Welcome to the November issue. The clocks have gone back an hour and that extra time in bed was gratefully received. Autumn is in full swing and Winter is just around the corner. There has been a definite drop in the temperature but there have still been some lovely sunny days. For me it’s the simple things in life like still getting the washing dry outside!

‘Bits & Blogs’ As the nights draw in nothing beats sitting down with a good book, but one better than that is a book written by a fellow Isle of Wighter… ‘Bits and Blogs’ is the work of Poppy Fields who moved to the Island permanently after being made redundant from her job of 25 years. Before that she lived between the Island and the mainland and her book follows the ups and downs of life, many of which we will all be able to relate to. Written as a collection of blogs her funny, lighthearted, emotive, and touching anecdotes about her life can be enjoyed and they also make it easy for the reader to dip in and out of this entertaining book. Poppy is just a typical wife and grandmother who now works part time in Morrisons. She shares colourful stories about several weird and wonderful episodes in her life – from the day-to-day quandaries of a middle-aged, bingo-loving, accident-prone, hot-tub-dipping, sweet-fanatic mother, her continuous battle with her weight (and frustrations with Fat Clubs!), and a very Sober October to raise money for Macmillan in memory of her dear late friend. Along with her love and pride for her close-knit family, and an abundance of hilarious moments that will literally have you laughing out loud, the author also reflects on some poignant and sad times in her life that will resonate with anyone who has ever been in a similar position. This book is the perfect gift for yourself or as a Christmas present that will just keep giving and giving. Available to buy from Amazon as a paperback or kindle edition.

News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 After a long hot summer, we are now heading into winter and all the new challenges that might bring. As I write we are still in the medium risk group for Covid 19 and hopefully, if we all follow the rules, this won’t increase. It is important to remember that this virus is still very much part of our lives and we need to remain aware of managing the distancing rules and maintain hand hygiene and wearing masks as required. It would be so very sad if at Christmas we were not allowed to mix with our families and share the seasonal celebrations because of being lax now. It can change at the drop of a hat so there really isn’t room to take a day off from our conscientious behaviour. We are all in this together, we need to support the more vulnerable members of our community and those who can’t get out to do their shopping easily as the colder weather comes will still need our support…possibly more than ever. This is the time for our communities to show how strong they actually are. Aren’t we lucky living in Carisbrooke and Gunville that we are surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside on the island? Imagine working from home and being stuck in a flat in a city with nowhere to go and enjoy the freedom of walking in the fresh air at a time like this. Just this last month the police arrested 2 people in Carisbrooke who were believed to be involved in dealing Class A drugs. According to the police Facebook Page and other reports the targeted areas were St Marys churchyard and The Shrubbery 10
at the Castle. This is particularly worrying as these areas are frequented by children going to school. It is so sad, when we are trying to encourage children to walk to school rather than being taken by car. We must all stay alert to this and make sure our children understand the consequences of becoming involved in such terrible things. The young are the target of the County Lines drug rings which aim to move drug selling out into the rural communities. Your child/grandchild, or that of someone you know could be so easily targeted as a courier... it might look to them like an innocent way of making a bit of pocket money... but the implications are far greater, as once they are involved there is no turning back and the final outcome not good…. Breaking the law at the very least... but worse than that they too could become addicted to drugs. Be aware of changes in the behaviour of the younger members of your family and never be afraid of passing any information to the police. They are trying their hardest to put an end to this dreadful, damaging situation and are happy for any intelligence that you might have to pass on to them. They will monitor suspicious areas; you may have noticed a greater police presence in the areas I have mentioned. The skies above me to the south of Carisbrooke have been busy with many different things, all the more noticeable with so few commercial aircraft on route to somewhere! This last month or so I continued over the page
News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. have had the excitement of a hot air balloon only some 150 feet or so feet above my garden... what a wonderful thing to see. The spitfire has been overhead almost daily. Yesterday a gyrocopter and a regular drone. There seem to be more private light aircraft, helicopters and micro lights up there too….but possibly the most exciting was watching a white-tailed eagle soaring over the woodlands adjacent to my home. I watched for ages in awe of its size and beauty... dwarfing the multiple buzzards in the area….most of whom disappeared when the eagle arrived! The geese are flying in formation every evening too…I’m not sure where they are heading but such a beautiful sight and their accompanying honking noises are really quite joyful! Remember to look up… its all too easy when things are tough to only look at the ground before you… there is so much over our heads that can cheer each day.

The hawthorn bush is home to at least 20+ little sparrows and a blackbird but it is clear to see that Mr Robin is the leader and has no trouble keeping everyone in line. The robin is officially Britain’s national bird and they have been associated with Christmas as postmen in Victorian Britain were nicknamed “robins” because of their red-breasted coloured uniforms. So, the robin on the Christmas card came to represent the postman who delivered the card.

I had no trouble thinking of this month’s front cover. All I had to do was look out my window for inspiration as I have been befriended by a little robin who lives in the hawthorn at the bottom of the garden. I decided to name him and to be honest I decided to keep it simple and he is now known as Mr Robin… he is here all day, every day and has been for the last 5 weeks or so. Most mornings you can hear his high pitched singing and some particular mornings if he has got out of bed on the wrong side (which happens to us all) he can be very vocal and almost aggressive in his tune. This also happens if I have been a bit slack and not filled the feeders to the standard he likes.

Robins are known to have spiritual and symbolic meanings and signifies loved info@dazzleexternalcleaning.com ones are still with us after they pass away, bringing us a sign from heaven, encouraging us to move forward with acceptance and determination. Above all, the robin red breast symbolises passion, a new beginning, and re-birth. Therefore, if the bird flies into your life you will be blessed with happiness and joy.
I take a lot of pleasure from feeding the birds, and this small task means so much to them as the winter weather can have a severe impact on them and they can use up to 10% of their body weight during one cold night, and unless able to feed well every day to replenish its reserves, a prolonged cold spell can be fatal. Once they know food is available, they will be back time and time again.
