We have a special front cover this month and the star of it is Rookley and his mum Toggie. This little dancing, prancing kid is part of the 50 strong herd of Isle of Wight Dairy Goats, who reside at and belong to The Green Barn. The herd isn’t complete yet as at the time of writing this there are still a couple of mums waiting to deliver. They are the only commercial dairy goat farm on the Island and these little beauties are responsible for producing the freshest and tastiest goats cheese, milk and fudge on the Island. The Green Barn Isle of Wight Dairy Goats is open to the public and you too can come and see the goats with the kids. The day we went to visit we were lucky enough to have cuddles with some newborns and they are just the cutest. Obviously Rookley wanted to show us how entertaining he could be and was doing some leaps, jumps and generally playing around in his paddock much to amusement of us all. You can easily while away an hour or more just watching these fascinating animals. Whilst visiting the goats you can also visit their onsite farm shop for some wonderful hand crafted gifts as well as the delectable delights of fudge, cheese and milk. They are situated on the Main Road, Bouldnor, PO41 0XN and are open every day.

Report from IW Councillor for Ryde North East - Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde, PO33 3RP. Tel 07792 670771 E: wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide I recently attended the Environment Agencies “Risk Management Options Presentation” at the Simeon Arms, the local fact finding presentation was widely publicised and received a good level of attendance. There were photographs and data from past local flood History depicting incidents from 1909 until our last incident 2013. The option scenario boards showed outcomes and costs from doing nothing to spending over 6 million on joint ultimate fix solutions.
£1,325 then 0 properties would flood in a 1 in 2 year return with only 37 properties under threat of flooding every 1 in 100 year period. This was the preferred option and the Environment Agency can get the £5,390 from Government and need to find £612k external funding from Isle of Wight Council, the EA need a firm commitment from IWC for this needed funding by October this year for them to be able to progress the project and start implementing the required engineering works by Autumn 2017.
Thank you to all the local residents who took Basically if we do nothing 196 local properties part and attended this event. will regularly flood in a 1 to 2 year return period along with a massive 327 properties The memorial Gardens landscaping and flooding during a 1 in 100 year return period. memorial reinstatement works are now almost completed, the memorial plaque itself In option two the scenario is we do the is now erected at the Southern end of the minimum (like we are currently doing) this Gardens and I will be working with Southern would cost in maintenance over 100 years Water & Ryde Town Council requesting an £2,675k and 18 properties would regularly official opening which will be sometime in flood in a 1 to 2 year return period with 268 April. local properties flooding in a 1 in 100 year period. Report from Wayne Whittle Continued arranging & funding the Plaque. The Western Gardens and Pier were a special place for Anthony as he used to play down there as a child and even made his first short film “A Little Like Drowning” on Ryde Pier and Western Gardens with his then 10 year old brother Dominic. I’m sure the Western Gardens are a special place for us all and now particularly as its crowned with a dedicated lasting Memorial to one of Ryde’s fairest Sons. And finally... the Bestival Ryde Slide event will be back in Union Street on the 17th July, lookout for the official press release in mid April.

