Another month has passed, and our summer was extended with some beautiful sunny days in September. As I write this the sun is still shining but there is now a definite nip in the air both early in the morning and late in the evening showing us that Autumn is here. Autumn is a great season and I always use the time to have a good clear out when putting away the summer clothes and bringing out jumpers and boots. The island is a great place for autumnal walks, and we get to see the countryside change with the season. This is also the time of year when you need to give yourself a health check to get you through the next few months. As well as Covid hanging around, now is also the time when colds, coughs and flu viruses are looking for their next victims. On page 10 you will find some top tips on how you can help yourself and boost your immune system from local Nutritionist Michele Newton.

What a Load of Rubbish… Waste disposal on the Island is an ongoing problem and the only way to deal with this is to ensure you use a reputable business which holds a Registered Waste Carrier Licence. This way you can be safe in the knowledge that any waste they remove from your property will be dealt with in line with all regulations and you will also receive a Waste Transfer Note. Wight Waste & Services is a local company owned by Luke Stagg and he holds the correct licence to enable him to collect domestic and commercial waste. Luke is passionate about the environment and aims to recycle 95% of waste collected with many usable items being donated to charity. Whether you have a pile of rubbish building up outside your house, shed or garage from either a recent ‘spring clean’ or just not being able to get to the council run amenity sites then Wight Waste can help. They also offer full and part house clearances and are ready to tackle even the most ‘jungle’ like gardens and will dispose of all garden waste. There has been an increase in fly-tipping on the Island and unfortunately Dinosaur Isle in Sandown were victims to this recently and thanks to the community spirit that Luke has he headed straight to the location and cleared and disposed of the waste for free. Wight Waste & Services are friendly, polite and offer quotes and collection at a time to suit your needs. They supply digital receipts and now accept all major credit cards so can always adhere to social distancing. For a quote or for more information see their main advert on the back cover or call Luke on 07743 124 432

It’s Good to Have Them Back… It’s great to see the re-opening of The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Shop. This wonderful community venture touches the lives of many. All the money they raise through the dedicated work of their volunteers is ploughed back into the hospital, buying vital equipment for patients and professionals. It’s been a tough year so far for the Friends, not just with Covid-19 but at the beginning of the year they were relocated from their prime position and had to basically start again. They may have been dealt a blow, but they have bounced back with even more determination. Their new shop is just past reception on the ground floor and not far from the main entrance to the Hospital. Over the years they have raised over £1.5 million and they want to keep building on this and desperately need your help. Please support them by using the shop at the hospital which is stocked full of goodies to tempt you - gifts, cards, news and snacks. They have not been able to re-open their cafes in outpatients, the Ryde Wellbeing Clinic and the Laidlaw Centre as Covid-19 has made this impossible for now. Their ward trolley service which also brought a smile to patients faces has also ceased operating and this has impacted hard on everyone. The staff and volunteers always remain positive and they hope that some time in the future they will be serving you tea and coffee again. They look forward to welcoming you into the shop and please support where you can. You can also donate via the many collection boxes across the island. They have supported St Mary’s staff and patients for 32 years now and with your help they can keep on doing that for another 32! 5

News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 After enjoying a lovely end to the summer there is definitely a chill in the morning air! I imagine it won’t be long before we are closing the windows and layering up with more clothes... all the more reason for us to be vigilant about social distancing, wearing masks and looking after our general health. 2020 is possibly one of the strangest years most of us have lived through that’s for sure! It was with great sadness that I heard the news of Brian Greening’s sudden death and I extend my condolences to his family at this sad time. I will remember Brian fondly and will always be in awe of the depth and breadth of his local knowledge and grateful for his desire to pass that knowledge on to all who were interested. It’s fortunate that he and his great friend Bill Shepherd took time to put some of this knowledge into books, but I’m sure there’s lots more that never got written down. I personally remember a chat that I had with him when I first stood for election in Carisbrooke and Gunville…. he told me ‘you could be in with half a chance here as your grandfather won with a resounding majority back in 1922’ I didn’t even know that my grandfather had been a Councillor for Carisbrooke or anywhere else for that matter. (He had died when I was very young, and I hardly knew him). Brian’s comment set me off on a whole trail of exploration and research that for me was fascinating. I think he had a way of inspiring people and igniting a passion for the past that many never knew they had. He will be sorely missed. 6

During the works at St Mary’s Roundabout traffic has been re- routed through Carisbrooke and Gunville which I know has been pretty miserable for residents. Hopefully, the disruption won’t go on for too much longer. One thing that has been very clear is that by reducing the road parking on Carisbrooke Road (opposite Recreation Ground Road) the traffic flow has been far better coming out of Newport. I’m sure that those who park in this area wouldn’t agree that the lines should be a permanent feature... but what is important is to get a balance of traffic flow and parking spaces, so ideally we need another car park in the area with residents parking permits. I would love to have feedback from those of you that live in the area, particularly if you have an idea where another car park could be situated. It has been suggested to me that the old tennis courts, by Victoria Rec, now overgrown with self seeded trees and brambles, would be an ideal spot. The area is substantial enough for quite a few parking spaces and being adjacent to a footpath/cycleway has safe and easy access to other areas. ( I also think that clearing this ground would make it less welcoming to those individuals ‘up to no good’, who I know frequent the area). I would be interested in your views. On the 1st September I stood down from my Cabinet Portfolio for Heritage continued over the page

News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. and Environment, as I feel the need to concentrate on my ward of Carisbrooke and Gunville due to the past 6 months effectively being lost. The Portfolio will now be in the capable hands of my colleague Cllr Steve Hastings. I will be supporting Steve with various aspects of the portfolio, such as the coastal path which I passionately believe in, as I am determined that the public should have free access to our magnificent coastline. I will always have a deep interest in the Environment and Heritage of the Island.

