Early Detection Gives You a Fighting Chance One man dies every 45 minutes (around 11,800 men every year) from prostate cancer and it is now the leading cancer found in men but statistics show that if caught in the early stages, treatment is 80% effective. Mention the words Prostate Cancer and PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) Testing and most men will immediately conjure up an invasive and embarrassing testing procedure but in reality it is a simple blood test that is pain free and takes less than 5 minutes This simple BLOOD TEST measures the amount of antigen produced by the prostate entering the blood. It is not a diagnostic/direct test for cancer, but gives an indicator of the health of the prostate. Regular testing showing an increasing reading can indicate a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Unfortunately despite the increasing number of prostate cancer diagnosis and mortality, there is not a regular screening test, and some GP’s are reluctant to offer a PSA test to men over 50 years. Without screening, around 47,000 men are diagnosed General symptoms with prostate cancer each year. of problems with

50% of all men will have a health problem with their frequent need to prostate at some stage of their lives. It could be an urinate especially infection, enlargement or cancer. 15% will develop at night, bursting to prostate cancer and those with family history of the urinate, slow flow, disease or of African-Caribbean origin are 3 times difficult or painful (45%) more at risk but the main thing to think about flow, stop/start is that early detection gives you an above average fighting chance!!! dribbling, or blood in the urine The Charity Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group in partnership with Ryde Lions are offering FREE PSA blood testing for men aged 45 to 85 years on 19th October at Ryde Academy, Pell Lane, Ryde, PO33 3LN The testing will be conducted by trained phlebotomists taking blood from a vein in the arm, this will be analysed at a hospital laboratory and after a report has been produced by a Urological Consultant, the result will be sent to the person being tested within 7 – 10 working days. Every 45 minutes another man dies 2

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Shaping Newport has had its first successful funding bid approved by Historic England which will enable us to do something really positive and long lasting for the town. Following this exciting announcement of the £1.4m project for Newport town centre - Minster/Market Quarter - we are now beginning to put our vision and plans into action. We will be creating a grant for shop improvements to enable business owners to bring their frontages back to life. To assist in this a design code will be created. This is a helpful guide to ensure buildings are refurbished to reflect the historic nature of the area. We will also be taking part in Historic England cultural programme, events and exhibitions that will tell the story of our town so the next generation can have an understanding of our history. We will also be developing plans for the future of the Guildhall and Improvements to the pedestrian environment. This will take place over the next 4 years with professional assistance from historic England and working with local businesses. What we have learnt this year from the funding opportunities we have applied for unsuccessfully, is that many places have got their foot in the door by delivering a smaller project. This demonstration of delivery gives the funding bodies confidence that the community can make things happen. In particular King’s Lynn started off as a heritage action zone - which we are now - this has led them to be successful in 3 rounds of funding this summer adding up to millions and millions of pounds. So we see this 4

first project as being just the start for investment in Newport. For many years I and others have been campaigning for slower traffic speeds in the county town and we now have an opportunity to move this forward. A resident recently came to a parish council meeting and requested community speed watch be set up in Newport. We have had subsequent meetings with the police and this month we will be looking at purchasing the necessary equipment to set up the scheme. If anyone is interested in taking part in community speed watch please let me or the parish council office know. Resident parking scheme consultation has been taking place, with residents in Caesar’s Road, Clifford Street, Hearn Street, Field Place, Drill Hall Road, West Street, Cross Street, Portland Street, and Clarence Road all being given opportunity to vote to have restricted parking in their streets. Residents have been waiting for this chance for many years and at last we have a policy in place that allows residents this choice where there is high demand for commuter parking. At the same time the Isle of Wight Council is producing a local parking strategy for Newport which was a recommendation from the overall parking strategy from 2016. This ensures that our local needs are taken into account and provided for. For instance we have a lack of long stay parking in town which is why our side streets are so popular with commuters. We have to balance the needs of everybody to have a thriving town and community.

Getting Yourself Back on Your Feet Have you ever thought about how hard your feet work for you? Yet many of us neglect them and underestimate how important they are... in many cases they go the extra mile but along the way certain issues can crop up such as ingrowing toenails, corns, hard skin, verrucas and fungal infections, to name a few.

It may be that through medical issues such as diabetes and the fact that none of us are getting any younger, even simple tasks such as nail trimming and cracked heels can become difficult to take care of and that is why you should always seek the help of a professional, and Steven Long not only ticks this box but he also offers a mobile service so all treatments can be carried out in the comfort of your own home, whilst relaxing in your own armchair. Steven is always happy to discuss your requirements and welcomes you to call him on 721987 or 07799 334900 to discuss how he can help you and make your life that little bit easier.

