elcome to the June issue and near enough the halfway point of the year... and what a year it’s been!
Do you feel life is slowly returning to normal with the easing of lockdown? Or are you finding it hard to remember exactly what ‘normal’ life was? There is no doubt that many things have changed in our lives over the last 15 months, some good and some bad. Many people have embraced the time by learning new skills and have seen life through different lenses but how many of these changes are we going to continue with when we completely move out of lockdown. Many of us our re-evaluating what is really important and what isn’t. Local elections are finally over and congratulations to all those that were elected and re-elected. Councillor Julie Jones-Evans is continuing with her monthly report and Councillor Joe Lever has kindly agreed to become a regular news contributor for Carisbrooke and Gunville area. We have some great local businesses advertising with us who will appreciate you using their services and please let them know you saw their advert here. The weather hasn’t been brilliant so far but let’s hope that is destined to change. Whether you are sitting indoors while it rains or sitting on the beach soaking up the sun you can enjoy our puzzle section on pages 14 and 15. I hope you have a great June and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

SCAM ALERTS! IW Trading Standards have a few scams for you to be wary of. • Reports of scam texts and emails purporting to be various mail providers, claiming that you need to pay extra for a package or asking you click on a link which could install malware onto your device – the companies all involved state that they would never contact you in this way (how would they know your phone number?) and would put a card through the door. • Reports that the National Insurance scam has been using an 01983 number – please don’t believe that just because it appears to be a local number that it is genuine, numbers can be purchased and are frequently cloned. • A message purporting to be from Google to say that your phone has viruses and you have to click the link to repair the problem – Don’t – this is a scam. • There appears to be an increase in reports of banking texts and some residents are reporting that these messages are being followed up by phone calls stating that there is a fraud on your account, they may even draw your attention to the number they are dialling from – it will be the banks number – again these can be cloned. Hang up do not engage with these criminals and call your bank on a number you have found yourself to ensure that your account is secure. • Lots of reports in the past few weeks about rogue traders. Whether they are looking to carry out work on your property or buy gold or jewellery from you our advice remains the same – Do Not trade on the doorstep you will be conned out of money and if they are carrying out work it is likely to be of poor quality and the price they quote at the beginning will escalate during the process. Remember • Scam texts can be forwarded to 7726 • Scam emails can be forwarded to report@ phishing.gov.uk • No cold calling stickers are available by emailing trading. standards@iow.gov.uk 5
The Friends of St Mary’s Need Your Help By Lesley Myland Here we are approaching a second summer of challenging circumstances but the Friends of St Mary’s continue to provide a retail service which the staff at the Trust clearly appreciate. They give us a great deal of support and encouragement which helps to keep us going. In spite of being in a rather reduced situation, we are carrying on and planning for opening up a little more widely as soon as we can. We have hopes of re-opening in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre and although it will not be for a while yet, we hope to resume our trolley service to the wards. We know how much this is missed and are working on an ordering service which we hope will bridge the gap in the meantime. The Charity will soon be preparing to ask hospital staff to consider how we can help them again in 2021 from the ‘Friends Fund`. We are pleased to say that we have many donations from patients who have been cared for at St Mary’s during the pandemic crisis and we have been greatly moved by that, but we do need to get fundraising again, particularly as we do not have the range of retail services that we did have supporting our funds. Recently we were overwhelmed by a gesture from a member of St Mary’s pathology staff, Jussna Mateen. She arranged for her colleagues to be able to take home curry dishes made by her family’s restaurant, Spice Central in Cowes. Proceeds from the event which amounted to well over £1,000 were donated to the Friends. The occasion marked the end of Ramadan which is regarded as a charitable month and we were honoured to be included in this way. A huge thank you to Jussna and her family who worked hard to make everything go so well and I can personally say that the food was fantastic!

