Welcome to the November issue of Island Magazines. I don’t have much to say this month on the weather except that it’s been very wet and it feels like it’s rained for weeks!!! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this the rain will have stopped and we’ll get some nice dry crisp days. Remembrance Sunday is on the 10th of November and the month is packed with Christmas Fayres and firework/bonfire events taking place across the island. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12, 13 and 14 will keep you busy. Please remember that if you are having a firework display in your garden please let your neighbours know so they can ensure their family pets are kept safe and secure. Scammers - they’re out to get you... It’s becoming obvious that scammers are getting smarter and smarter in an attempt to get money and personal information from their victims by intimidation or the promise of cash, prizes, services and other means. IWASP are warning residents to watch out for the following scams that have been reported to them..
Postcode Lottery
Trading Standards are warning residents to be aware of a scam letter purporting to come from the People’s Postcode Lottery. The letter looks very official and tells you that you have won hundreds of thousands of pounds in the Postcode Lottery. Even if you have entered the postcode lottery please be wary as at the end of the letter it requests a “processing fee”. This is a big indicator that this is in fact a SCAM and not genuine. If you are unsure please find your own contact details for the postcode lottery (not those given on the letter) and contact them yourself. Two rules to remember If you haven’t bought a ticket you can’t win You should never have to send money to receive your winnings
Council Tax
Be aware of a scam email that has been received by island residents. Due to its appearance it looks very genuine with the HMRC logo and a link to a Government looking web site. The email states that you have made an overpayment in your council tax and you are due a refund, it directs you to click on a link where you will be asked to complete a form which requests your bank details and card details. THIS IS A SCAM. Your Council Tax payment is made to the IOW Council and NOT a Government website, the IOW Council will never contact you in this way. If you receive this email delete it straight away – DO NOT click on any links and under no circumstances should you give out your bank account or card details in this way.
TV Licensing department Email Scam
Trading Standards have been advised of a scam email that has been received by island residents, allegedly from the TV Licensing department. The email is entitled “Your Direct Debit payment request was declined by your bank” and the content of the email says “We’re sorry to let you know that the TV Licence could not be automatically renewed” and then gives you the option to Update TVL Now by pressing the button. If you receive this email delete it immediately and do not click on the link/button – it is a scam. No legitimate company will ever contact you in this way. 4
Calling all Knitters... Dementia Patients need your help The IOW NHS Trust is appealing for knitters to help create blankets for people living with dementia whilst they are in hospital. Blankets help patients, particularly those living with dementia, to recognise their hospital bed and help provide a more homely feel in a normally clinical hospital ward. Having blankets on the bed will also help patients to see the edge of the bed more clearly when getting in and out and therefore reduce the risk of falls. The scheme has been tried and tested at other NHS hospitals and the IOW NHS Trust is keen to roll it out locally with trials on Appley and Colwell wards. The Trust is now looking for people to help knit or donate wool or new blankets. They need to be brightly colour or patterned and no more that 3 ft wide. There is no restriction to length but to help reduce the risk of falls, short lengths would be preferable. Due to infection control, the blankets are single-use items and will be taken home by the patient when they are discharged. The must be knitted using new wool, or if anyone is donating blankets they must be brand new. People with dementia often have restless hands and like to have something to keep them occupied. The blankets (also known as sensory or comfort blankets) can also provide a wonderful source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation for those with dementia or even sight impairments. The blankets can have additional items stitched on with different shapes and textures. If people would like to be part of a dedicated knitting group, please let the IOW NHS Trust know; if they receive enough interest they will happily look into providing a knitting night so it can also become a social event for people too. Any donations of knitted blankets, new blankets or wool can be left at the main reception desk of St Mary’s Hospital, Newport. For more information contact mandy. blackler@iow.nhs.uk 5
News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 During October the traffic diversion linked to the road improvements to St Mary’s Roundabout on Forest Road has been routed around Newport and through Carisbrooke. Whilst this has not been what we would have desired I feel it has generally been reasonably well managed, and hopefully concluded when you read this. During the time of the diversion I drove the route during morning and evening rush hours on many occasions to monitor the flow of traffic, which after the first few days, I felt, improved considerably. I have had a few complaints regarding car engines idling at the temporary traffic lights causing extra pollution, but unfortunately, being a multi user route already it has been essential to slow traffic as much as possible so that the pedestrian element are able to be as safe as possible. What concerns me about the overall scheme is, despite my pressure at all stages over the last year, the lack of marked cycle routes on the master plan. This is particularly apparent on the hospital/B&Q (East) side of the scheme. I have had communications from the cycling fraternity objecting to this and so will continue to apply pressure to have these included in the plan. I have also noticed that they have neglected to mark the underpass cycle way, although they have marked the connections to it. I have questioned why footpath N32 can’t be upgraded to make it a shared use path (needing to be 2.5/3m width). I feel certain there is ample space for this and will pursue the possibility. This is vital for sustainable transport as it would provide a safe route into Newport/ Industrial Estate/ hospital and connect the existing and proposed housing in the Camp Hill area. If this matter concerns you please email directly to the Highways department of the IOW Council with your views.