A Game of Conkers Autumn is coming and if you are of a certain age you will probably remember scrabbling around on your hands and knees underneath a horse chestnut tree looking for the biggest and baddest conkers which would knock your opponents to pieces!! Back in the day a game of conkers was a healthy playground activity in which you pitched yourself against another person and take turns hitting each other’s conker with your own. One player lets theirs dangle on the full length of the string while the other player swings and hits. To prepare your conker for battle a hole had to be drilled or made in the middle and a piece of string or shoelace was threaded through with a large knot at one end to secure in place. Yes I admit it could get a little rough at times especially if you were unlucky enough to receive a whack on the knuckles. It does take you by surprise and gives a sting but it certainly was never life threatening and it is such a shame that this tradition has faded out over time and is no longer found in the playground. Of course everyone wanted to win so those that were really competitive weren’t afraid to cheat by making their conker as hard as a rock. I was never involved in this type of skulduggery but I understand

that some people baked them in the oven or put them in vinegar and apparently if you keep them for a year they naturally harden. I like to think back on my memories and remember that if ever I did win a game it was through skill and determination and nothing else!!! The first recorded game of conkers using horse chestnuts was on the Isle of Wight in 1848. There is uncertainty of the origins of the name. The name may come from the dialect word conker, meaning “knock out” (perhaps related to French conque meaning a conch, as the game was originally played using snail shells and small bits of string) The name may also be influenced by the verb conquer, as earlier games involving shells and hazelnuts have also been called conquerors. In 1965 the World Conker Championships were set up in Ashton (near Oundle) Northamptonshire, England, and still take place on the second Sunday of October every year. In 2004, an audience of 5,000 turned up to watch more than 500 competitors from all over the world. The 2016 Championship was featured on the BBC programme “Countryfile”. Apparently on finding your first conker of the season, you should say “oddly oddly onker my first conker”. This ensures good fortune and few tangles throughout the coming season.

News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 I have been attending the public meetings to discuss the future of the Island Plan. It needs to be made clear that the plan has been written to match the governments national requirement, which has little consideration for our Island’s special situation and infrastructure. This doesn’t mean that we are simply accepting what they say is required (641 houses a year) We are of course, contesting this, although this may not be apparent as it is going on in the background. We cannot question the need for affordable housing as there are some 2,500 people on the housing register. (Not necessarily homeless, but needing suitable accommodation) Our MP, Bob Seely is taking this on board and is working with council to address the status of the plan and to try and achieve suitable development in appropriate places, probably a need for half the proposed development in my opinion. I know that this still sounds a lot, but we must recognise a shortage of housing for our island residents. We need to be looking at developments that are not aimed at 2nd home owners, but for local people on local wages. Rural areas are particularly of concern in my view as properties in rural areas command high prices and high rents and therefore young couples who are rural workers, who may have grown up in a rural area, are now not able to continue living in the area that they work and where their families are. For what it is worth my opinion is that we should be looking at smaller developments attached to existing settlements, giving an opportunity to extend communities rather than creating 1000 house developments which will have to become, not always satisfactorily, whole new communities.

Please be assured that the IWC is not simply accepting this proposal and with the support of our MP we will be fighting this. I am concerned, with my understanding through my Portfolio, which covers environment, about our water supplies on the island. As we already import 30% of our water from the mainland which with climate change will also see reduced water levels, I believe that there is a need for more reservoirs on the island. (particularly in agricultural areas where drought conditions may well effect our productivity). The lack of water should also be considered when building more properties, and another reason why we should be building for those already living here rather than increasing our population. At the moment planning for reservoirs is a lengthy matter. I feel that this should be quicker and with greater control over the quality, size and inspection of such reservoirs and with our special need as an island perhaps even grant aided to ensure that we can be self sufficient into the future. The Environment Agency, are already reviewing and tightening up on abstraction licences both for farmers and water companies due to the ongoing fears. In our daily lives we can contribute to improving the potential water situation by being mindful of our water usage, maintaining the standard of our plumbing, installing water butts for our gardens and reporting leaks when spotted. We are surrounded by water…with sea levels forecast to rise a metre by the end of the century, which will affect Coastal development and clearly illustrating that, whether fresh or salt, water is an island problem! It’s one of the reasons we love it here but something that creates an awful lot of the problems!

ISLAND PUTTING IRST PEOPLE F

I believe that Island people deserve to be listened to and have their issues represented properly to government by putting Island People First and at the centre of democracy. I would vote for the needs of our Island People, be transparent, inclusive and community focused.

I believe that our Health & Wellbeing comes first and that Education can be used to bring change, positivity, employment and reward. We need more NHS and Teaching staff to reduce waiting times and raise education standards. I believe that our island is changing for the better and that we continue to work together within communities to change attitudes, support one another and create our own destinies. Regeneration is not just about building houses it’s about creating better employment opportunities, family choices, mental health and environment matters and it requires improved investment.
