Dear Readers Welcome to the October issue of Island Magazines. Mention the word October and I automatically think of crisp Autumn leaves, cooler weather, sweaters and boots!!! Yet whilst writing this, the sun is shining and we have had a good few sunny days leading up to this point. The Island is nearly empty of visitors and although it is nice having them here it’s nice to get the Island back to ourselves. In this months issue there is an appeal to all readers for your help with the Rotary Christmas Shoebox Appeal to send presents to disadvantaged children and you will find full details of this on pages 8 and 9. The ‘Dates for your Diary’ is on page 12 and although not quite as busy as the summer months there are still interesting events happening across the Island. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep using the services of our advertisers and if you have any news or events happening in the future please feel free to send me the details. Until next month. Winter Warning from the Footprint Trust “Winter is coming and it is time to act now!” says Island energy charity. The Island’s Footprint Trust are urging people to make sure that they are on the correct energy tariff now rather than wait until the high bills arrive. Speaking for the Trust, Ray Harrington-Vail said; “Every week we come across households who are paying up to £200 per year more than they should, due to them not talking to their energy company and getting the best deal.” “It isn’t just about switching supplier...”, explains Ray. “Showing people how to use their heating systems to best effect, can save money and keep people at a comfortable temperature. Replacing old dangerous white goods with new safe energy-efficient ones is also a wise thing to do. We can also arrange for grant-funded insulation of most homes.” “We are keen to hear from anyone who has concerns about their energy bills, we can be contacted on 822282 or by email at ray@footprint-trust.co.uk” The Trust would also like to hear from community and church groups who would like to be informed about the project. Free training is also available to frontline workers so they can also assist people struggling with their utility bills.

Newport’s Bloomin’ Green Competition The alternative gardening competition, that was devised by Cllr Lois Prior in 2012, as part of Newport’s Green Town project, saw a large increase in entries this year from local residents to community groups and schools. Instead of judging the gardens on how many flowers it has, or how glamorous it is, the aim is to encourage Newport and Carisbrooke’s residents to grow gardens that are good for wildlife and for the environment. Past winner Claire Draper, owner and director of The Plant Shop, helped Cllr Prior with the hard task of judging and selecting the winners. The results are: Best for Butterflies and Bees—Brian and Ruth Colling Best for Wildlife—St Georges School Best use of recycled materials— Mr & Mrs Cox Most Productive (fruit and vegetables) - Alvington Allotments 4 Highly Commended prizes were also awarded, along with 4 Commended Certificates. As this is the final year of the competition Cllr Prior made a special award for the Chairman’s Most Inspirational Garden, which was won by St Georges School. The judges praised the school for their innovative work and good use of the planting areas. Pupils are encouraged to take part in all aspects of production from seed to the table and are also encouraged to develop wildlife areas. Full details and pictures are available on our website . Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 It’s hard to believe that the children are all now back at school. It was mostly great weather and so I’m sure they will have benefitted from the break... it just seems to have flown by. The school crossings, as promised, continue and also as promised I am still in pursuit of the engineered crossings that we need on Carisbrooke Road. I have recently had a conversation with the officer working on this and he tells me that the design engineers have looked at the possibilities and are putting together a set of drawings to submit for consideration by the Isle of Wight Council. So whilst things are moving forward we are still a very long way from knowing whether or not we get these… I will keep you informed as I hear any developments. I have had further meetings with the highways department engineers regarding Clatterford Road. We are endeavoring to provide a solution that will be the best it can for everyone and as soon as I have received his proposals I will advise you of the outcome and arrange an opportunity to discuss.

discussed as yet, if you do have an opinion please let me know. I’m pleased to see the three new bridges have been erected at the fords on Clatterford Shute, Castle Street and Spring Lane. These should greatly assist the flow of the river as the extra height, coupled with the open railings, should allow water to pass under more freely as well as over, and through, the railings rather than backing up as has happened previously due to blockages. This is another stage in the ongoing upgrades to our flood control programme. I have received mixed views on their appearance, personally I think that they are strong and fit for purpose and I am sure that they will weather in over time, to look more as people hoped they would, and complement our heritage area.

