingham@gmail.com
First of all can I say a big thank you to everyone that came out to vote whether in person or by post. I could not be at both Polling Stations all of the time but did spend the day of the election at one or the other and it was great to see you. I am delighted to have been elected to represent my old ward of Newport North which I have proudly represented for the last eight years and will now continue to do so, I also now represent a huge new area which also now includes the whole of Whippingham. Many of you will already know me, but if you have not heard of me or spoken to me, I am a very approachable and visible councillor and I am always willing to listen and always ready to try and help and discuss issues with residents. I was born and bred on the Island and come from a large Island family, I have lived in Newport all my life and still live there with my family and my young daughters. I have also worked in a family garage business since 1987 with my father and took over back in 1999. I also serve on Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council, (recently as Vice Chairman) I am on Whippingham parish Council and also have many other community roles including Vice Chair of Governors at a local school. Coming out of the pandemic the town has suffered badly and as things slowly go back to some normality, I would like to thank everyone for playing their part in adhering to the rules and helping us all get back to normal life as soon as we all can! I know many Newport Residents are concerned about the continued issues
regarding the endless traffic queues into Newport along Fairlee Road and Staplers Road. The traffic improvement schemes at St Marys junction has, although so far worked well in that area, appears to have made Coppins Bridge and Fairlee and Staplers Road worse. I am hopeful that the scheme to widen the road and add lanes at St Georges Way will have a positive effect on Coppins bridge. As many of you will be aware the IOW Festival has been rescheduled for September and although things should be at a much more relaxed point by then I am watching the situation closely and how best to influence the decisions as they are taken and that the event is to go ahead in a safe and covid secure manner. Thank you to everyone who has supported the petition to stop housing being built at Seaclose Park, we successfully stopped this outrageous idea in its tracks. During this campaign hundreds of people got in touch to express their views that Newport Football Club should be relocated to Seaclose rather than at the racecourse (in Whippingham). Some of you will know I have been a huge advocate for trying to relocate Newport Football club to Seaclose Park. The current planning permission is to build the new facility at the racecourse and this is due to start in September. The new administration at County Hall are looking at the viability of Newport FC going to Seaclose over the next few weeks and hope this last effort to persuade the Council will be successful. I look forward to meeting with many of you over the next four years and you can reach me on the details above.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Things have now settled down at IW Council with a new team of councillors in charge and I’m really excited about the job I have been given - Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Tourism and Business Development . It’s a great opportunity and I’ve learnt so much in Newport over the years, I feel I’ve got a good set of skills and experience to do a good job. Shaping Newport is collating ideas for parking solutions for the town as it’s a constant issue that we never seem to solve. Balancing parking with creating a better environment for pedestrians and cyclists is a challenge that we must overcome, so any ideas are welcome. Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council have agreed to my proposal regarding a funding application to the Urban Tree Challenge to get some more Lucerne Elms in town, either at Hookes Way or Towngate. These are a species that support a rare butterfly as well as being resistant to Dutch Elm Disease. We lost a cluster of these trees in the recent high winds so it would be great to be able to replace them. High Street Heritage Action Zone is going well, the draft Design Guide will be going out to consultation soon and we are also starting to work on the Shop Front improvement grant application process so we can start to fund these improvements. The photography project is also near completion and I’m really looking forward to seeing the results of that. NCCC is progressing with the purchase of a High Street empty shop, it’s always a lengthy 10
process but each week we make progress, so we are getting there. We want to be able to have a stake in our High Street and put some community use in there, such as a Heritage Centre, meeting place and popup shops. Shaping Newport has just moved out of 30 High Street and has moved in to 33 High Street which was formerly used by Independent Arts (who have moved into the old Monsoon building). Having a space on the High Street has proved really useful, enabling pop-up shops, consultation with residents and partners, but the space wasn’t quite big enough. 33 is a much larger space and can be used for a variety of uses and recently Young Enterprise from Medina College had their shop there, selling hand dyed, tie dye, socks and recycled clothing. Look out for more small businesses and pop-up job fairs. Talking of jobs at the moment cafes, hotels, pubs and restaurants are crying out for staff and especially would welcome older people who have life experience as well as young people looking for their first job. Hospitality is really rewarding and you learn so many skills and there are hours to suit all lifestyles. Contact the Job Centre or IW Jobs to find out more. It’s wonderful to hear the IW is leading the country in the number of vaccinations per head of population, this must give confidence to our visitors this summer and to islanders, that life can begin to go back to normal. If you are near Lidl in Newport soon do check out the bank by the dual continued over the page
News Report by Julie Jones-Evans continued carriageway as Island Roads are leaving it as a meadow for the summer. There is a wide variety of grasses, including sizeable patches of Buckshorn plantain. The big yellow patches are Horseshoe vetch and Birdsfoot trefoil. Also present are Oxeye daisy, Rock rose, Red Clover, Field buttercup and Common mallow. The plants have gone in now opposite that site at the entrance to Holyrood Street and fruit trees are to follow. I think plants and flowers not only support wildlife but they also uplift us humans, so I’m always on the lookout for sites that may be neglected, to become full of flowers and plants. Newport is the heart of the Biosphere! Many residents have been contacting me regarding the application for Pizza Express
to become a bar and I have suggested that there’s a public meeting to discuss this. Unfortunately, now we have had an extension to the current Covid-19 restrictions this won’t be possible yet. I am concerned about the disturbance to residents above and opposite the site and I have raised this with the IW Council. Speeding cars and air quality are also issues that residents raise with me and IWC are looking at a street plan for Newport, seeing if it is possible to reduce the amount of vehicles coming through town - the High Street is often used as a through road rather than a destination - unnecessarily high volumes of traffic makes it quite unpleasant to be there at times.
