Welcome to the September issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe we are here already as it only feels like a couple of weeks ago that summer started. We have some beautiful landscapes on the Island and there’s nothing better than a field of hay bales, wheat or sweetcorn. Just travel less than five minutes from any town centre and you will be in the midst of the countryside with fields of all varying colours and crops. No doubt like me you have noticed the tractors, trailers and balers out in force going backwards and forwards at all hours of the day while they frantically work to harvest the crops. I’ve always had a keen liking for tractors so I don’t mind coming across them on the roads. I always add extra time to my journey at this time of the year and rather than stress I can relax and enjoy the views over some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country. This month we are giving a BIG shout out on behalf of Feline Welfare and some of their residents who are looking for their forever homes. Read more about them on page 15. I hope you all have a great September and enjoy the last few weeks of summer...

Monthly News Report from Cllr John Hobart. Member for Carisbrooke and Gunville E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 Since last writing I have had a meeting with our Head of Highways to discuss the ongoing problems in and around Carisbrooke. He is aware, as a regular user of the Cedar Hill junction, just how important it is to achieve a crossing or traffic control measure at this point. I am told that this problem is now reaching the top of the action list, which although we cant expect something instantly it does mean that a solution is being looked at with more urgency. I am optimistic that we will get work done... at one point I was beginning to doubt whether it would be feasible. I have also pressed him for reduced speeds through the village and surrounding single track lanes, which he agrees makes total sense. Watch this space as I hope I will be giving some more news in the not to distant future. Whilst talking about roads and traffic I can report that Newport Parish Council has been in discussion with the Isle of Wight Council regarding resident parking schemes. In the first instance the introduction of parking permits will be considered for the centre of Newport and then spread to the outer areas of the town and villages. The decision will be made after a resident vote has taken place and each area will be given the opportunity to vote in due course. There will be an annual charge for residents parking, but it will not be introduced if the majority in each street vote against it. You will ultimately receive a questionnaire and voting slip...but this will not be for a little while in our area.
brought in for identification by the Finds Liaison Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme, our local resident Frank Basford. For those of you interested in Archaeology and Island History the Newport Roman Villa will be open free of charge on the 21st of September (11-3pm) and the Museum of Island History (at the Guildhall) will be open also free of charge 11-3pm on 20th September. The exhibition will tell the tale of two shipwrecks, the Yarmouth Roads wreck and the Pomone lost off the Needles in 1811. Heritage Staff will be there to talk about the wrecks and some artefacts will be available to explore. Frank Basford will again be there to identify any of your archaeological finds. Cllr Martin and I are both delighted that we have now got the new WW1 Commemorative benches on order. One will be installed at the top of Cedar Hill by the bus stop, the other on the Riverbank where the WW1 silhouettes are already in place. We have tried to get a bench in the Cedar Hill location for a very long time, and so are delighted that one will shortly be installed.
There has been concern about the state of Pritchett’s Pond, which is now undergoing a tidy up. Grass cutting will cover a greater area and any overgrowth will be looked at. There has been concern about reduced water levels at the start of summer, strangely I read an article from the same time last year which reflected on the same lack of water. I suspect, as a natural pond surrounded by I had great pleasure in visiting Newport trees, this may be the reason as trees will be Roman Villa for the open day where 400 plus sucking up any water they can during a dry people attended to celebrate the National Festival of Archaeology. Visitors met the whole spell. At the moment I don’t think this is a matter for concern, but we will monitor it. Archaeology Team and over 200 finds were 4
Handmade and bespoke are two words that describe some of the beautiful jewellery made by I.H. Jewellery. Based locally, owner Ian found his passion for jewellery making back in 1996 and then spent a few years obtaining diplomas in fine jewellery and stone setting. Ian works mainly in silver but commissions can be produced in 9 and 18 carat gold. He has thrown out the theory that handmade is far too expensive and has made some eye catching silver stud earrings starting at just ÂŁ16. These will make beautiful gifts for that special someone and throughout his collection of handmade lockets, pendants and rings you will find affordable pieces to suit all budgets. He believes everyone should be able to wear beautiful jewellery and his online shop is open to everyone to browse to look for that perfect piece and if you have a particular item or idea you would like lovingly created then a phone call to Ian is a must. Visit the website at www.ihjewellery.co.uk and see for yourself the outstanding range and quality of products Ian has created. Please also see his main advert for more information.

