Welcome to the May issue and thank you for picking up a copy. May is set to be a busy month, what with the two Bank Holidays and lots happening across the Island. You can find details of these events on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10 and 11. We must now keep our fingers crossed for some good weather.

This month we have teamed up with Isle of Wight Cats Protection to find some forever homes for their Senior Kitizens. These mature cats are still so loving and wonderful companions and we had the hard task of choosing just five of them to be the stars of our feature, which you can read on page 8.

This months front cover certainly made a splash and you can read about the photographer on page 15. On page 4 you will find an interesting question and answer article on waste and recycling. As usual this month is packed with news and information and is supported by some great advertisers.

Questions and Answers regarding your green/brown lid garden waste bins and other bits. Q - Can you tell me how the money is collected for the garden waste scheme? A - Subscriptions can be made online at www.iwight.com/waste click on the garden waste web page for the link to ‘do it on line’ or call 823777 for the councils waste service direct line at the contact centre
Q - How often does it gets emptied? A - Fortnightly Q - What can go in it? A - Green garden waste – no soil or rubble – branches up to 20cm think
Q - What do people do if they decide after a year or two NOT to continue?
Q - WHAT will be the changes when the Forest Road site opens?
A- Subscriptions have to be renewed each period, if they are not we will come and collect the bin.
A - Changes will be to the treatment process not to the collection service. Fleet will operate out of Forest Park. Recycling will be sorted, graded and baled for the market here rather than in Cambridgeshire. Black Bag Waste will no longer go to landfill instead it will be sorted to pull out the dirty recyclates and the remainder will be shredded for fuel.
Q - What will happen to this type of waste? A - It goes to the Biffa Windrow Composting at Standen Heath (next to Lynnbottom) where it is composted – I believe they use Wight Reclamation as their operator and the compost can be bought through them. Q - Can you clarify what the cost is for the Green/brown lid garden waste bins:
Q - Where do I put my dog poo or cat litter? A - In black bag.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Shaping Newport final report will be out later this month and plans for delivering the recommendations are underway. One of these was to create a post for a Town Centre manager, a role that would involve working with businesses, the parish council and others to put on events, improve public realm and coordinate projects. This will be an invaluable post that will improve the vibrancy of Newport. Progress is being made to bring a car boot sale to Newport Harbour on Sunday afternoons. This will be on the eastern side of the Harbour with pedestrian access from Seaclose or Sea Street. It is hoped that this will prove as popular at the previous car boot sale at the football ground and create funds to put on events in town and support Newport Carnival. There is a great group of volunteers prepared to give up their time for the community, so I hope we can support the car boot sale which should be starting this month. Shaping Newport has recommended that a users guide to Newport be created that will outline all the steps and contacts to put on an event in the town. Hopefully this will simplify the process and allow people to be fully prepared and informed, avoiding frustration and disappointment. An Events Guide will also be produced giving a comprehensive calendar of what’s going on in Newport. Plans are underway for an event in Nodehill on the Queen’s Birthday, 9th June. I’ll update you with more details next month. The pedestrian audit of the town centre and Newport cycling permeability study will form part of a larger piece of work to 6
produce a walking and cycling plan for Newport, which will enable us to attract funding for the much needed improvements. The time has come to redress the balance from the car to the pedestrian and cyclist, for a more pleasant environment. I am also expecting a more detailed report very soon looking at specific improvements, such as creating a proposed “People First” zone. This is not necessarily a pedestrian zone, but an area where it is clearly implied that pedestrians have priority over vehicles, which should reduce the amount of vehicles wanting to travel that way if an alternative is available. The report will also identify specific streets where pavements need to be widened and create a plan of public seating. Ideally seating should be available every 100m in a town centre. Seats and benches can also incorporate plants and information such as direction and history, to give a multi benefit to the installation. Much needed maintenance has been carried out on the South Street toilets and they will be open for the season. As ever please get in contact with me if you have any questions or issues I can assist with. My Saturday morning surgery is currently suspended due to my work commitments, but I can make other arrangements to meet with residents.