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans I am delighted to repost my election results, being re-elected to both Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council and the Isle of Wight Council. Thank you to everyone who came out to vote and even if I wasn’t your choice, I will work , as ever, on behalf of all residents. We have some new faces at NCCC, welcoming Vix Lowthion joining me in Newport Central, Cara Lock in Parkhurst and Hunnyhill, Michael Smith in Fairlee and Whippingham, Bev Hastings in Carisbrooke and Gunville, Ray Redrup in Newport West. Lots of experience and different perspectives to help us work together for the good of Newport and Carisbrooke. We are having our first face to face meeting since March 2020 and all being well will continue to do so. The property purchase is moving to its next stage and hopefully soon we will have a stake in the High Street and have one of the currently empty premises vibrant once more. More news of new businesses moving into Newport is most welcome and I feel things are definitely moving in the right direction. The new toilets in Post Office Lane are proving popular and we are still ironing out a couple of issues, as with any new system. I’m receiving lots of compliments about them which outweigh the complaints so that’s not bad going. We always listen to feedback so please do let me or our clerk know 01983 559119 if you want to let us know about anything 8
to do with the new toilets. Please remember if you are disabled, you can purchase a radar key that will let you into the accessible toilet – you can get these from mobility shops and Boots. I was working with the late and so missed Brian Greening on a project for 2022 – Newport Year of the Child – as it will be 200 years since the death of Valentine Gray, the 10-year-old sweep whose body was found in The Tanty – somewhere near Pyle Street - there was a public outcry and led to reforms of child labour. We may not have child labour any longer, but we have high levels of child poverty in Newport, and I want to raise awareness of this and other issues, next year, to honour Valentine Gray.
Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council Chair’s Report 2019 - 2021 I am now drawing to the end of my second tenure as Chair of this Council and this report covers 2 years as we did not have an annual meeting in 2020 due to C - 19 restrictions. During this time we have moved to new offices, sadly leaving the Guildhall and changed our name to Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council to better reflect our role. Our team has grown and flourished, under the leadership of our new Clerk (started September 2019), delivering services and continued over the page
News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans projects. We are very proud of them and how they stepped up and adapted to the challenges of the pandemic. We were pleased to be the lead organisation for the High Street Heritage Action Zone application, (which I helped write) and delighted when our bid was accepted, creating £1.4m of investment from Laptops for Schools 2020 - 2024. This could not have happened at a better time given the departure of some big names from the High Street. The HSHAZ is a year old now and you can learn more about the project and progress here www.iwhaz.uk The handover of Vectis Field adjacent to Victoria Rec is due to be completed soon, giving us greater scope to improve public outdoor facilities. The Gunville Greenway (cycle track) will go through our land and will be installed this year. The Shaping Newport partnership is still going strong and has proven its worth, as it’s the perfect forum to discuss the regeneration of the town and response to Covid-19 recovery. Some future ideas: • More litter picks and working with Gift to Nature/Vectis Womble Association. • Tree planting and wildflowers. • ‘Jazzing up Newport! (painting St Mary’s and Coppins Bridge subways), working with Minster, Environment Officer and Island Roads. • More play equipment installed and improved surfacing. Develop further relationships with community groups. Community events. Bigger Christmas event with personalised community themed motifs. More festoons. More art installations.
We said farewell to some long-standing councillors this May and thank them for all their hard work over the years. I am looking forward to working with the returning and the new councillors, some of whom are taking up this role for the first time. It’s been an honour to lead NCCC and this would not have been possible without the support of my Vice Chair Matthew Price, Finance Lead Geoff Brodie and the committee chairs.
We have been involved in many other projects along the way and we aren’t stopping there as we have some great ideas for future projects to get working on. 9

News Report from Cllr Joe Lever - Carisbrooke & Gunville Mobile - 07736 663 657 | Email - joe.lever@iow.gov.uk Facebook - @CllrJoeLever | Instagram - @cllrjoelever Just wanted to start with a huge thank you for electing me as your County Councillor. I’m feeling very overwhelmed by the support I’ve received both before and after the election. This role is honestly a privilege. So, a quick bit about me. Originally from sunny Blackpool, my partner and I moved to the Island 7 years ago and haven’t looked back since. In that time, we’ve welcomed our daughter into the world, who’s favourite word is currently “no”! Personally, I love TV, film, football and running. Due to campaigning I’ve still not caught up with ‘Line of Duty’, so please no spoilers if you see me out and about! Professionally, I’ve been a digital designer for nearly a decade. In the community, I’ve been on Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council for 2 years already - representing neighbouring Newport West - and have also been a part of the Shaping Newport and High Street Heritage Action Zone projects. And now for some updates in our community: In your last update, John Hobart spoke about his support for ‘20’s plenty’ for many of our roads. I’ll be continuing this support and exploring many other avenues to make our roads safer for everyone. 12
Over the coming weeks, amongst many induction sessions I have with the council, I’ll be having conversations with planning officers about various applications due and in progress. The applications off Arthur Moody Drive, for instance, have been delayed going into the planning committee so I want to understand why and when that’s now due to happen. At the time of writing this, there’s some exciting new play equipment and resurfacing due to be installed at Victoria Rec play area; ready for the half term holidays! NCCC are also looking to put on regular (socially distanced) community litter picks, so I’ll hopefully be promoting some dates in the next update! If you have any specific areas in mind that you think we should focus on, please do get in touch. I’ll also be looking to get an update on progress with the Gunville Greenway cycle route. Plans have gone quiet in recent months so I’m keen to find out exactly where we are with this. Finally, I just wanted to say another big thank you. I have an ever growing to-dolist but I’m raring to go and can’t wait to see what we can achieve together!

WEIGH TO GO NEWPORT! Slimmers are making a ‘comeback’ as their Carisbrooke Slimming World groups reopen, with Consultant Kim Street saying she’s excited to be back helping members to lose weight in person. Slimming World has been supporting members virtually since January, when lockdown closed all of the real-life groups for the second time. Kim says: “Following the easing of restrictions I’m delighted to finally be back together with my members! I’m so proud of how my members have been there for each other through these difficult months and continued to lose weight however there’s nothing quite like the magic of our real-life groups.” The health and safety of members has been Kim’s top priority in planning the return: “A few things have changed to ensure that everyone stays safe. This includes appropriate social distancing, hygiene measures and shorter pre-booked session. What hasn’t changed is the gorgeous warm welcome and feeling of togetherness.
