Welcome to the October issue of Island Magazines and you are probably, like me, wondering where the time has gone and how could we be in Autumn already! The weather has changed recently and you can feel the chill in the air especially early morning and in the evening although we have still had some nice sunny days. If you are a dog owner you’ll be pleased to know that from the 1st October our little furry four legged friends can once again play on the beaches that were out of bounds to them during the summer season. I know my own little dog Alfie, will be excited by this news. October is a bit quieter on the events side than previous months but there is still plenty happening across the Island and you can find all the information in our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12 and 13. If you have an event happening please feel free to email the details for inclusion in future issues. Once again this issue is packed with news and information and I hope you enjoy reading it.

Hare Piece This month our front cover star has got me asking the question ‘are you running to, or from somewhere’!!?? This particular hare was caught mid stride by local photographer Nick Edwards. Many of you will already be aware of Nick’s work and the dedication he has towards photographing local hares, initially to provide data for surveys being conducted by the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society. It has now spread beyond our Island’s shores and Nick’s photos of hares are appealing to a wide audience, appearing in several national publications and calendars. You will find him out at dawn and dusk on an almost daily basis patiently awaiting the close approach of his popular photographic subject.

I’ve started on a journey... I’ve been wanting to take this journey for years and I am always mumbling my favourite mantra ‘I really want to learn yoga’. I normally say it most when things in my life aren’t going to plan which in my case is when I am feeling unwell and stressed.

My instructor Nickie Short is going to be by my side every step of the way and already I have learnt some new tools to help me manage and deal with everyday stresses. I have so far experienced how to connect and encourage my body to relax whilst being aware of my breathing and learning how to control it for a better quality of breath. Simple stretches for the lower back and learning how to synchronise breath and movement will help me with the back pain. We also covered awareness of posture and how being aware of my feet and waking them up can improve posture and balance. I feel my first lesson has gone really well and Nickie has sent me notes with instructions of everything we covered so I can carry on the good work at home. Already I am counting down the days until our next meeting. If I remind you of yourself then please do as I have done and take the first step. It seems more daunting than it really is. Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 The Heritage Open days that were held across the Island, and particularly those in the Newport and Carisbrooke area were very well attended. These days are run on a National level and see various heritage attractions opening their doors free of charge. Locally St Mary’s Church hosted a very well received talk on the history of the church, a grade 1 listed building, presented by Richard Smout who as our senior heritage officer, also organised the opening of the Newport Roman Villa... a hidden treasure in Cyprus Road... this was also well attended by parents and children. The open day also saw free entry to the Guildhall Museum and by the time this goes to press St Mary’s hospital will have also celebrated 70 years of the NHS by holding an open day at the hospital. If you missed Heritage Open Day this year please look out for it next year as it is a great opportunity to find out a bit more about where we live and our past.
achieves the ability to cross the ford but not encourage high speed driving.
Speeds are too high on so many of these country lanes, such as Froglands, Millers Lane, Sandy Lane, Marvel Lane etc. I am working with the Cabinet Member for Transport, Cllr Ian Ward, to try to achieve quiet Lane status for as many of these lanes as possible (20mph max) as many of them are used by cyclists, riders and walkers as they link some of the major trails on the Island. Unfortunately wildlife also suffers from these high speeds (6 red squirrels have been killed on the road that I live on this summer) not to mention the damage that is occurring to hedges and banks by vehicles out of control. Achieving slower safer country lanes would benefit so many as we all know that getting out in the fresh air and walking is good for health and wellbeing, not too mention the tourists who visit for the This year, on November 9th at 2pm there will walking festival amongst other reasons. One of the key factors of a quiet lane is the fact be a WW1 memorial and wreath laying at that it gives priority for non motorised traffic... the Simeon Green. To mark the occasion the i.e walkers, riders and cyclists have right of paved memorial area will be extended and way over vehicles and so hopefully this would a further bench added. There will also be a citation board put in place. Many young men discourage car drivers from using our single left our parish never to return and this will be track country lanes as rat runs! The idea of quiet lanes is supported by the local access a great way of honouring and remembering forum and I’m sure we would love to hear them. The full list of those who gave their lives is around the walls of St Nicolas in Castro, from you if you support this idea. the chapel at Carisbrooke Castle, names of locals are also on the memorial in Carisbrooke Finally whilst on the subject of footpaths the Churchyard. Please do feel free to attend this Coastal Path for the Island is still progressing. Natural England are in negotiations with short but poignant memorial. land owners such as Jersey Camp (MOD) and As I write Froglands Ford has been closed until Osborne House (English Heritage) as these further notice. Unfortunately as the bottom is areas fall under ‘Parks and Gardens’ and ‘MOD’ it is possible that they can be excluded soft it has eroded away causing a steep drop from the path... interesting really as both are from the entry point, causing damage on the government properties and the Coastal Path is way in and inability to get out. Several have a government initiative... I’m hopeful that we had to be towed. Island Roads are looking at how we can create a permanent solution that will find a solution.

Friends of Newport & Carisbrooke Cemeteries www.foncc.org.uk Volunteers helping to care for the cemeteries and record the lives of those resting there
The First Year Over the last 12 months, this small group of volunteers have been working in the Fairlee and Mount Joy Cemeteries clearing the vegetation which has overgrown the memorials, recording the burials and researching their lives. The Friends website now records all burials at the cemeteries (up to 2000) together with site maps with their locations. Photographs of the memorials, transcriptions of inscriptions and the results of research of those buried are also being added by the volunteers. A total of 117 names of World War victims (both military and civil) are listed on the website – as well as those buried in the cemeteries, this includes a number of inscriptions on family memorials for those who didn’t return; these family memorials have often been forgotten and are not recorded elsewhere. www.foncc. org.uk/burials/grave-search/wd_list_result.php Progress on clearing memorials and recording/researching them is slow as there are only a small number of volunteers - new members would be welcome, not only to clear vegetation in the cemeteries, but also researching those interred. The group can be contacted via their website - www.foncc.org.uk – or Tony Barton telephone 01983 521183 for more details.