Senior Kitizens
Island Magazines has got together with the Isle of Wight Cats Protection Adoption Centre to let you know about some of the wonderful senior kitizens who are waiting for their forever home. You will definitely fall in love with these older cats and please don’t let their age put you off. Cats regularly live into their late teens or older these days, so most seniors will have many years of love to give. Older cats are usually more homely and have great personalities making them wonderful companions. Will is a very handsome 8 year old short haired black and white cat. He can be both chilled out and playful and likes to chase string and play with toys and other times like to be quiet and by himself. He doesn’t want to live with other animals and definitely likes the outdoors. Dizzy is a sweet natured independent mature lady. She doesn’t ask for much - a warm bed, yummy food and fuss. She is a 13 year old Tabby who doesn’t want to live with other cats and although a little older she is still young at heart. Dizzy cannot be rehomed to some areas of Ryde or Yarmouth. Maisy is a black and white 14 year old who really just wants her own comfy space in a quiet loving home. She can be very affectionate and loves a gentle stroke now and then. She doesn’t demand much attention but she’ll quite happily come to you when you approach and will purr away. Maisy seems very content to just chill out, so she could possibly be an indoor cat.
8
Suki loves the company of humans but not other animals. She enjoys being made a fuss of and will happily rub around you but she is not a hugger. Suki is Tabby and white and is a young 10 year old. Her dream home is a nice quite place to relax with a garden to nose around and a comfy armchair for naps. Suki cannot be rehomed in Ryde. Dora is a stunning 16 year old tortoiseshell and white cat. Dora’s owner went in to care, and she misses having a soulmate around. Dora likes pottering about in the garden. She isn’t the world’s biggest lap fan, but will happily follow you about. She has lived with a doggy before so may be ok to do so again.
FOSTER CARERS NEEDED
Do you have a spare room and time to make a difference? Cats Protection is in need of fosterers who can devote some time and love to socialise kittens or care for a cat not ready for adoption. You supply the love and CP will supply the rest and pay for all medical costs. If you are unable to commit to having a cat full time this could be for you? All support and training given (online training) Please call CP if you think you can help.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 I was saddened to hear this week that the Carisbrooke Society has decided to disband. For many years an enthusiastic group of local residents have been involved in maintaining the planters around the village as well as, in past years, organising the Carisbrooke Show and many interesting talks in the village hall. Unfortunately, the group have found it hard to encourage younger members to join them and so, like many such organisations, it is not viable to continue. It would be my hope that we could resurrect this, but obviously this would be dependent on active and enthusiastic locals coming forward. I plan to have a discussion with the Chairman to see if there is a way forward to enable us to keep this Society active. I very much enjoyed the gathering on the Simeon Green to plant poppy seeds under the supervision of Ray Harrington-Vail of the Footprint Trust. The idea behind this is, of course, to create a living memorial to those who died in WW1. And on a similar note I am pleased to say that the wreath laying to commemorate the Battle of Moreuil Wood, at Carisbrooke Castle, was also both successful (as the rain held off) and moving as Richard Smout provided us with a short and appropriate service. In my role as Cabinet member for Environment and Heritage I was invited to the University of Southampton National Oceanography Centre, based in Southampton Docks. This was attended by Commonwealth representatives from as far afield as Tanzania, South Africa, the Caribbean and Canada. It was called the Commonwealth Marine Science Event and hosted by the Minister Terese Coffey from DEFRA. It focussed very heavily on ways that we can all work together to look after the health of our oceans‌.very appropriate to our local drive against plastics 12
and other serious pollutants. It was very enlightening and quite terrifying to see how much damage has been done, and is still being done, worldwide. It made it very clear that this country, above all, with its world-wide influence through our commonwealth, is in a position to influence the future of the marine environment which makes up 75% of the planet. As one who is not exactly a techy, one highlight of the day for me was a video conference with the National Oceanography Centre’s research vessel, James Cook, which was heaving in a force 8 gale off the coast of Namibia. I have to take my hat off to the those on board, some 30 researchers (scientists and technicians) who not only are doing amazing work but braving sea sickness as well for many weeks on end. Recently I spoke with the highways team, yet again, regarding the progress of the pedestrian crossing on Carisbrooke Road. I am assured that it is still ongoing, but told that there are some engineering and safety issues which will need to be ironed before it can be put in place. As with all such things the process is long, but still moving forward slowly. The Coastal Path is looming nearer and I, along with NPC and others are pushing hard for the stretch between East Cowes and the Folly Inn to be included in the path in order to ensure that Newport is included and the route will enable people to walk from East to West Cowes along the riverside. Finally, as much of Carisbrooke and Bowcombe are in the AONB, it might interest you to look at the draft AONB Management plan, which is open for consultation until 29th June 2018. You can access this at www.wightaonb.org. uk/about-us/partnership. Your comments will be welcomed as there will always be gaps to fill and consultation is the way to achieve this.

Swan Lake or Swan Splash!!! I think you will agree with me that this months front cover is stunning and we are very lucky to have so many talented local photographers on the Island. This beautiful swan certainly made a splash and professional photographer Sienna Anderson was lucky enough to be there at the right time and place to capture the moment. Sienna has lived on the Island for 42 years and is still amazed daily at the wonderful flora and fauna that surrounds us. She is always up for a photographic challenge and is at her happiest when she is on the water, capturing sunsets/sunrises and nature. Sienna is a full time photographer and owns her own photography business called Soul Photography, but she also does freelance and runs workshops and courses with Steve at Island Photo Centre. If you are inspired by the wonderful photography on Siennas website www. soulphotographyiow.com and would like to try for yourself and join one of the workshops or courses then please get in touch with Sienna via her workshop website www.captureperfect. co.uk and who knows you might take to it like a swan to water, and could soon be featuring on the front cover of Island Magazines.
