A couple of warnings from Trading Standards. • The scammers are still trying to use Covid to their advantage and try to trick us into parting with money – A couple of texts have been reported, one stating that your Covid Pass is available and tells you to click a link to apply. You can obtain your Covid Pass through the NHS App or by calling 119. The other states that you have been in contact with someone who has Covid and you need to buy a test followed by a link, allegedly to the NHS. There is no longer a test and trace process – nobody would know if you had covid or had been in contact with somebody who did. These are SCAMS they can be forwarded to 7726 where the information will be gathered as intelligence into scams. • Another reminder about calls from domestic insurance providers. These are prolific and persistent – do not engage with them and don’t agree to take any insurance. These insurances generally aren’t worth the paper they’re written on and once you have signed up they will keep ringing. These cover items such as white goods, tv’s, Sky and drainage and all operate in the same way. We recently heard of a victim who had over 40 direct debits on his account to these insurances! • We have been contacted by a resident who had a couple of men at his door this week asking to buy his motor home – which they said they believed was for sale. These weren’t islanders and were travelling around in a white pick up. Their approach would be to try to negotiate a silly price or pay a deposit and drive the motor home away and you would never see it or the money again. DO NOT engage with anyone on the doorstep. 2

Welcome to the May issue of Island Magazines. Another month has rolled by, and we have had some lovely sunny days, especially over the Easter weekend. There were many visitors to the Island who had the pleasure of experiencing what we have right on our doorstep. Do you sometimes forget how lucky we are to live here? I know I do... I hope you enjoy this month’s issue which is packed with news and information along with some regular features and of course the puzzle section on pages 10 and 11 which I understand have become very popular.

Tramp in the Woods Living on an island we are spoiled for choice with local wildlife, and nothing beats the sighting of a red squirrel and it’s thanks to local photographer Tramp Woods that I can have the pleasure of sharing this one on the front cover. Dave Krowson AKA The Tramp (Tramp Woods) moved to the island after a sudden change in his life and after spending many hours sitting in the woods waiting for the opportunity to capture these beauties his friend nicknamed him Tramp in the Woods. The name stuck and has now been adapted into an online trademark through Instagram and Facebook. Tramps favourite subject is the red squirrel and over the past 2 years he has been photographing all species of wildlife and is in the process of finishing his book, ‘Life Thru the Lens’, which will showcase an array of pictures taken by himself and he hopes that the book will be enjoyed by all ages and may encourage others to get involved with our wildlife in whatever form they feel.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans I think we are all grateful for the recent good weather and it’s a pleasure to be able to enjoy the outdoors a bit more. The markets can go ahead with a bit more certainty of more people spending longer in town enjoying the flower displays and the opportunity to sample alfresco dining. Everything seems more positive after all we have been through the past 2 years. We will all be hoping for sunshine over the Jubilee weekend 2nd – 5th June. The big day for Newport is Saturday 4th and the town will be having a party! St James’ Square will be closed to traffic and full of performers and entertainment. St Thomas’ Square will have a special Jubilee market with stalls and food and drink. Buskers will be performing in other areas of the town. At 3pm the Grand Jubilee Parade will begin to process along Carisbrooke Road, the Mall, High Street ending up at Quay Street. The theme is celebrating the 7 decades of the Queen’s reign and there will be dancers, music, scooters, motorbikes, and other historic vehicles. Walking participants are welcome too, so any group or even families can dress up and get involved. We are also looking for volunteers on the day to help please. Newport’s High Street Heritage Action Zone has just completed 2 years with 2 more years to go and we’ve just completed 2 important pieces of work. Firstly, the Design Guide which has been jointly produced with the Ryde HSHAZ is now published and available to view here - https:// iwdesignguide.uk/ There has also been some hard copies printed for distribution to various professionals working in this field. The guide is a result of many months of public consultation and working with design consultants. The IW Planning team are already using it and the guide will be adopted soon as a Supplementary Planning Document, which will give it weight when any shop front planning applications come in. The guide is very user friendly, so anyone can easily understand how they could make good decisions if they want to alter their building in the town centre. News Report from Cllr Joe Lever - Carisbrooke & Gunville Mobile - 07736 663 657 Email - joe.lever@iow.gov.uk Facebook - @CllrJoeLever Hello, Time for a May update… The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations are coming together, ready for the day of celebration on Saturday 4th June. Work is underway for the Parade which is due to start at 3pm from Victoria Rec. The route will go down The Mall, through Newport High Street, and continue down Quay Street onto the Quay. There will be stalls and a stage with entertainment in St Thomas Square, and lots of other bits going on throughout the day. The Tour of Britain is coming to town! We’ve known for a while now that the much-anticipated event in the international cycling calendar is finishing on the Island, we just haven’t known the exact route; until now! The route has been confirmed and come September, we’ll see elite cyclists from all around the world making their way through Gunville and Carisbrooke as part of the Island-wide route. This is a great way to showcase the Island, as the event will be televised to a worldwide audience. It’s also a truly great opportunity for residents to see elite athletes, competing at the highest level, almost from their doorsteps. Here’s hoping we get the weather! Thanks to the Women’s Institute, last month we had a visit from national treasure, Alan Titchmarsh, who planted a ceremonial crab apple tree near the north-west entrance of Victoria Rec, to celebrate the centenary of the Isle of Wight federation of the WI. There was tea and 12

cakes at the Pavilion afterward and the event appeared to be very well received. There will be three more family-sized benches being installed at Victoria Rec shortly. Two to go in the ever-busy play park - so even more families can relax whilst little ones play - and one bench along the cricket pitch boundary, under the shade of the trees, toward the main Rec entrance. Victoria Rec continues to grow as a hive of community activity - particularly in the summer months - and with the adjoining Vectis Field now under Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council management, we hope to offer even more for residents. To tie in with plans, the Pavilion front will be receiving some much-needed TLC in the form of repairs, a new paint job and some new doors. In addition, I’d love to hear ideas from residents about what community activities/events you’d like to see down at the Pavilion/Victoria Rec. So, if you’ve got some ideas, please do get in touch and we’ll consider them in the ongoing planning. As always, if you need to get in touch, please use the contact details at the top of this page.