Local business Four Seasons Cooking Academy is owned by nutritionist and food safety specialist Michele Newton and she has some wise words for us all… “The colder months are approaching and now is the time to get your immune system fired up to help you beat any seasonal viruses that will be lurking around and to give you a fighting chance to keep yourself healthy and ready to fight whatever is thrown at you” Michele has kindly put together a few immune boosting foods and health tips to get us going. You can find more information on the Four Seasons Cookery Academy Facebook page. Tip 1. Jumbo Oats topped with Berries and a small drizzling of local Honey will keep blood sugars stable for hours. Tip 2. Please, please take a supplement from now until March at least. Even more important now. Go for a top strength tablet or spray. Many of us are low in Vitamin D, even with the lovely weather we’ve enjoyed. Tip 3. At the first sign of a cold/sore throat, make our tried & tested ‘potion’. 1/2 tsp Turmeric mixed into a paste with half a squeezed lemon and a drizzle of (preferably local) honey. Add enough hot water to make a ‘shot’ and down the hatch! Take 3 shots per day. Tip 4. Sweet potatoes contain your full daily need of Vitamin A and a third of your vitamin C requirements. Delicious baked, they will also keep your blood sugars stable. Tip 5. Garlic not only strengthens the immune system, but also has antibacterial properties. Tip 6. Vitamin C is essential for a strong immune system. Our body doesn’t store or produce it so include a variety of items daily, such as oranges and orange juice, peppers, kiwi fruit, broccoli, blackcurrants, strawberries and bananas. Tip 7. Green tea - rich in antioxidants - substances that can slow - or prevent - damage to our cells. Try to have 2 cups a day. The mint flavoured one is lovely. Tip 8. Dark Chocolate (+70%) is superb for our immune system. It contains iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc and selenium - alongside being a powerful antioxidant. Melt a few squares into hot milk to make a delicious - and nutritious - hot chocolate. Tip 9. Kiwi fruit has a packed list of nutrients. Exciting studies are starting to show that 5 per week can reduce asthma induced wheezing. Wow! Tip 10. WELLBEING...... we have all been sorely ‘tested’ this year and this lowers our immune systems for sure. Talk to family/friends about how you’re feeling; exercise and try to take each day as it comes. 10

Lockdown Becomes Slimdown! Local weight-loss expert Kim Street runs award winning Slimming World groups, supporting people in Newport to manage their weight each week. She says: “Lockdown has had an effect on all of us - turning our lives upside down, disrupting our routines and making us feel more anxious than usual as we worry about our own health and the health of loved ones. It’s really no surprise it’s had an effect on our choices around food, drink and activity! I’ve lost 4.5 myself and I know I’ve had my days when it’s felt really difficult to stay motivated... and that’s completely ok, we’re all only human! “When my members made healthy behaviour changes prior to lockdown little did they know this would give them the tools to cope during this challenging time, supporting them to continue to successfully lose or maintain weight loss. “I’ve been so excited to get back to my real-life group and see everyone again, which is running with a few changes to keep everyone safe and reassured. There’s no better place to help you get back in control than a real-life Slimming World group, where there will be absolutely no judgement about the choices you’ve made or weight you’ve gained during lockdown – just understanding, trust, friendship, community spirit and lots of fun and laughter.” Since returning to group in mid August Kim’s members have lost over 100 stones! If you would like to join her booking is essential so call to check availability on 07855747893.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans We were hoping to resume physical Council meetings at Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council, however due to the current Covid-19 situation we have decided to carry on holding virtual meetings for the time being. At our last meeting we discussed the co-option of a new member for Carisbrooke and Gunville. If you are interested in representing this area please contact the office for further information - 559119 or clerk@newportwight.org.uk Post Office Lane toilet green roof has been installed and the landscaping begun, including a lime tree which is an excellent pollinator. We are looking at November to open to the public and stage one completed. Stage two will be to look at further enhancements such as seating if that is what people would like. Shaping Newport is still making progress and the High Street Heritage Action Zone will be selecting a contractor for the Design Code shortly and a website will be launched. I’ve been giving feedback to the IW Council regarding the pop-up active travel schemes, I am concerned that putting in half-baked schemes will be detrimental to the overall aims to create a better walking and cycling environment. I took a motion to IW Full Council to reinforce the need for proper place-making, putting the wellbeing of residents at the heart of plans to improve our towns and villages. We must think 12

of all users, not just keep putting vehicles first. Concerns have been raised about the difficulty of social distancing in town and the IW Council say we can’t have provisions made where it’s needed for example by the banks in St. James’s Square, because they have to prioritise vehicles and not social distancing. Things have to change. I’m really pleased that the IW Council, NCCC and Newport Business Association are putting in funds to support my proposal for the Island Card, essentially a pre-loaded payment card that can be spent at local businesses to help rebuild our island economy. Newport has faced a massive loss with the passing of Brian Greening, local historian and author. He was always a fount of knowledge and I could always go to him about any questions I had regarding the history of our town. He has helped enormously with getting our Historic Trail app ready. I’ll miss him popping into my shop and having a natter and of course leaving me with one of his jokes! Our thoughts go to his family at this terrible time. Brian asked me if NCCC would be able to create an archive of the Newport records and Cllr Price and I will be addressing this.

She allowed me to see that my passions were elsewhere and opened my mind to the possibilities ahead of me. I changed my path and have never looked back.