West Wight Pet Lifeline, based in Freshwater, provides an emergency service for lost, stray or unattended pets in distress across the West Wight area. Although a new organisation here on the Island, the Founders come with over 20 years of experience in large scale front-line animal welfare gained on the mainland. The group also provides an island wide response for certain types of wildlife casualty, these being the larger or more dangerous species that the public would not be expected to handle, such as foxes, badgers and swans. Recent calls that the group have been involved with include the trapping, neutering and return/rehoming of a colony of stray cats around Golden Hill Fort, with four adults and six kittens all having been taken into care over the last few weeks. They have also been involved with searching for lost dogs, scanning found dogs for microchips and reuniting them with their owners and attending seriously sick and injured stray cats in need of immediate veterinary care. Wildlife tasks in the last few weeks have included calls to badgers involved in road traffic accidents, injured fox cubs from Lake and Cowes, several different jobs involving injured swans and ducks at Freshwater, Ryde, Newtown and Sandown and calls to other birds ranging from a poorly cormorant to a woodpigeon stuck behind a fireplace. Their shop and information centre is located on Avenue Road in Freshwater and they’re always happy to meet people and tell them more about the work they do. You can also follow them on Facebook and, for all emergencies, call them on 01983 717740.

Shaping Newport’s data showed research showed that Newport was the heart of the island for business, education, entertainment and the whole parish is 90% rural, so nature is also an important asset. We will be running with a set of 5 themes at first and then developing more. Once the infrastructure for the banners is up, they could be used for other opportunities such as advertising community groups and events. It has been jointly funded by IW Council and Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council. On the 3rd and 17th of September we are hosting our first training session for Newport History Ambassador volunteers, at 30 High Street. Our history walks were very popular earlier in the year and now we want to offer short walks to our visitors that come on coaches. Full training will be given by Richard Smout, IW Council Heritage officer and a selection of routes to suit the needs of the tour. Anyone is welcome to get involved. Check our Facebook page or pop into 30 High Street for more information. 10
All is set for our Christmas event, taking place in St Thomas’s Square on 23rd November, with lots of entertainment planned from 11.30am right through to the evening light switch on and Winter Carnival procession. If you would like a stall please contact Lucy at the parish office 559119. During September, free Mindfulness sessions for young people will be held in the library, this has come The out of the good work being place done by the group that formed for... as a result of the anti-social behaviour we saw in January. Outreach to young people around McDonalds and Church Litten continues to be done by Newport Youth Cafe patrols by the police and the new fencing has also helped.
SOCIALISING
One of the Shaping Newport recommendations was to look at Newport as a destination: rediscovering and celebrating Newport’s identity; creating compelling and distinctive reasons to visit, invest and return. A project that has come to fruition is our series of High Street banners “Newport the place for”. Designed by Newport based company Solent, they feature notable Newport landmarks such as the Minster with an activity that the town excels at.
Plans to improve the pedestrian environment in South Street and Drill Hall Road are moving ahead with assistance from a Hampshire County Council Highways officer who has experience in “place making”. We will also be going on a visit to a successful scheme in Hampshire to gain more knowledge. Our application to become a Heritage High Street Action Zone will be announced in October and meanwhile we will be pursuing other avenues of funding and looking at setting up a buildings trust that could potentially take action on neglected heritage buildings.

Here are just a few of the really special ones that want you to pick up the phone and call so you can come and meet them. Call anytime on 521778 For more in-depth information about each cat you can visit their website www.felinewelfareiow.co.uk. If you are unable to adopt or foster but would still like to help please consider making a donation to them in order that they can keep doing the good work that they do. You will find all the info on the website. Sylvester has had a tough start to his little life, but he is surprisingly confident all things considered. He is used to being with a large group of cats so would like to go to a home with one or two friendly felines. He will be timid initially but with love, patience and time he will become your friend for life. Vinnie is a mainly white boy and is 13 years young. He is a loving boy and needs a caring home in a safe area. He has always been a single pet and would like to keep it this way as he wants his own personal 'human slave’. He is very affectionate and just LOVES human company. He recently had surgery to remove part of his ear flap. He has recovered well and is raring to go !!!! Rupert (tabby/white) is 6 years old and he is very affectionate. He does get on with other cats but he may well take over his humans lock, stock and barrel, so more than one lap is essential!!! Rupert is such a contented boy and wants a home to call his own.
Garfield is looking for a loving, safe new home with someone who really cares. He is 9 years young and he needs a home as an only pet. He has recently had a tough time but he is still happy and content with life and has plenty of love to give.
Meet Lloyd (black/white) and Harry (white/black). These gorgeous boys are 2 years old and they are looking for a loving home where they can stay together. They are neutered and vaccinated and really are ready to start their new life in a safe and loving home. They are REALLY affectionate boys and will make gorgeous pets for their new ‘parents’ or should we say ‘human slaves’ !!!! 15
