Get more out of life with the Oddfellows. Eating out, day trips, group holidays, tea parties and a good old fashioned chat, why not check out what your local Oddfellows can do for you. First formed in 1810, the Oddfellows is a not-for-profit friendly society with 240,000 members across 139 branches nationwide. Open to everyone and all ages, its aim is to help people join together to enjoy the social side of life as well as providing care, advice and support in times of need. There are four branches on the mainland and one on the Isle of Wight. Based in Newport, Isle of Wight, the VECTA branch is a friendly group who put on a host of social events for its members. Barbara Jackson, Secretary for the Southampton District, stated, ‘’We’re a friendly bunch and we are always looking for new faces to join us. Membership is just £30 a year and you get so much out of it. From social gatherings to support when you really need it, the Oddfellows is all about friendship and having a good time.’’ Each year, at their AGM, members nominate charities, that branch will support for that year. This year those nominated were, H & IoW Air Ambulance, R.N.L.I, Royal British Legion, Naomi House, Southampton Hospital P.I.C.U. Oakhaven Hospice, Rose Road Association, National Federation for the Blind, South Hampshire Deaf Childrens Fund, Sholing Valley Study Centre, MacMillians Cancer Relief, Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue, Orphans Gift Fund. VECTA branch charities were YMCA Young Carers and Alzheimers Society.

A charity particular to the Oddfellows is the H.A. Andrews Memorial Fund. To date the fund has supported 18 projects, with sums totalling £760,000. At this years AGM of the society, it was agreed to give £88,000 over the next 3 years to explore ‘’Exploiting the hair follicle as the preferential source of wound healing cells in human skin’’. Each year members are asked to submit research projects, outside the main charities, ie, Cancer Research etc, and one of these is chosen. “Be the best you can be”

Monthly Report for Newport by Julie Jones-Evans Next May sees the 4 year cycle of local government coming full circle as we have elections for both the Parish and IW Council. On October 11th I have arranged for the Local Government Association to hold a Be A Councillor Event at County Hall to help encourage people to understand the role of a councillor and maybe consider standing. We are particularly encouraging women to consider this role as there is a gender imbalance, especially at the IW Council. I’ve responded to the IW Council’s parking strategy consultation and pressed upon them the need for residents parking zones and longer stay car parking in town. I also said that they should consider maximising the potential of the car parking in Newport Harbour and Seaclose, as these are underused. I would price them a bit cheaper than the central car parks, as it is a quick and pleasant walk into town from both these car parks.

John has served as organist at Ryde Parish Church for over twenty years and was chairman of the Isle of Wight Festival of Music, Drama and Dance for thirteen years. In retirement on the Isle of Wight, John has found the time to write his first book, The Vackie Heroes, based loosely on his time as an evacuee in 1941–2 in Ilfracombe, a place which holds many happy memories for him even of those dark days. The story is based on the author’s memories but the events are complete fiction. The book is available in hardback, price £8.95, at Ryde Bookshop or can be ordered from other bookshops and is also available online or direct from the publisher.

It’s great news that The Dog Studio is now up and running and doing very well and this is all thanks to the owner, Beeche Taylor for bringing us this relaxed, friendly place for us to bring our pooches to be pampered, cleaned and groomed. My own little dog Alfie goes to The Dog Studio and previously he has suffered with separation anxiety but when he sees Beeche he gets ever so excited and doesn’t really give me a backward glance as I leave him there for a pampering session. When you first meet Beeche, you can instantly tell that dogs and all animals are her best friends and her calm and friendly manner immediately puts the dogs and owners at ease. She is a professionally qualified, award winning groomer and can style to breed standard or owners preference. If you are like me and are very fussy and have exact requirements then this is the place for you, Beeche doesn’t bat an eyelid when I reel off the list of do’s and don’ts and every time she gets it spot on. Grooms at The Dog Studio are on a one to one basis to make your dog feel at ease and your best friend can have a luxurious massaging bath, full trim, strip or de-shed depending on breed. Nail trim, ear pluck and clean are included in the groom.

The Dog Studio is situated at Osborne Garage, York Avenue in East Cowes and has parking right outside. You can follow them on Facebook or if you want to book an appointment give Beeche a call on 01983 209044. 13

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 When I last wrote it was with great concern regarding the continuation of the schools crossing patrols, particularly on Carisbrooke Road at the bottom of Cedar Hill, but also at the Wellington Road/Carisbrooke Road junction. I urged everyone to express their concerns and many of you did. Cllrs Jones-Evans, Price and myself worked to get these reviewed by the Devolved Services Committee of the NPC and as result we have achieved funding for the forthcoming financial year. When this was brought to the attention of the Committee it became clear that there was also a need for funding for a crossing patrol for the new Barton School (on the old Downside site) and it was agreed that this should also be covered for the next financial year. I am hoping that this maybe extended as it seems to me that it could be a service that would be appropriately managed at a local level by the NPC, as we devolve more and more services from the IOW Council. However none of this can even be debated until the September full Council meeting of the Parish, and it cannot be guaranteed until there is a majority vote in its favour. So although things are looking up nothing is as yet guaranteed. In the mean-time I have asked Highways officers to review the situation regarding permanent engineered crossings in the future at both of these sites. Officers have now visited the sites on Carisbrooke Road, both from the IOW Council and Island Roads, and are reviewing my requests. As before I can only say that, as funding is a key element for a project like this, we may well be waiting for some time for it to come to fruition. I will persist in this matter 14

as I believe it is of utmost importance and that it will contribute greatly to the safety of both schoolchildren and others using these crossing points. You may have seen that works have been ongoing at the Simeon Memorial Green on Carisbrooke Road. This work is in order to create a memorial to Isle of Wight servicemen and women who gave their lives during the First World War. Princess Beatrice’ Isle of Wight Rifles suffered extremely heavy losses at Galipoli in Souvla Bay in 1915 and I cannot help but think that Princess Beatrice, our Island Governor at that time, must have felt great personal loss, particularly as at the very same battle the entire battalion of the Sandringham’s, (from the Royal Estate and village of Sandringham) were wiped out without trace. I’m sure that she knew many of these men as they were estate workers and families that she would have grown up knowing, just as she also knew many from the IOW Rifles for

the same reason. The memorial will be completed during August and should provide a thoughtful space for those remembering family members who served so bravely.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart As always Carisbrooke Castle has been hosting its wonderful summer events. It’s fantastic to have so much going on in the heart of the community and I hope that many of you were able to enjoy the knights and the jousting. I do love seeing history brought to life and I do believe that our young benefit hugely from seeing things in such an exciting way in such a great setting. The bowling green at the castle converted into a tilt yard for a week or two seems perfect on a summers afternoon. I had an interesting meeting with committee members of the Freshwater Angling Club, the owners of Gunville Lake, who informed me that they plan, in the near future, to put in proper security fencing around the lake, particularly along the Alvington Manor View side, in order to protect young children in the area, who have in the past made inroads through the less substantial chain-link fencing.
