W
elcome to the September issue of Island Magazines and as you know I always like to give a little mention about the weather...
In this last month alone, we have had a heat wave that at times was unbearable and we’ve also had monsoon season with serious flooding across the Island. To say it’s been unpredictable is an understatement. Let’s see what September brings us! It seems that almost everyday somebody is being scammed and we have teamed up with IWASP (Isle of Wight Against Scams Partnership) to bring you the latest scams that are doing the ‘rounds’. There are some unscrupulous criminals trying every possible way to get people to part with their money. On page 6 you can find some of the latest scams reported to Trading Standards. In this issue you will find the regular news reports for your area and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12 and 13 will keep you informed of local and community events happening across the Island. If you have an event coming up, please feel free to send us the details via any of the means below. We have some great advertisers and as always please support them as it’s been a rough 18 months for many local businesses. I hope you have a great September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month

Thankfully, I have been able to satisfy my fix of tractors by tuning into the much talked after TV show, Clarkson’s Farm. When this was first brought to my attention I ummed and ahhed about watching it as I was no Jeremy Clarkson fan… However, I can be the first to admit I was wrong, and this is probably the best show I have seen in a long, long time. I take my hat off to farmers across the nation as I have learnt so much about farming, more than I could ever have imagined, much of this is thanks to Clarkson’s side kick, experienced young farmer Kaleb Cooper who also brought the show to life. I won’t ruin it by telling you anything more. It is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video and I rate it ‘ten thumbs up’.

Trading Standards have some more scams for you to be aware of. Residents have reported scams from the following – • A call from someone claiming to be from TV insurance, stating that their insurance had expired and it needed to be renewed. They claimed the resident owed £180 but they didn’t have any insurance and had recently changed their television. The caller then insisted that they needed to pay and they couldn’t pay in instalments, they went as far as to demand they use a credit card, go overdrawn or borrow money from a friend. Luckily the resident reported this to a trusted contact who confirmed that this was definitely a SCAM. • We have received reports of callers ringing residents to say that they want to check their meters, implying they are from SSE. On checking the number online there are large numbers of complaints about it. If in doubt check with SSE to confirm if the call is genuine • Action Fraud has received over 700 reports from members of the public about fake emails purporting to be from the NHS. The emails claim to be able to provide people with a “digital passport” that “proves you have been vaccinated against COVID-19”. These emails are fake, and the links within them lead to genuine-looking websites that steal your personal and financial information. Remember, the vaccine is free of charge. At no point will you be asked to pay. • Emails have been received purporting to be from the HMRC stating ‘ if you do not reply to this email with the details required, you will not be eligible for any refunds from HMRC’ – this is a SCAM and legitimate organisations will never contact you in this way. You can check if a phone number is a scam – put the number that called you into google and select the website who-called.co.uk this will tell you if the number is definitely or likely to be a scam and quite often others who have received it will comment on their experience. News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans I think we are all so relieved that the road works to improve St Georges Way are drawing to a close. Newport residents have to live day in day out with the amount of traffic flowing through the town and consequent road lay out improvements that inevitably come our way. Thank you for your forbearance. The Highways team are doing an island speed review this year and all the councillors in Newport will be backing the pledge for 20 mph in the town centre and residential roads. Please get in contact with Hol-ly Deacon if you can volunteer for Community Speed Watch in Newport holly.deacon.17798@hampshire.pnn. police.uk The crossing point at Lidl/Riverway is still a priority to resolve and Cllr Garratt and I continue to press for resolution here and of course at Mill Street. It’s good to see that pedestrians are now being given greater priority in the Highway Code, so this should trickle down into road design. Isle of Wight Day is again coming to Newport this month, Saturday 11th of September and will be based in St Thomas’s Square and at Carisbrooke Castle where there is just £1 admission. Market Days will be running medieval themed activities and of course a market with local food and crafts. The Saturday markets are proving to be a great success with each week different activities and live music, please keep an eye out on social media outlets for forthcoming events. 8
We are still without a Post Office and residents are quite rightly raising it with me as an urgent matter to deal with. I think we need to look for a community not for profit solution, as the business model the Post Office run is not that attractive as a stand-alone business, but part of an existing store does work as it brings a lot of footfall . Councils however are not prohibited from running them directly, so we need to think more creatively about how we can return the post office to the town centre. The Old Post Office building in the High Street – formerly Prezzo - has had a licensing application from a restaurant/bar operation, so that will be a big boon for that part of the High Street if it reopens. The former Pizza Express is also awaiting a licence to become a cafe/bar, but local residents above and opposite have many concerns about public nuisance as a result of the new business. I hope there will be mitigation put in place to ensure the quality of life for residents is not impacted unduly. Shaping Newport is currently gathering information and ideas for local parking solutions to help sup-port the High Street, all the partners are involved and Newport Business Association canvassed 75 local businesses for their ideas. If you add them all up, it would cost the IWC about £800,000 in lost revenue for a year and in a time when this revenue is badly needed to support Adult Social Care and Children’s Services, it’s going to be impossible to run with all the suggestions. However, we do need some level-ling up with Ryde and other towns on the island, so a compromise will be sought.

Thank you for your patience during what seems like never ending roadworks!!!
