June 2016

Dear Readers Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe that close to half the year has gone already. I’m loving these light evenings and there is no better place to be then here on the Island, especially if the sun is shining. We have had a few really nice hot days recently, as well as a few miserable ones too, but lets hope that once summer is finally here the sun will shine every day. The Island will be getting ready for the Isle of Wight Festival in June and there will be celebrations happening across the Island to mark the occasion of the Queens 90th Birthday. There are many other events happening too and you will find details of them all in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 8 and 9. If you are holding or know of an upcoming event please drop me an email so we can include it in the next issue. I hope you enjoy reading this months issue and catching up on all the latest news and information happening in the community. Until next month... Debbie

Monthly Report for Newport by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, IoW, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: Julie.Jones-Evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans any project several elements have to come Last month I stepped down together and be instigated before a spade from my role as Chairman of Newport Parish Council and am so pleased that can go in the ground, and with all the good my fellow Newport Central representative on weather we have been having, I hope that this will now move at a steady pace. NPC Cllr Lois Prior was unanimously elected as the new one. She will be assisted by Cllr Jane Perry as Vice Chairman. Not only are these both very bright and capable people, but being women hopefully will inspire other women to get involved in local politics. I am leading a campaign to encourage more women to stand for council next May in both the County and Town/Parish elections, as there is still a severe gender imbalance to be corrected.

Do you live in a street that could benefit from Residents Parking Zone? Many residents are frustrated at the amount of commuter parking in the residential areas, which means they find it hard to park their cars, and whilst no-one has the right to park outside their house on a public road, it makes life difficult especially with young children, heavy shopping and the less able. RPZ can offer a remedy to I had some great news on my this situation and at the 2 projects in Church Litten. moment a group of IW Firstly the Isle of Wight Councillors are working College are starting the build together to develop a pilot for the memorial of the 1943 scheme, which I will also bombing Newport, which trust to re-jig some of the car will have the names of the parks, creating some longer 20 people who died on it. We are planning an unveiling on Wednesday 15th of June at 6.30pm and everyone is welcome to attend.

Finally, as parking is such an emotive topic of conversation on the Island, you may like to respond to the IW Council’s new consultation on developing a car parking strategy for the whole Island. Break the Cycle Community Interest Company has been set up to help and support survivors of domestic abuse to move forward with their lives now they have escaped from an abusive relationship and are living independently. Weeks, months and years afterwards, a domestic abuse survivor, although away from the violence, can still live a life mentally imprisoned by the trauma they have experienced. Many reporting a deep sense of self doubt and feelings of uselessness and insecurity about the future. When talking to men and women who would potentially take part in the program, many spoke of a need for support to forgive themselves for being victims of abuse and overcome a lack of self worth so they were able to have a better outcome in life for not only themselves but their children also. The six module programme is designed to fill the gap between agency provision and social care. While external agencies support these men and women to build external aspects of recovery, ‘Mind the Gap’ will work with the internal aspects of recovery supporting participants to not only come to terms with their experience but live a fulfilled life past the experience too. The three directors, Maggie Currie, Kelvin Currie and Ian McLaughlin, aim to be working with a diverse range of men and women coming from all ethnicities and backgrounds. There will be no restriction to participating in the program for beneficiaries. We will be using a range of training material that complements each participant’s learning style. The sessions will also be interactive and engaging to allow the participants to learn through practice and experience vs theory. They are also planning to work with homeless people early in 2017 to help and support them to move forward in their lives and reintegrate into society.

