Another month has flown by and here we are with the June issue. As I write this introduction the sun is shining and I really hope that June is the start of the summer season and we get to enjoy many more sunny days here on the Island.

text or call Island Magazines on 07880 587 931

I have already had my first picnic of the year at the beach, it was lovely and sunny one moment and the next it was raining, thankfully not heavy but I was in a difficult conundrum; do I pack up and run to the car as quickly as I could or do I ride it out and get wet. Well, I did the latter but after 20 minutes I gave up!

This months front cover is amazing and all thanks to local photographer Nick Edwards. You can read all about Nicks passion on page 9.

Save our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight We are hedgehog carers for the island and our work involves offering advice, support and information to the public and we also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. Hedgehogs are at threat of extinction with numbers declining rapidly so helping everyone be more aware is really important. If you want to encourage hedgehogs into your garden make sure you have small square entry points, always have water available and you can provide dog or cat biscuits too. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble. Place in a light coloured towel in a high sided box and call Jacquie or Zoe on 01983 613145 who will offer the advice you need. Some key things to be aware of. If a Hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest. If not, it probably needs checking over. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see many strimming injuries, always feel around before gardening. If there is obvious injury or you are just not sure always call us so we will take them in. We visit vets if need be and rehabilitate them often releasing them back to where they were found. We attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and our Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where we provide updates of the hedgehogs we have looked after. 4

Servicing, Replacements, Repairs and Maintenance

Winter is finally over and now is the time to think about your boiler and how efficiently it worked for you in keeping your home warm and with a constant supply of hot water during the colder months. Older boilers and those that aren’t serviced regularly can end up costing households more than necessary. Local business, Primo Technical Services Ltd have been in the industry for over 25 years and offer a range of services including all aspects of domestic gas services, safety checks and installations, power flushing, heating and ventilation, plumbing, unvented systems and electrical. They provide regular maintenance as well as emergency breakdowns and they always turn up when they say they will! They also believe it makes sense to ensure your boiler is working efficiently and all their new boiler installations come with a ten year warranty so that alone is something worth looking into to ensure you aren’t throwing money down the drain. They offer free quotations on all installations and alteration work. For more information, phone 520522 or 07795 363 534, email: primotechnical@gmail. com and see their main advert.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07970009908 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans I recently attended 3 briefings and workshops on the master planning for Newport Harbour, it’s so important to the town and the Island’s economic development that I wanted to ensure I was fully cognisant of potential schemes. I have to say, I was reassured that the important elements of the Harbour have been incorporated and overall, sensible and sensitive to the needs of the town. Public consultation of the ideas will happen this summer, prior to the “masterplan”.

Resident Parking Zone are making good progress with most of the surveys required now completed. The vast majority of streets have passed the threshold so far to enable the next stage, the resident ballot to be undertaken. Shaping Newport High Street “parklet” is moving forward and we are going to work 10

with a local Community Interest Company, Care In The Garden to design, make, install and plant. This is going to look great, a much welcomed green seating area on the car dominated High Street. Please take a moment to visit the exhibition at Independent Arts’ People’s, Pop-Up Gallery situated on 33 High Street, a most inspiring organisation that support people with anxiety, loneliness, dementia and other life restricting issues. The Parish Council, along with support from IW Council will be getting Independent Arts to work directly with our Newport community for the next 12 months, in the shape of a “Community Connector”. This will bridge the gap left by the Local Area Coordinators, until the new mental health services come in next year. I am most proud to have been unanimously supported by members of Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council to take up the position of Chairman of the Council. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Cllr Geoff Brodie who has just completed his 2 year tenure in the role, leading us into a new era for our parish, as we take on more services,

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans continued a larger team, new offices and of course Shaping Newport. I am looking forward to building on this legacy and working alongside Cllr Matthew Price who was also universally accepted as Vice Chairman. The new enamel town map will be installed very soon, just opposite the Guildhall and will include information on our new History Walks, which you can access via a smart phone app. The guided tour will bring alive Newport’s rich heritage. Canvas versions of the maps are now available for sale from 30 High Street or contact the Parish Office 559119. A4 Paper copies are available from the bus station and Visit IW visitor information centre at the Guildhall. Shaping Newport has started to work with a company who installs large screens that can show films, sporting events etc and one of the ideas is to televise the Rugby World Cup in the early Autumn. We’ll also get a rugby club involved to do some mini training sessions to introduce youngsters to the sport “Try It Out”. As soon as we have identified a suitable location we can move this ahead.

Monthly News Report from Cllr John Hobart. Member for Carisbrooke and Gunville E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 For some time now there have been requests for more children’s play areas in public spaces. This is something that we are looking at seriously and seeking venues where suitable play equipment can be hosted. Whilst we have not yet identified suitable places to site new equipment we are as a parish council undertaking repairs and replacement of apparatus on the sites that are already in place. While upgrading it, it is also our intention to add some adult outdoor gym equipment as this has proved popular where it is located in other areas. Hopefully as this is in discussion at the moment works will commence in the very near future.

I have been working with Island Roads, the Isle of Wight highways and residents in an endeavour to slow traffic at the Colemans Lane junction with Whitehouse Road and also to improve the visibility splay in that area. Unfortunately because accidents are not always recorded it is hard to provide enough data to evidence the need, although I believe the accident on Forest Road has been a wake-up call.

We are currently in the middle of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign supported by the CPRE (The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England). It is great to see the effort that is I was very sad indeed as I am sure we all being put in to clearing rubbish around our were about the fatality in the recent crash island and on our beaches, and we must be on Forest Road. Fancy something a little different? Why not try your local community radio station.

A Community Radio Station with a Difference

Vectis Radio broadcasting on FM 104.6 and online www.vectisradio.com/listen is a distinct and different community radio station based in Newport.

From their Riverside Centre studios they broadcast a wide range of music, chat and information aimed at the local community. The music mix includes many tunes that Vectis Radio on FM 104.6 aren’t played on mainstream radio stations. In particular the station plays local music and online at least once an hour during the day and www.vectisradio.com/listen welcomes local bands/musicians to submit their tracks for inclusion on the ever growing The station supports local businesses by providing affordable radio advertising to fit most budgets. The income from this helps to keep the station on air. Vectis Radio is run entirely by volunteers, every penny earned from advertising and fundraising is required just to keep it operating. Vectis Radio is also home to the award winning 4Ps Training Course which enables young people, many with additional needs, to improve confidence and communication by using the basic principles of radio. More details of this course can be found at www.4PS.org.uk. If you are interested in finding out more the station holds a regular open/coffee morning at it’s studios on the first Saturday of the month. 13
