Welcome to the September issue which marks a special day for Island Magazines. You can find out more on page 8. I don’t think anyone can say we haven’t had a summer - at the time of writing this we have just come out of a heatwave and I like many others are thankful for the drop in temperature. It was at such an unbearable level but like with many things this year we got through it!!!

I always rave about the wonderful scenic views and the countryside on the island. Just a five-minute trip out of any town centre and you will be greeted by fields and countryside of varying shades from the recently sown to the just harvested.

I like nothing more than watching the tractors and machinery working the land, there is something calming about watching them cut, dry, turn and bale hay. I know some people do not like being behind tractors and trailers on the road but I think they are a great sight to see and at the end of the day they are only doing their job like we all are. This month’s issue is packed with news and information. I am always happy to receive emails and phone calls from readers and if you have anything to share with others please feel free to get in touch. I hope you all enjoy reading this issue and thank you to all advertisers, contributors and readers for supporting Island Magazines. I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans continued
I’ve responded to the IW Council’s consultation on parking in Newport, in my role as Chair of NCCC and local member for Newport Central, which has most of the parking issues! I have reiterated the need for more space for pedestrians, free half hour parking in car parks, slower speeds through town and better signage. Residents parking has now started so those streets that suffer most from commuter parking will have their schemes in soon. It’s very disappointing that at a recent meeting with the IW Council Cabinet (leadership) they said that despite local support for 20mph in town, because it’s not something they don’t support, they won’t back our local call for a safer environment for residents, students, workers and visitors I feel this is completely unacceptable and the Vice Chair and I have requested a meeting to get this sorted out. Sad to see 2 more stores closing in town and Shaping Newport is keeping up to date with monitoring this situation and the High Street Heritage Action Zone will soon be delivering the elements of the project aimed to halt the decline.

The September issue marks Island Magazines 10th Anniversary and never in my wildest dreams did I think back in 2010 that it would grow from just the one area to seven, covering pretty much the whole of the Island. The very first area was East Cowes & Whippingham and this was because at the time it was my hometown and had a real community feel. It was so well received amongst residents that I launched the Cowes, Gurnard & Northwood area in November 2011. 2012 was a very busy year and this was the year Island Magazines really stood out and a further three areas were added, Sandown & Shanklin launched in February, Ryde & Wootton in July and finally in October 2012 Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth. These five areas kept me very busy for the next couple of years and then I started to receive requests from Newport residents asking if I was going to be producing a magazine for their area? How could I refuse... and Newport & Carisbrooke was launched in April 2014. Fast forward 4 years until September 2018 and the Bembridge & St Helens area was launched. There is real community spirit in these two villages and as this is what the magazine is all about it, it was only natural that this area would become the seventh area to be added to the family. I am lucky that I can say I love my job; I love what the magazine has become and how it has taken shape. When I sit down and think about the people involved each month it’s quite astonishing... Firstly, you have myself, all the wonderful advertisers, news contributors which are made up of Councillors and Parish/Town Councils, some of them I have been working with since the start, then the team of printers who print and pack it every month and then all the wonderful distributors who kindly allow me to fly in and out of their premises every month (now wearing a mask) and deliver a pile to them which they kindly display ready for the thousands of readers who come and pick up a copy to take home and read. Without them all playing their part there really wouldn’t be a local community magazine and we all work together like well-oiled cogs. I hope everyone is looking forward to the next 10 years of Island Magazines, as I know I am!