During October I attended the Annual Forestry Conference in Newbury with Cllr Hastings. This was held by the Forestry Commission and the CLA. There were many topics of interest and the keynote speaker was the chairman of the Forestry Commission, Sir Harry Studholme. As a fairly large area of the Island is covered in woodland it was relevant to our area in many ways. One of the main presentations covered the problems of Ash Dieback, which could affect 90% of our woodland Ash across the country with possibly a small percentage of trees exhibiting a genetic tolerance to the disease. This is of course not restricted to areas of forestry but could affect the Ash trees in your own garden. The actual fungus opens the tree to susceptibility to other pathogens such as Honey Fungus. It is worth monitoring the health of your Ash trees if you have them. A problem area is also those infected trees by the edge of highways where removal is both essential and costly. It gave me great pleasure to visit some of our Island Libraries and see the great work that is being done with young and very young children to encourage them to enjoy books and improve literacy from an early age. The libraries provide excellent social hubs for all ages and where there are so many keen volunteers involved in projects the libraries are bringing communities back together. The pleasure is mine this year to present the awards for the Summer Reading Challenge at the Lord Louis Library. I strongly feel that getting our young people involved with books is paving the way to a bright future for them as good literacy makes all other learning easier.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans The new town map is now in pride of place opposite the Guildhall in the High Street. I hope you’re all pleased, it’s been a long time coming and the artwork produced by Alan Rowe and enamel by AJ Wells is just wonderful! The parish council does have canvas versions of the map for sale if anyone would like one of their own.
Following our successful High Street Heritage Action Zone bid we have now been assigned a Heritage England officer who will be guiding us through the next stage of developing a project, which will then be finalised in January for the final funding figure. This time to develop our plan gives us the opportunity of linking in with many members of the community and organisations that we will be working alongside with during the project duration. For instance Newport Minster and the heritage interpretation that they are working on in St. Thomas’s Square, the architects 10
forum to assist with developing the design code for the town and local historians to name a few. After so many years of neglect this is a wonderful opportunity for us to work together to revitalize our historic town. I have been informed by the Isle of Wight Council that work will soon begin on the former Lamb Tavern in St. James’s Square, by the owners to rectify the current disrepair of this important listed building. The bus station group that is part of Shaping Newport met recently with the new chief executive of the Isle of Wight Youth Trust, who are beginning preparations for a centre in the middle of Newport for young people. This will be a cafe and games style facility, on top of the well-being services the trust provides. The parish council will be supporting them with a grant to help get the necessary refurbishment achieved. If any trades people would like to volunteer to assist with the refurbishment of the former shop please do get in touch. A Community Connector will be appointed in Newport soon to assist with helping people to reach community groups and services. The Isle of Wight Council and Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council are both putting £20,000 continued over the page
towards this new role for a year and if successful the parish council will take on responsibility in full. We are working with Independent Arts who are based in Quay Street who have a great deal of experience in this field.

The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Update By Lesley Myland You may have recently heard via various sources about the Friends’ foyer cafe moving to another location within the new outpatients department in the North Hospital. Naturally we are sad about this - we have been serving our customers in the foyer for 32 years. However, our amazing team of volunteers and staff have a very positive approach to this development. We are working hard together to ensure that the Friends’ charity will keep on functioning to support the patients and staff at St Mary’s. We plan to keep our amazing team together as far as we can. We will have a bigger shop and will still be running three cafes. Ward trolley services will still go round daily, sometimes twice daily. So there is still lots to do and we will do our best to maintain our reputation for a caring attitude and good service. In the meantime, here are some of the things we have given grants for, as always with the objective of enhancing care and staff well being. We have provided the maternity unit with 5 relaxing and reclining chairs so that partners can wait in comfort for their new babies to arrive, no matter how long it takes! We are very proud of our contribution of £1500 towards the Memory Room for dementia patients in Colwell Ward. This provides a place to relax and enjoy distraction therapies especially designed to be familiar, calming and absorbing. The room is also used by non dementia patients. Note the twiddlemuffs which were made by Friends volunteers and customers with wool kindly donated by members of the public after an appeal. We gave Children’s Speech and Language Therapy 2 iPads and a range of toys designed to help with speech, attention and listening skills which in turn help with other communication skills. As soon as we are settled in our new home in the North Hospital we hope that all our customers will still come and join us for their cuppa! That way we can continue with this support for the patients and staff at St Mary’s Hospital. 15
