Diary of a Yoga Journey Part two Yoga has slotted very easily into my life and can be fitted in around my daily routine and work life. I don’t see it as a chore and I don’t need specialist equipment or need to go to a gym or anywhere specific to practice it. The benefits I’m seeing at this early stage are all the motivation I need.

Kirsty - Senior Stylist

Style in the comfort of your own home. Fully qualified. Over 25 years experience in all areas of hairdressing. For all enquiries please call 01983 539975 or 07773 571187

Obviously I knew the importance of breathing before, but now I understand it to a much deeper level and how I can control it and use it for a better quality of life. My teacher, Nickie Short is amazing at what she does and she listens to me about problem areas in my life and can see the changes I need to make to move forward so I can be in a better position physically and mentally. I have spoken to her about my asthma which at this time of year is not being as controlled as much as I would like, so she incorporated movements to improve lung capacity and to help me synchronise movement with breath. From previous lessons I have also used the breath awareness techniques to assist when I’m wheezy and have to use my inhaler more than normal. Nickie has taught me a variety of techniques which leave me feeling energised and I can feel my body waking up. The stretches are all working to improve mobility, release tension and bring awareness, whether it’s a pelvic tilt, shoulder rolls, the stepped breath (viloma), Kati Chakrasana or Tadasana, the palm tree pose they are all playing a vital role in my well being and self awareness. Nickie has classes happening in different areas across the island and can also offer lessons on a one to one basis. If you are interested in attending a class or discussing further call Nickie Short on 07799 032824 or visit her website www. yogaisleofwight.co.uk

'Have yourself a very silly Christmas...' 'A Sort of Christmas Carol'. Is it a panto? Is it a play? Is it a cheesy Christmas musical? Well, yes ...! Charles Dickens’ best loved story is going well – until he turns up and introduces more of his characters. It all gets quickly out of hand, as Fagin, Mrs Gamp, Nancy and Bill Sykes, Mr Sleary and Miss Havisham join the Cratchits, the Ghosts, and Scrooge on stage.

November 5th is Guy Fawkes and although watching the fireworks is great fun please remember that animals aren’t keen on them. If you are holding your own event please let your neighbours know in advance so they can take the appropriate action of keeping any family pets indoors. For an amazing time without the hassle have fun at one of the many organised events happening across the island. You will find all the information on our ‘dates for your diary’ section on pages 10 and 11 which is filled with an assortment of events including Christmas fayres and winter carnivals. Lots has been happening at the Friends of St Mary’s as nearly all the equipment we granted funds for last year has been delivered.

These items include: An Accuvein vein mapper which is a portable piece of equipment designed to find elusive veins without distress to the patient by holding the equipment above the skin. This is particularly useful for patients with conditions involving communication difficulties, which make them anxious during medical procedures.

Sunshine Radio has been able to replace an outdated studio. The station broadcasts daily and handles many patient requests – a service which can be a great morale boost to patients and their relatives. A tonometer has been purchased for the eye department. This makes the measuring of pressure in the eyes much less uncomfortable and stressful for patients. The Friends have been delighted to support Care in the Garden, and this has been done by funding the purchase of 15 attractive planters from them to place around hospital grounds. And last but not least for now, the Friends have funded four more vacuum mattresses for the Ambulance service. They are comfortable, warm and adaptable and provide a secure means of extraction for immobilised patients.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07970009908 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council held a well attended and successful resident’s event where we outlined plans for improving facilities and services for the area. There was a lot of interest in the People First Zone presentation which was a comprehensive plan of how to make the town centre a better environment for pedestrians and cyclists. Of course being funded by local residents it was important to show where the public money is being spent and also put the amount of money paid (the precept) into perspective, by showing what other areas of the island pay. This is the table for what band D properties currently pay. • • • • • • • • •

£24 per year £93 per year £66 per year £62 per year £60 per year £53 per year £46 per year £37 per year £31 per year

We are 18th highest out of 33 town and parish councils. Even by doubling the precept next year to invest in the parish, we will still be one of the lowest of the island and continue to offer good value for money for residents. The new town map is getting closer to finally being installed near the Guildhall, the design is a hand drawn map of the central area, you can recognise individual building and this is the first in a series of maps that will be a legacy for the whole parish for years to come. We are very fortunate to have local artist, Alan Rowe in our midst who is just brilliant at these maps. AJ Wells are constructing the map in enamel, which looks just great and will last for many, many years. Copies of the map will be available to buy in the Guildhall Visitors Centre soon, to assist people to navigate

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 I recently had the pleasure of attending the presentations for the Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge at Newport Library. It was great to meet children who had participated in this, and their Parents of course. The prizes were presented by Lora Peacy Wilcox, Chairman of the Council. The number of children completing the challenge was 1477, with an amazing 30,080 children’s books being borrowed over the summer holidays. Many children reading many more than the 6 books required by the challenge. I’m amazed during the very hot summer that there was such an uptake in the challenge. Very well done to all who got involved.

The Harbour has become a little tired as the type of shipping, such as small barges, that used to use the harbour no longer come as freight travels in so many different ways now (ie containerised). It is our aim to keep the harbour alive by meeting the needs of modern users.

Wearing my Heritage hat I will be shortly attending a workshop run by Historic England, a part of English Heritage, to learn more about the history and importance I have recently had communication from our of Norris Castle and farm with associated Rights of Way team to inform me that they landscape. These grade 1 listed buildings are awaiting a start date from Island Roads (built in the late 1790s by James Wyatt to continue the upgrading of the connecting gardens and parkland designed by Humphrey route between Wellington Road and Purdy Repton) are oozing with history, including Road (Purdy Path). This has been long Queen Victoria staying there with her mother awaited and I am hopeful it will be completed in 1831 and 1833. It was in 1833 she toured the Osborne estate, which of course she later before the winter weather sets in. It seems that the quote for this has come in under purchased with Albert and built Osborne budget so the remaining monies will be put House as we know it today in 1845.