News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 Whilst I’m sure we like hot weather the early part of August really was too much for me!! I was delighted to get a bit of rain after the heat....although I think we need a lot more. I understand that we not yet out of the woods as far as a hose pipe ban is concerned. The reservoirs and many rivers are running low and, for us on the Island, importing more than 25% of our water from the River Test on the mainland we are quite vulnerable when the water table drops too low! I’m sure that everyone is aware of the dried out yellow that the fields and gardens are becoming.... everything is tinder dry!! And yet people are still having bonfires! We have already seen in the local news shed fires and house fires that have sprung from out of control bonfires. Not to mention acres of woodland and heathland alight just the other side of the Solent! Please, Please think before burning....it’s not advisable whilst everywhere is so dry, and not pleasant for the neighbours on a hot day/evening to have someone else’s acrid smoke coming in through their open windows! It’s great news that yet another species of dinosaur has been discovered on the Island. Vectaerovenator as it is to be known put in a timely appearance as our museum opened again in a Covid 19 secure way. We must remember how important this museum is, it houses a fantastic collection of palaeontology, it is an accredited museum and is internationally recognised for its excellence. I popped over there the day of the ‘big reveal’ and was delighted 12
to see a good number of people enjoying not only the fascinating finds, but the cool atmosphere on a very hot day! It was sad, whilst in the area, to survey the drying out of boating lake near to the museum. I’m sorry that the carp were demised, but fairly certain that they shouldn’t have been there in the first place as the river is such a distance away. The lake was never designed to support wildlife, particularly freshwater fish and the pollution of the water from fish and wildfowl excrement would it make a fairly unhealthy environment in this very shallow, stagnant concrete bottomed pond. It’s only access to water was, at one time, from the sea making the lake brackish and more suited to flounders. Now the only water that fills the lake is rain....far from ideal, particularly in our near drought conditions this summer. While I was in the area, I also visited the Henry Cotton Pavilion built in the early 30’s for the pitch and putt golf course at Browns. The Pavilion went on to house some huge electrical generators, which played part in the PLUTO project during the war, and are now being restored, as has been the Pavilion. For anyone unsure about PLUTO it was a pipeline under the ocean which carried fuel to our troops for the initial landings on D Day. I have to say, in just one small area of Sandown, there is a wealth of history and heritage (the zoo is housed in one of Palmerstone’s fortifications as well!). We are so lucky on this Island to have such amazing heritage!

Follow the Sun During lockdown many of us took to our gardens and enjoyed the pleasure of growing a variety of plants, veg and fruit. One plant that was really popular with both adults and children was the humble sunflower. You don’t have to go far to see one of these cheery plants peering over the hedge or fence.
THIS SIZE ADVERT COULD BE YOURS FOR JUST £16 For more info email islandmagazines@gmail.com or call 07880 587931
These wonderful flowers can reach heights of up to 12ft with heads bigger than your hands, unless of course you are growing the dwarf variety which has a height of about 2ft. Sunflowers are known for being “An excellent team “happy” flowers, offering an making them the invaluable service” perfect gift to bring joy NEW! Book online www.mobilevetsurgery.co.uk to someone’s (or your) day. Stress-free Islandwide “Friendly & reliable professional yet Home Visits & very caring” Central Vet Surgery Young sunflowers track the sun, also referred to as heliotropism. A young sunflower’s face follows the sun from Keyhole CT sunrise (east) to sunset Surgery Scans (west) every day and repeats the cycle until Watergate Rd, Newport, PO30 1XP 01983 212999 maturity. As sunflowers reach maturity, it behaves differently. The overall growth of the plant slows down gradually, the circadian rhythm (their internal biological clock) ensures that the plant reacts more strongly to sunlight early in the morning than the afternoon or evening. A mature sunflower does not move with the sun throughout the day; rather, it just faces east. I feel that during lockdown the island experienced a ‘sunflower boom’… we have another few months to wait to see if a ‘baby boom’ also occurred!!!!! 15
120 years of Isle of Wight retailing comes to an end Beardsalls has been a household name on the Isle of Wight since 1901. Their first retail shop started on Shanklin Esplanade by John Beardsall. This family business has waxed and waned over the years, through 2 World Wars, storms, floods and numerous recessions. The retailer has always developed it’s offering to match the times, but now alas, with the advent of internet shopping and the near total collapse of high street business due to the Covid pandemic the time has come to shut its retail doors for ever. Four generations of the Beardsalls family have been custodians of the business. John’s son Bernard inherited the Esplanade shop upon his death and soon expanded into another unit in Regent Street, Shanklin, quickly becoming the Island’s very first ‘lending Library’. Bernard’s premature death meant that his widow and youngest son, Michael took over the reins and were soon joined by Mike’s wife Iris and his elder brother Peter. The shop expanded taking on new premises in Ventnor and developing the range of goods to include books, greeting cards and photocopy services. In 1999 Michael’s son Toby joined the team and further expanded into Ryde, Sandown and Newport. Toby Beardsall says “We have been on an exciting journey with Beardsalls. Some of our long standing loyal customers who dealt with my parents in the 60’s and 70’s have supported us through good times and bad, but now we must move on and develop a new business for the modern age” Beardsalls move into printing has enabled them to build on the heritage of the Beardsalls brand, maintaining the core belief of great customer service. Its Print Studio in Orchard Street, Newport opened in 2018 and will remain open and continue to develop services as Beardsalls has always done in the past. Printing is done on site and ranges from wrapping and signwriting vans to printing the magazine that you are reading now. Beardsalls retail may be gone, but the name should not be forgotten.