Super Slimmers in Kim Street’s brand new Slimming World Group lost an amazing 263 pounds in just 7 days, that’s a whopping 19 and a half stones in just 1 week! The members, who attend the group every week follow Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses and fruit and veg. It helps people make healthier choices and lose weight without ever going hungry or ever feeling like they’re missing out. Kim explained, ‘each week in our friendly group we make sure everyone’s motivated for the week ahead. We share new recipes, advice and ideas for coping with challenges – and we have loads of fun! I know from my own experience that it can be nerve-wracking to walk into a group for the first time but I can assure people that there’s no judgment, just respect and care. ‘ The Slimmer’s success has spread fast and a new session has already been added to the group which is held at St. Thomas of Canterbury School, Carisbrooke on a Monday night and is now open at 5.30pm and again at 7.30pm. Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 May saw the launch of the car parking strategy consultations for the period 2016 -2021, these continue to 5th July. The purpose of these is to identify the way car parking is planned and it is important to share your views. These could range from car parking permits on your street, the way yellow lines are organized through to the car parking charges imposed this year (and many more). The document is available to view and comment on at www. iwight.com/consultations Parking has been an issue around the Carisbrooke and Gunville areas for some time now and despite my best efforts I am making slow progress trying to get matters sorted out! Some of the problems that have been discussed with me include the impact that the parking charges in our Carisbrooke car park are having on small businesses in the area, the problems of large vehicles mounting the pavements along Clatterford Road whilst negotiating past parked cars when faced with oncoming vehicles, dustcarts and emergency vehicles being unable to access areas such as Spring Lane and Castle Hill (cars are parking in these roads to avoid car park charges), so I would urge you, if you are affected to share your views or what you consider might be a solution. The more voices, the more we will be heard.

Christmas 2013 we have been very pro-active in trying to sort out the defenses for the Island to prevent any repetition. Due to the climate change situation we must be alert to ensure that we are prepared for whatever happens. One of the key factors in beating this is keeping the public aware and encouraging them to take a proactive stance as it will take more than just the council to manage these events should they reoccur. I will have also attended one of the West Wight Coastal Flood and Erosion Risk Management Roadshows, a consultation aimed at looking at the West Wight, including Newport Harbour and surrounding areas. This consultation runs until 30th of June and it aims to raise public awareness and hear views on the strategies being developed. You will find a summary report and questionnaire at: www. iwight.com/consultations The ‘Bus Shelter’ is wonderful news after the closure of the night shelter for the homeless, this converted double decker bus will be such an asset, particularly during the winter. I have concerns about the location of this bus as I feel it needs to be in a well-lit area, close to shops with safe access.

I attended the launch of the Churchill Trail earlier this month. For those of you with an interest in walking and history this will give a fascinating insight into the early life of Winston I have attended several Floodwatch meetings Churchill and his parents as it visits locations around Newport. These meetings are to all around the Island, from Cowes – where his inform residents of proposals to recruit volunteers, the attendance is varied, but if you parents met and became engaged, to Ventnor are interested in becoming involved or finding which he loved as a child. Visit Isle of Wight have produced a leaflet mapping out the walks out more there will be a final meeting on the which is colourful and informative. I feel that Thursday 2nd June at the Methodist Hall on naming these walks and linking them to local Gunville Road at 5.30pm. If you would like more information regarding Floodwatch please history makes the whole experience more contact Maxine Yule, our Parish Clerk on 01983 memorable for locals and visitors alike. 559119 (email clerk@newportwight.org.uk). The Perfect Summer Cake I’ve been slaving over a hot stove trying to find a quick and easy cake recipe… I’ve tried and tested it several times and although its edible and tastes nice, I’ll admit it’s not the best cake I have ever made, but, and here is the good news, there are only 2 ingredients involved and one of them is ice cream and who doesn’t like ice cream. The other ingredient is self raising flour. The good thing with this cake is you can use any flavour ice cream but preferably full fat. I have tried it with low fat and dairy free but they just aren’t right – you can’t have a low fat cake, its just not right. The two ingredients you need are 175g of self raising flour and 1 pint of melted ice cream. Turn on the oven to 180°C and line a loaf tin with parchment paper. Sieve the flour into a bowl and add the melted ice cream and whisk or beat away. I used an electric whisk just to make it a bit easier. Make sure the two ingredients are combined and then pour into the loaf tin and bake for 3540 minutes. If you want to get creative, before you pour into the loaf tin you can add any little extras such as chocolate chips or nuts and you’ll need about 75g of these. As before ensure they are mixed through evenly and bake as normal. Every oven is different and you can check if its cooked all the way through by using a skewer or knife in the centre of the cake and just make sure it comes out clean. If you think the top is cooking too fast you can always cover with some foil. Once cooked, leave to cool slightly and then turn out and enjoy a slice of ice cream cake or ice cream loaf, depends what you want to call it and for those that really like to indulge like myself serve with a generous scoop of ice cream on the side.
