A very warm welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. It looks set to be a busy month, starting with Shrove Tuesday on the 5th and then Mother’s Day, and don’t forget the clocks go forward one hour on the last Sunday of the month. Although we lose a valuable hour in bed we will start seeing lighter evenings. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 8, 9 and 10 are packed full with events happening across the island during March. I always like to give a small mention about the weather but I’m really at a loss of what to say this time except did you enjoy the small scattering of snow we had a few weeks back and do you think we can expect to see more of it like we did in March last year or shall we keep our fingers crossed that the cold weather has been and gone.

A Journey of Discovery for Everyone by Nickie Short
YOGA a potential journey of discovery for everyone
My name is Nickie Short and I teach yoga on the Isle of Wight. I have lived on the Island for 16 years with my family and I love dog walking, swimming in the sea and sharing this wonderful part of the world with my husband and friends. Since leaving school I have spent 30 plus years working with people with a wide range of physical and mental health problems, learning difficulties, physical disabilities and those who are generally finding life challenging. I have been practising yoga for 30 years and teaching for almost 20. When working with groups or individuals I take time to determine where they are now, where they want to be and how helping them work through the challenges from A to B. Although everyone is different there are many common themes: people lack awareness of their physical needs, lack self confidence, want to find some ‘peace’ or contentment, want to feel less stressed, get anxious, experience pain (physical and emotional) and lack of sleep to varying degrees. I currently run teacher training courses for yoga teachers, hold regular retreats, run weekly general classes on the Island, carry out regular one2one appointments and teach yoga for recovery for individuals and organisations.
WEEKLY CLASSES IN RYDE, VENTNOR & NEWPORT General classes, back care, support for anyone affected by cancer, relaxation and breathing for stress and anxiety, working with the energy centres.
PRIVATE INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS Call to explore how an individual programme could help you meet your health and life aims for 2019. Special offers available throughout January on one2one sessions
YOGA RETREAT Out with the Old - In with the New - 29th to 31st March - Nettlecombe Farm, IOW, weekend of yoga and meditation removing stale winter energy and discovering refreshing practices for the spring, prices from £200 pp For more information contact Nickie Short on 07799 032824 www.yogaisleofwight.co.uk

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 This month I am updating on the environmental and heritage aspects of my role as I feel that things are evolving well from the outcomes of the Environmental Conference last summer. There was great evidence of the enthusiasm within the community for environmental protection with many comments and ideas being submitted by the table groups and attendees, all have which have now been individually discussed and prioritised by their achievability. With that in mind, and working within the limited budget available, we have created an action plan to enable us to move things forward.
decline in insect life and pollinators in general‌.so vital to the future of the planet!!) We are also working with Visit Isle of Wight and Natural Enterprise to help evolve a plan for sustainable tourism and rural enterprise. This is just a brief overview of a far more in depth review that has been taking place. Small steps can imbed good habits for life and I believe if we are all mindful of our environment we can make a difference together.
My other hat covers Heritage and it may be of interest to some of you to be updated One of the key things the IW Council will about the future of our Heritage collections be taking forward is a programme of policy and more particularly our records office, development, aiming to tackle two things which sadly failed its National Archives per year starting in 2019 with a green travel review again, as not fit for purpose. We plan for the council and a plastic free policy. are very anxious to retain our Isle of Wight History on the Island and have been working We will also be endeavouring to make a towards a re-homing exercise, possibly at the significant difference by putting in place old Westridge Leisure Centre site in Ryde. A correct planning policy, making sure our feasibility study has been commissioned for regeneration programme incorporates this project and we are looking forward to environmental issues and spending hearing the outcomes. The current archive, encourages better environmental standards and the need to move it has been ongoing and supports local business. for many years, we are determined that it will have a secure future and have a vision of The projects included in the Action Plan the centre becoming, not just a storage area include the proposed take up of electric but, a proper Isle of Wight Heritage Centre/ vehicles, investigating future low carbon Museum. News Report from John Hobart continued Hills area of Gunville. I have yet again entered discussions with Island Roads and our new Director for Neighbourhoods requesting that this matter is investigated urgently. Unfortunately the fields in the surrounding area were deluged and it is possible that the field ditches simply could not cope with the quantity of water. I believe it is possible that farmers may need to reconsider their boundary management as these extreme weather conditions need more than just a ditch to take the water away. We are missing so many hedges, removed with advent of larger machinery in the 60s and 70s and so there are no longer natural breaks in the fields.

