Welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines. March signifies the start of Spring and lets hope we start seeing some better weather, perhaps even some sunshine! It looks set to be a busy month with plenty happening across the island and you can find details of events listed in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12, 13 and 14. On Sunday 11th March is Mothering Sunday and towards the end of the month on the 30th is the start of Easter. Unfortunately we lose an hour of well earned sleep in March as the clocks go forward the last Sunday of the month, this being the 25th but on the other hand we will start to see the lighter evenings which is always something to be cheerful about. Our front cover stars this month are Viola and Venus and you can read about them on page 5. This months issue is packed with local news and information and as usual we have some great advertising from local businesses. Please help them out by using their services and letting them know you saw them advertised here.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Newport Parish Council has set its budget for the year and there are many new projects and continued support for the community. One of my new projects is to create a seating area and planting on Hunnyhill, near the junction with Heytesbury Road. It’s important to have rest areas in town and especially on a hill! The plants will help to break up the large concrete area and provide some colour. The plans for the new junction at the top of Hunnyhill is causing some controversy as it will be encouraging more traffic to use Hunnyhill. Medina Way (dual carriageway) was built to take traffic away from Hunnyhill which is a densely populated area and I am fighting to have this junction halted. Many of us believe that it should be Riverway that should be done first in this series of road improvements. Riverway would improve traffic flow onto Coppins Bridge and also create a pedestrian crossing at the base of Hookes Way steps, a popular route into town and the IW College, which currently has no controlled crossing for pedestrians. Some great news about our public toilets, at last we have reached agreement with the IW Council about a long term lease for South Street toilets. We will need to do some works to the drainage system which is not fit for purpose and some remedial works to the interior. I thank McDonalds and the Library for being community toilets for the past few months while we have been negotiating with the Council. Post Office Lane improvements have been through the planning process and we will be able to begin getting quotes through for the work to be completed. This will be a big 4

investment for Newport and provide state of the art toilets, including a Changing Rooms facility for disabled users. We are finally making some progress with a Residents Parking scheme as the IW Council has launched a consultation as to what the policy should contain. They want to know how much you would be prepared to pay (if anything) and how many cars should be limited to have a permit per household. Several streets in Newport are in need of a resident’s zone, but it’s important to remember that it does not guarantee a parking space nor does it relieve overcrowding in the evenings and weekends. Have a look at the consultation, it only takes a few minutes www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/BVMG7FJ Over 2000 people have responded to the Shaping Newport survey and the report will be out in a few weeks. So far the messages coming out are that Newport is dominated by vehicles, it’s difficult to find your way around it, we need more events in the squares, more investment in public spaces, a return of civic pride, Newport is the County Town and should be presented as such. There are doubts that these improvements won’t happen, but I and others on the parish council and business association are absolutely determined to make them happen, which is why we invested into the project. As partners we can hold the IW Council to account and work together to improve our town.

Age UK Isle of Wight; Helping you stay safe and comfortable in your own home. The Age UK Isle of Wight Handyperson Service has been helping island residents to live independently in their own homes for more than 5 years. As of 31st March 2018 the Handyperson service is changing, and will no longer be commissioned by IW Council to provide free labour for small jobs. This loss of funding means that from 1st April, all handyperson services supplied by Age UK IW will be charged for, under their Home Safe Service. However, recognising the continued need for this vital service in our communities, the charity is committed to providing an outstanding service at a reasonable price. Our staff are employed by Age UK IW, they have a wealth of experience and knowledge, are reliable and trustworthy, and have full DBS checks and insurance. As well as the peace of mind you will get from using trusted tradespeople you’ll also be supporting a vital local charity. Any profits from the Home Safe Service go directly to helping provide Age UK Isle of Wight’s free charitable services.

Our Home Safe team can help you with:

• Advice on home safety adaptations • Fitting doorbells & external key safes • Installing grab rails & other adaptations, both internal & external • Installing smoke alarms & carbon monoxide detectors • Fitting locks & security chains • Fitting plug sockets & light fixtures (and other minor electrical jobs) • Power washing paths, patios & driveways • Moving & assembling furniture, flat-pack, etc • Building steps & ramps • Hanging shelving, picture frames, mirrors, blinds & curtain rails • Fence & gate repairs • Minor carpentry & plumbing work • Low-level guttering maintenance & clearing • General household repairs This list is by no means exhaustive and no job is too small, if it’s important to you, it’s important to us. We don’t charge for call-outs and offer a very competitive hourly rate, plus you can have any mix of jobs in one visit. The Home Safe Service is available to all adults over 18, living on the Isle of Wight.
