Sharing a home offers a common sense answer to twin challenges facing all communities – finding or keeping a home. BIG Lottery funding has created the opportunity for Islanders to benefit from this simple approach, which has been up and running in other areas for many years. Here, Age UK Isle of Wight is the torchbearer. The charity’s HomeShare project provides a matchmaking service which brings together householders who have spare space and home seekers who are looking for fresh and flexible alternatives to costly rental or purchase. A simple exchange sits at the heart of HomeShare – housing for help. Householders with a spare room and shared facilities open these up for sharers who, in return, provide an agreed amount of assistance every week with routine household tasks (not personal care) and also contribute to living costs. Every home share is different – shaped to the specific needs and expectations of householder and sharer. HomeShare Co-ordinators help them both to negotiate the details of how they will live together, help one another and get along with one another. The Co-ordinators are also responsible for recruiting, thoroughly screening and carefully matching both householders and sharers, for everyone’s peace of mind.

Established schemes, elsewhere in the UK, Europe, and North America where Vermont’s homeshare has been running for 30 years – have proved that home sharing is a good fit for many circumstances. Householders, for instance, may be finding their homes are becoming oversized for their needs – families fly the nest, relationships may have broken down, or support from relatives isn’t an option. Chores may be difficult or simply leaving too little time for enjoyable activities. While downsizing could relieve the pressure, it may also mean departing loved homes and known communities. For home seekers, sharing can provide flexible, short or long-term time-out from rental or purchase. It creates an opportunity to consider options, save for more permanent solutions, wait for social housing to become available (sharing won’t affect ranking on the homefinder register), or even serve out a probationary period for employment before putting down roots. Beyond the obvious practical benefits, home sharing yields many unexpected gains - peace of mind, new friendships, enjoyable company, reduced concerns and the increased happiness that comes from sharing and helping one another out.

To see how it’s already working visit www.homeshareiow.org or catch up with the HomeShare Co-ordinators at various drop-in events over the summer (details on website), or call Age UK IW on 525282.

Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. Since the last issue we have had some wonderful weather and like many I have been enjoying the great outdoors. The Island looks beautiful bathed in sun and let’s hope these warm days continue. Picnic and barbecue season is officially here and I’ve been contacted about the amount of litter that has been left after such events. Please either take your rubbish home or find a bin of which there are many about. Nothing looks worse than a beauty spot or beach littered with left over food packets, drink cans, bottles and general waste. June is looking to be a busy month for events on the Island and you can plan how to spend your time by going to the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10, 11 and 12. If you want to promote your upcoming event please email us the information so we can share it in the next issue. I hope you all enjoy this issue and I look forward to catching up with you again next month. Best wishes

Try Something Different With Vectis Radio. Vectis Radio broadcasts to inform, entertain and inspire. Our vision is to involve as many people in the community as possible, boosting their confidence and communication abilities whilst entertaining our audience, and promoting many Island charities and local businesses. Vectis Radio is based in the heart of the community it serves - The Riverside Centre, Newport. Our volunteer presenters are all ordinary local people whose passion for radio brings the station alive. Vectis Radio is designed to be ‘Radio Therapy’ involving people all ages and abilities and giving them the chance to broadcast in their own style. Vectis Radio was founded by Ian Mac in January 2010. In 2012 we launched a teaching programme aimed at young people between the ages of 11 – 19 (up to 25 for those with additional needs), reshaping it in 2013 as ‘The 4Ps Project’ which covers the main four ingredients of radio - Presenting, Producing Podcasting and Promoting – whose major outcome is the enhancement of confidence and communication skills. In 2017 Vectis Radio became a Community Interest Company and the station began broadcasting on FM 104.6 on November 4th 2017. Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 Progress Crossing: I have had recent meetings with Highways regarding the progress of the proposed crossing at the bottom of Cedar Hill. Currently the issues being faced are the enormous costs that would be involved locating the crossing from the high pavement on Carisbrooke Road. In order to make this crossing user friendly for all a ramp would need to be built into the pavement. This in itself is not overly complicated, but the placement of the ramp anywhere along this stretch of road would be affected by the number of mains services located in this area. It would involve serious amounts of work from Gas, Electricity and Telecom and the figure is possibly running at over £100,000 just to relocate these services. There is a conundrum over the relocation of bus stops and lost parking, but these are issues that can be resolved more easily. We haven’t given up on this project by any means, but I’m afraid it’s back to the drawing board for now. Verges: I have had numerous complaints regarding the damage being done to verges by the large contractor vehicles, lorries and poor driving in our country lanes. I have witnessed myself areas where the surfaces of the banks have been stripped of grass, or damaged by large tyre marks. There can be no doubt that a lot of the equipment used is oversized for the area, but it seems that this is what contractors use now. However, I do feel that it is important that we protect these areas, particularly at this time of year when wild flowers will be setting their seeds and a lot of small mammals and reptiles are nesting in the hedgerows and wider verges. I would urge you, that if you are aware of such damage, you contact Island Roads with the details. If they don’t know they won’t be 6

