Welcome to the September issue and thank you for picking up a copy. The school summer holidays are drawing to a close but lets hope it doesn’t mean that summer is over... I feel positive that we may have an ‘indian summer’ and let’s hope the warm days continue through to the end of September or even October. This months issue is packed with news and information and a big ‘shout out’ to all budding authors to check out the competition advertised on the back cover. Saturday the 23rd September is “Isle of Wight Day”. It’s a time when the whole community is encouraged to celebrate everything that is good about the Island. There are events happening in towns, communities and villages and you will find a full list of events at www.isleofwightday. com and on pages 12 and 13 you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’, which gives information on events happening throughout the whole month. I hope you all have a wonderful September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans
To help support the move to having safer, quieter streets which is the aim of having our residential areas, Newport centre and Carisbrooke High Street changed to 20 mph, there is an important consultation out at the moment.
ready for October which will be presented at a public meeting, where Island Roads will be also be in attendance. I’ll let you know as soon as the date is confirmed.
As part of my campaign, Newport Parish Council has delivered newsletters across all 7 areas of Newport and Carisbrooke, which contains the survey on 20 mph. Please take the time to fill it out (3 minutes) and return it to the Parish office at the Riverside Centre or Dragonfly. Alternatively, there is an online version which may be more convenient www.freeonlinesurveys.com/s/rBhLWhXb#
I’ve had some interesting discussions recently with different people about how we want Newport to evolve over the next few years. With the changes in the way people shop becoming a threat to many businesses, creating a social space where people want to come is really important. The way traffic, pedestrians and cycles move through the town is an important part of this and I am wondering is there an area of Newport that would benefit from pedestrianisation? It’s been well evidenced that where you have car free areas, people like to go there, it’s good for the economy too. Please let me know your thoughts. The IW Council is currently looking at redesigning some major Newport junctions, that will hopefully take traffic away from the town centre , so it’s a good time to be thinking about this.
If you haven’t had a survey delivered, please contact the office 559119 and we will get one to you. Gathering the evidence from residents is crucial in getting the IWC to reduce the speed of traffic, which along with making our streets safer, also reduces noise and air pollution too. The Isle of Wight Council is starting a major regeneration programme to help create more jobs, better housing, and an even better quality of life for all residents of the Isle of Wight. The Wight We Want is an Island wide survey on how we feel about the future of the island, a chance to shape the thoughts of the Regeneration team at County Hall, this is a great opportunity to influence and speak from your own experience. It’s an online survey available here www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/the_ wight_we_want_survey My street audit , looking at the town from the perspective of pedestrians has commenced and we should have the report 4
Plans for the Christmas Fair are coming together so make a note in your diary for 2nd December, it’s going to be fabulous day and the Christmas Lights will be switched on at 7pm. I have been meeting lots of residents at my weekly surgery at the Quay Arts Centre, Saturday between 9.30 and 10.30, it’s a good way to discuss issues (occasionally I can’t make it due to work and family) I’m also on Facebook and Twitter.
A Holly Maslen Front Cover Here at Island Magazines we have been very lucky to have the wonderfully creative Holly Maslen allow us to use one of her designs on the front cover. I’m sure you will agree that her pen and ink designs are beautiful and she had many to choose from and this one just caught our eye and was just perfect for us. Holly has worked for many years as a marine artist but decided to go back to her childhood style of pen and ink work, drawing and Steve Hadley designing exclusively in black and white.

Over the last five years she has worked on many projects including sixteen murals for the Isle of Wight Zoo, a mural in Sloane Square for fashion designer Charlotte Taylor and an exhibition of drawings at Freud in London to accompany the publication of her illustrated book “Escargot Masquerade & Other Stories”. Smaller scale projects have included t-shirt designs for skate company Wight Trash and her own scarves and pocket squares sold via the international Japanese designer Masato.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 Another month has flown by and the mixed weather conditions have caused a number of our wonderful Summer events to be cancelled although Carisbrooke Castle knights in armour are in full fight as I write, the first sunny day this week!! The field below the Castle is full of cars so there must be a good attendance. Being British we are quite good at the “no such thing as bad weather” philosophy and carry on regardless!
the flooding situation and the condition of the harbour walls, both of these will probably be eligible for grant funding, particularly as the harbour is included in the West Wight Coastal Flood Erosion and Risk Management Strategy. I will continue to follow and contribute to the thoughts that are being shared on this subject.
Thinking of road safety in this area I hope you spotted the 20’s Plenty survey that was distributed by Newport Parish Council (also available online via Facebook and on NPC website). The more people that respond to such things the more success we have doing what is needed. We are still awaiting the results of the residents parking survey….
In my role as Cabinet Member for Heritage and Environment I am now involved with the flood protection planning for the Island and in that capacity I attended a meeting in London of the Southern Regional Flood and Coastal Committee. The purpose of this organisation is, among other things, to manage and communicate flood and coastal erosion links. We on the Island, and more particularly our Carisbrooke area, will have benefitted from this as a result of our flood problems in 2014 and I am pleased to be representing the Island at the source of this support. Our contribution to this organisation is minimal compared to the return that we get from it.
I recently attended a seminar about regeneration opportunities on the Isle of Wight. The event took place at Cowes Yacht Haven it was a well organised and well attended event. I was particularly interested in the discussions that centred around Newport Harbour. It is recognised that Newport Harbour is a prime site for regeneration, but not forgetting its heritage. I went on a conducted tour of the area, at the end of the meeting, with the regeneration director and other interested parties to consider the possible development opportunities which could turn the Harbour in to an iconic waterside development. The regeneration will also include a review of
I have attended a couple of work parties with The Friends of Newport Cemeteries. It is fascinating reading some of the inscriptions on headstones and realising how many unsung heroes are resting there! The group is trying to gather momentum, but they too have been rained off during the summer. I worked with the volunteers at Mountjoy last week and hope to be joining them at Fairlee this coming weekend. Do think about joining the group if you are interested in discovering long lost history and also enjoy spending time outside making a difference! You can contact Newport Parish Clerk for more details. The group has a website: www.foncc.org.uk
The pedestrian crossing on Carisbrooke Road trundles on relentlessly, and now the first consultation letter has been sent to the residents who live closest to the proposed site. Hopefully we are getting nearer!

They now accept all credit cards including American Express and also offer an Island wide delivery service. 1 person delivery is £10 and 2 person delivery is £20 anywhere on the Island. They also do stock clearance for retail businesses that are closing down and Tony is happy to come and discuss your requirements.