Interesting Facts and Historical Events for May The name May is the modern-day English adaption of the Latin word Maius, which has origins going back to the time of the ancient Greeks. They named the month of May (or Maius) after the Greek goddess of growth. May used to have a very different name in Old English. Back then, the month was referred to as the “month of three milkings.” Unsurprisingly, this meant that during this month, you could milk your cows up to three times per day! May was once considered an incredibly ill-omened time to get married. There’s an adage for it actually, which goes: “Marry in May and you’ll rue the day.” It’s not clear where exactly the saying comes from, but there must have been a pretty good reason not to get married in one of the most beautiful months of the year! May isn’t just a bad time to get married, though. There’s one superstition that says that buying a new broom in May is unlucky. Oh, and apparently, you shouldn’t wash any blankets either! May is a pretty good month for US presidents. Every other month of the year, at least one US president has died, but never in May! May is the month that the Eurovision song contest is held every year and has been held every year since 1956 (with the exception of 2020). May is a special time for Star Wars fans worldwide. May the 4th is celebrated as Star Wars day, due to the way the date sounds similar to “May the Force be with you”. The Empire State Building formally opened its doors on May 1, 1931. At the point of its construction, it held the record for being the tallest building in the world. Many other sky-high constructions have since dwarfed it. Back in the day, it wasn’t a good May if you didn’t celebrate it with a maypole. In the UK, they were present since at least 1350 AD. Celebrants would erect a long pole and attach flowers, garlands, and strips of fabric to it, around which certain dances would take place. The birthstone for May is the emerald symbolising fertility and rebirth and May has two birth flowers – the Lily-of-the-Valley and the Hawthorn. The Hawthorn flower is a symbol of hope, while the Lily-of-the-Valley represents the return of happiness and sweetness. May also has two Zodiac signs, Taurus and Gemini. People born under the sign of Taurus are said to be ambitious and smart, yet trustworthy. Those born under the sign of Gemini are said to be passionate, adaptable, and smart. Many famous people were born in May, such as Queen Victoria, and Catherine the Great, Mark Zuckerberg, Karl Marx, Clint Eastwood, Wes Anderson and John F. Kennedy, Source: thefactsite.com

News report from Cllr Andrew Garratt for Parkhurst & Hunnyhill Email: andrew.garratt@iow.gov.uk - Tel: 01983 524623 A special meeting of the Isle of Wight Council should have taken place by now to consider the revised draft Island Planning Strategy. This process has, however, now been paused.

one pictured. In early April, I walked all roads on the estates with a council officer to identify and map what needs work.

In last month’s report I mentioned the consultation on designs for a new mural for the underpass under the dual carriageway. A group came together in late March to judge the designs. There were so many great ideas that we decided not to pick one individual design. Because of this and other factors in how the designs can be implemented, it will take some time before Although a lower number, the revised plan work can begin. still allocates land for 1,025 houses. In A while ago I reported that the council was discussions with the cabinet member for due to carry out a survey of the pedestrian housing, Cllr Paul Fuller, and planning officers I have pressed for a bigger reduction crossing point by the mini-roundabout near in the proposed number. I’ve also put the Lidl. I am keeping up the pressure on the council to get this done. It’s a necessary first case for the whole area to come under an overarching planning masterplan, including step towards working out what could be land for a health hub at St Mary’s hospital. done to make it easier and safer to cross. I believe this is sensible. The original version had 1,440 houses allocated in the north of Parkhurst & Hunnyhill ward with development potentially allowed right up to the edge of Parkhurst Forest. The revised version draws the line away from the forest but would still include a number of fields.

I’ve had very positive feedback from prison estate residents now that many of the new streetlights have been installed on roads previously owned by the Ministry of Justice. For the roads owned by householders, a few permissions are still needed before lights can go in. The council is working hard to get those. As part of the improvements, work will be done to remove and, where appropriate, replace worn-out ‘street furniture’, mostly road signs such as the 14

News report from Cllr Andrew Garratt for Parkhurst & Hunnyhill have expressed concerns to me about speed is Horsebridge Hill. In 2010, the council considered reducing the limit to 30mph but decided against doing so. I am keen to hear the views of residents who live on this road, or use it regularly, if they feel now is the time to bring a reduced limit. Local roads will, however, have some welcome fast-moving traffic on 11 September this year when cyclists complete the last stage of the Tour of Britain here on the Isle of Wight. The route will see them whizzing along Cowes Road, Parkhurst Road, and Forest Road. Finally, as ever, please get in touch if there is an issue that affects you – however ‘big’ or ‘small’. Among the many other issues I’ve taken up this month have been flytipping on prison land near Sherwood Road, water leaking out of Hampshire Crescent, and dog-fouling in Hookes Way.