Tel 521068 or 07970009908 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Newport Heritage Events and activities The history walks organised by Shaping Newport have been a real success with more to be planned. Led by Richard Smout the IW Council’s heritage officer, the walks have revealed the hidden history that is right in front of us. The stories of the people that lived in the buildings and the changes that have happened in Newport, even within living memory. It was good to have the interaction with people on the walk that added more information that wasn’t know or had just been forgotten. The History Walks generally last 1.5 hours and are focused on the central area off the High Street. Please keep an eye on Shaping Newport Facebook page for the dates. Heritage is something that interests many people and Newport has such a wealth of history that Shaping Newport is going to create a Newport Heritage Day for the calendar. If the first one goes well it is hoped it will become an annual event. It’s been difficult to choose a date that doesn’t clash with other events across the island and isn’t too out of season. We are looking at Saturday 12th October (which is the same weekend as Beer and Buses when lots of visitors will be coming into town anyway). If you have any other suggestions or would like to get involved please let me or Claire Kennard (30 High Street) know. 14
Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council are holding a Contractors open day on 25th March 3.00-6.00pm at Victoria Recreation Ground Pavilion. We have quite a few assets now and we want to use as many local trades people as possible in helping to maintain them. Just drop in and have a chat to us about what kind of projects we have coming up and regular work that needs doing. We want to create a network of reliable and quality trades that we can call upon. If you can’t make it please ring 559119 and find out about getting on our list. We are collating a diary of events for Newport, which is quite a task as when you start and the plan is to have an online diary and a place where organisations can post their events too. People often ask me about spaces that they can hire to put on classes and events. 2 places that are not very well known are the Unitarian Church Hall on the High Street (opposite County Hall) and Newport Methodist Church on Quay Street. They both are centrally located, have good facilities and are very reasonably priced, from £10 per hour. So if you have an idea for an event or class, there is plenty of choice for venues in Newport. Shaping Newport has recruited a volunteer that is helping people to put on events in continued over the page
News Report by Julie Jones-Evans continued town, showing how it is done and making the process much easier. If you want to put an event on in St Thomas’ Square for example, just pop into 30 High Street or contact me to get someone to run your ideas by. On St Georges Day April 23rd in St Thomas’s Square we are having an event to showcase all of the opportunities for young people to get involved with “Something To Do”. It’s going to be quite exciting and I think people will be surprised by the sheer amount of things that are available. If you run an event/ class/programme for young people do get in touch with myself or Claire at 30 High Street. Win our Window The big shop windows at 30 High Street, Newport could soon be a showcase for your business or project. Shaping Newport has teamed up with Vectis Radio to offer a chance for local communities, organisations, businesses, causes or projects to win a month of free publicity in the heart of the Island’s county town. The project will consider any display that promotes community, heritage or business in Newport. Any organisation or individual from any town may apply, but Newportbased community groups are strongly encouraged. The Shaping Newport Steering Group votes on the winning display. Criteria they will
be looking for include: • • •
Original and visually striking displays Promoting ideas that build and support the community Promoting a sense of pride and belonging in Newport
The display would have to fit the window and be easily assembled and disassembled in a couple of hours by the winner. There is one window available, and the space is approximately 220cm wide x 80cm deep, and 180cm high. You should come and look at the window to make sure your display will fit. Your display needs to be safe and secure, as visitors and the public will be in the shop nearby. There is lighting in the shop but no electric power available for the display. If you are interested in entering, submit your expression of interest to regeneration@iow. gov.uk with a description of your idea in no more than 200 words, or contact us via the Shaping Newport Facebook page. As always feel free to get in touch if you feel I can assist you with any council related matter.