I have been asked by a number of residents about the future of Taylor Road. With the proposed new development adjacent to Taylor Road the question being asked is whether it will be opened up again to release the pressure of school transport on It was a pleasure to be invited along as one of Carisbrooke High Street and Priory Road. It is the judges for the Allotments Competition. I was amazed at how smart and productive very early days and nothing has been 6

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart most of the allotments are, and it was clear to me that there are some very keen and skilled gardeners out there. I wish I had such green fingers!! The overall winner was Mrs P Atkinson from Millers Lane who’s allotment was outstanding. Mr Pointer was judged best at Clatterford; Mrs J Webster best at Hillside; Mrs Morey best at Castle Road; Ms Gallop best at Fieldhouse and Mr R Smith best at Pan. Also congratulations to the winners of the Carisbrooke in Bloom garden awards: Matthew Witham (Newport West) and Mr and Mrs Lambert from Gunville

Gutter Clutter We are now into Autumn and the leaves will be falling from the trees and they could potentially be falling into and blocking your gutters which in turn could make your insurance null and void as most insurers now claim that gutter clearing falls under general maintenance and is something that should be looked at regularly. When your guttering is blocked the rain water will over flow and will eventually cause damage to the structural elements of the building, water will erode the building material and can ultimately cause damage to the foundations, drainage system and the paving. Internally, damp will appear and create mold and mildew that is not only bad for the building but also your health. Having your gutter cleared once a year will significantly reduce the risk of any blockages caused by leaves, moss or any other debris. This means that the water from your roof will flow directly to the drainage system and away from your property reducing the risks of damage to your property. Island Garden Timber Care offer the latest technology in gutter clearing saying goodbye to costly scaffolding and ladders their hi tech powered vacuum with portable video camera allows them to survey and clean gutters from ground level.

Are you fed up with your dirty paving? Does your timber need some TLC? We can get it looking like new again. WE ALSO OFFER

A Hearty Homemade Soup We are coming into soup season and you can’t beat a homemade one… one of my favourites is butternut squash (this can also be done with pumpkin or a mixture of both) and I like to make a big batch so I have plenty left over to freeze and then I can just take it out the freezer in the morning and hey presto a home cooked soup for your evening meal with some nice fresh crusty bread!!! The beauty of this one is there is no fine chopping so it is quick and easy.

squash, onion, garlic and pepper and stir. Add the cumin, coriander, chilli flakes and salt and pepper and cook for 5 minutes ensuring they don’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Add the vegetable or chicken stock until the vegetables are covered and simmer for 30 minutes or until all the vegetable are tender. Keep an eye on the stock level and add more if necessary. Remove off heat and carefully add to a blender, and blend until smooth. Return to the pot, and mix in any remaining stock to get the desired consistency.

Monthly Report for Newport by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, IoW, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: Julie.Jones-Evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans For the past few months I have been part of a group looking at some of the issues in Newport that occur due to the “Night Time Economy”. By this I mean the nightclubs, bars and restaurants that operate into the evening and late at night. Much of the problems that the police deal with late at night are due to the anti-social and often violent behaviour of people that have been drinking excessively. Representatives from Licensing, Police, Fire and Rescue Public Health, Ambulance Service, Street Pastors, Licensed Premises, Southern Vectis, Taxis and IW Council Planning have worked up some ideas that we hope will alleviate the pressure that can build late on a Friday and Saturday night. We looked at data that showed the types of crime in Newport and specific locations and what time the crimes occurred. There was a lot of discussion about what was happening and what could do done about it, including a briefing from officers from Southampton as to what they were experiencing. One idea which I put forward is that food could be available to the customers of the nightspots such as Hogs Head and Yates, which already have facilities for food service. My thoughts were that it is a good distraction and is often what people who are inebriated want at that time of night. Hogs Head have already started serving a limited menu and it has been received very well by all. The main scheme is that of getting people out of Newport quickly when the nightspots close in the early hours. A common flashpoint is where people are walking through the town to get to the bus station

and taxi ranks in South Street, St Thomas’ Square is one of the places where trouble can start. I have residents who live in and around the square who often get disturbed by the inevitable noise and not to mention the suffering of the people involved in any unpleasant incidents. What is being proposed is for on Friday and Saturday nights more taxis are available in the lower High Street and also that buses will depart from a new stop, again in the lower High Street. Revellers will be able to get a taxi or bus home quickly and easily, thus reducing the likelihood of conflict between people crossing the town. A plan has been drawn up, which will cost £2,100 to implement, partners are all chipping in to the costs, which Island Roads have reduced from the initial figure of £2,500. Newport Parish Council were asked to contribute. Although there was no budget for this, fortunately each of the 7 Newport wards has an annual ward budget of £450, a idea I introduced a few years ago to give freedom to the 2 ward councillors to support ward specific projects that crop up during the year, without having to get agreement from the other 12 council members. Cllr Prior is my fellow Newport Central councillor and she was very supportive of the scheme to help reduce violence and help give peace of mind of to our residents who live in the town, so we donated £200 from our ward budget. The consultation is currently underway, so please feel free to comment on the proposals by contacting me or the IW Council. 15