able to do anything and the more people that complain the more seriously they will take it. Please also copy me in to any correspondence you have on this matter. I hope to be having a meeting shortly with the Highways department and the Cabinet Member for Transport to seek a better management solution for our hedges and verges and to find out how we can improve the welfare of wildlife, flora and fauna, in our verges. I am pleased to see that the old portacabins that formed the Children’s Centre on Clatterford Road behind the old school/ Archaeology Centre have been cleared away, they were such an eyesore. Plans have been submitted for redevelopment of this site which has passed from council ownership into private hands. The lane leading to the recreation ground and allotments is still in the ownership of the council and gives an easement to allow access to these as well as being used by the new owners. It has been proposed that Newport Parish Council should become known as Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council. This will be decided at the next AGM, which is just after this magazine has gone to press. I am hopeful and optimistic that this proposal will be accepted, and it pleases me that Carisbrooke will be acknowledged as an important village, especially as it has such ancient history and has played such role historically in the development and governance of the Newport area. It is one of the earliest settlements on the Isle of Wight and I hope, that if this is voted for, the new name will help to give Carisbrooke more of a sense of ‘self’.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07970009908 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans The Shaping Newport report is now available for everyone to see, on the Newport Parish Council and IW Council websites. If anyone would like me to forward them an electronic copy please let me know. The report is based on the input from over 2000 people giving over 15000 responses, so this is a significant and statistically robust piece of work. All the comments were distilled down to produce 3 themes and areas of work. DESTINATION: Building better, more useful and more constructive connections between the people who live and work in Newport and the decision-makers and serviceproviders who run the civic ‘machinery’ of the town. NAVIGATION: Making it easy to get into the town, and out again, to find a place to park and to safely cross the town on foot, or by bike; marking safe, appealing and coherent town routes for visitors to explore and linger over. ASSOCIATION: Rediscovering and celebrating Newport’s identity, in its built and natural heritage, in its social and cultural stories, taking pride in its pedigree and future potential as the Island’s capital; creating compelling and distinctive reasons to visit, invest, stay and return.

We have also set aside £10,000 to help fund some other actions from the report. It’s so important that we make quick progress on delivering on the ground changes to show our community that we are serious about improving our town. Newport Time Bank is still moving forward with some new team members, so I’ll keep you posted when it opens up for participation from residents. We are fortunate in Newport to have the island’s only Shop Mobility service, which is located by the Library and public toilets (now reopened). Here residents and visitors can hire a mobility scooter at very reasonable rates to still enjoy some independence and socialise. I have put together a plan for the Parish Council to help support this important service, as this charity is run by volunteers and offers such a valuable service. Please pop in and see what they have to offer.

At long last the traffic order prohibiting vehicles parking in St Thomas’ Square has been put in place, ensuring that we can once again enjoy this space without the danger of vehicles driving in and parked cars spoiling the ambience.