Ryde District Heritage Centre
Take a step back in time and delve into the past 200 years of Ryde. From the integral Ice Well to the 1830 Ryde Town Hall Foundation Trowel. A history told through pictures and artefacts including a collection of old school photos. Who will you recognise? A whole history to see and discover
Open Monday - Saturday 11am - 4pm
Niton - Monday 9.15am- General
www.HistoricRydeSociety.com Sitting right on our doorsteps, in the centre of the Town, is the doorway that opens to discover over 200 years of local Ryde history. Not many people know about this place and it’s now time for it to be fully discovered.
Situated in the Royal Victoria Arcade in Union Street, Ryde is the Ryde District Heritage Centre. This is no ordinary museum as this is dedicated to the life of Ryde. With hundreds of artefacts and thousands of photos which all tell a story stretching back over 200 years. See for yourself the trowel that was used to lay the foundations of the Ryde Town Hall in 1830. Did you know that Ryde had an airport? I certainly didn’t. Learn about the hovercraft and look through the large collection of old school photos. You might even find yourself smiling back at you…. There are two video screens showing films of diverse subjects and another screen which has over 7,000 images of people, places and things. You can research your family or the history of your house. Learn about the integral ice well and whilst you are there have a peek at the Donald McGill ‘saucy seaside’ postcard section, ooh la la…. The centre is open daily from 11am – 4pm on Monday to Saturday and such excellent value at just £3. The volunteers who run this place are happy for you to browse at your leisure but are also available to give you any assistance and guidance that you require. 9
News Report from Cllr Ian Stephens - Ryde West - Lantern Cottage, The Orchard, Pellhurst Road, Ryde, Email:- ian.stephens@iow.gov.uk Mobile:-07970 009523 The number of homeless people on the Island has risen over the last year, and raises concerns with regard to the rise in November of more people in temporary accommodation. Families who are enduring such situations are living under considerable stress, and this also can reflect in more call on our hard pressed social care. The situation gives rise to a spiralling cost to the Isle of Wight Council and one which is a priority to address. I have taken on the Executive role of Council assets and Inward Investment, and I have now started to focus on the way in which we can utilise assets to look at building and leasing property rather than selling assets for a once only cash receipt. I have met with Academies Enterprise Trust (AET) and discussed the concerns put forward by local residents with regard to the new build of Ryde Academy. The planning application will be heard by the IWC Planning Committee in the near future and it is preferable to have queries answered prior to the submission. I feel that the concerns have been put forward and answered, however assurances on the construction, which is on the same footprint as exists, need to be adhered to and I will be monitoring the situation as appropriate. The planning application leaves the recreation ground/sports field with no building encroachment.
A more simplified grant application is in the offing, however we are realistically looking to the changes coming through in 2018. Unfortunately this work seems to take so much time to sort through and bring to fruition. As a Ryde Town Councillor I was pleased to note that the public toilets have been taken over by the Town Council. I can’t help but to think back to the days when Ryde had a Borough Council and were masters/mistresses of their own destiny... are we going full circle? There’s no better way than having local management, and accountability. I have made representation with regard to the number of potholes in my ward of Ryde West, and also added the necessity of some areas of Ryde’s main routes to be inspected. We need to make sure that as we come through from winter to spring unacceptably dangerous potholes are swiftly dealt with. The hazards are an obvious road safety issue, whilst they also give an uncaring appearance to our town. Armed Forces Day will move to a new venue at the Eastern Gardens, and will be an opportunity for us to pay tribute to those serving and those who have served our country. The change of venue will give an opportunity for the parade to march without encountering the speed ramp and controls of the North Walk as it progresses along the road by the Castle and round into the Pavilion flagpole... all to be confirmed!
I was invited to assist in the formulation of the new funding strategy of Arts Council England, where I was pleased to reinforce the call for funding functions within libraries Why am fighting for a fair deal for our Island and support the funding of individual artists. and its’ people?? Because we deserve better
10
Report from Cllr Ian Stephens continued and although we are bracketed within the so called affluent South East we have unique challenges. A few years ago we had special recognition of our severance by sea... we are now not recognised as an Island in some Central Government circles. Absurd? Of course it is!! That reason alone makes it unacceptable to sit back and accept a few crumbs when our rightful share is a chunk of the cake. Portsmouth had Michael Fallon as their Minister and it was he that told me that we would not receive All Island Assisted Area status....whilst Portsmouth Dockyard and HMS Daedalus received Assisted Area Status!! At Least we set the trend.

The Importance of Colour as We Grow Older With older age comes a greater likelihood of eyesight conditions, as well as being on medication, having a form of dementia, and perhaps all of these things combined. What the eye sees, the brain must interpret, and this can vary given different circumstances, type and progression of dementia, and abilities. Understanding that an older person with or without dementia will probably perceive their surroundings differently, is a good starting point for the design of living environments. Good design can help enormously in making it easier to interpret and navigate a building in safety, and the use of colour and contrast can be used in different ways to assist in this.
Contrast is the key to vision.
Blue – restful and has a calming effect, a popular choice for sitting areas and bedrooms
High contrast - When we want to draw attention to something important, greater contrast helps to highlight it. For example, a coloured and contrasting toilet seat helps with positioning; stairs can be made safer with a contrasting strip along the front edge; grab rails can be located; the outlines of furniture can be seen more clearly
Green – the most restful colour, also a popular choice for sitting areas and bedrooms, plus waiting rooms and clinical areas to help reduce stress Red – increases brain wave activity, can stimulate the appetite and produce adrenalin. It is frequently specified in dining areas but dementia patients can have problems seeing the red end of the colour spectrum Orange – this warm colour has a similar effect to red
If there is no contrast, objects cannot easily be seen and differentiated. Contrast is vital in being able to comprehend the environment and understand the features and elements that we need to use in our ordinary daily lives. As we age we lose the ability to differentiate colours clearly, our perception of depth diminishes, there is a loss of visual acuity, we have less spatial awareness and our sensitivity to contrast lowers. Without good contrasts, the world becomes more hazy, we struggle more and more to make sense of it and we function in life with less confidence.
Low contrast - The opposite effect can be achieved by lowering the contrast. e.g. a white door on a white wall. This is also a useful way of making floorings safer, by keeping to a single colour over different floor finishes, or making changes in the floor colour gradually rather than suddenly. It is the sudden contrast which can make the floor levels look uneven, like a step, and this can cause hesitation and unsteadiness which can lead to falls.
Violet – this combination of colours from opposite ends of the light spectrum does not appear to have a consistent effect on mood A large or busy pattern can confuse the eye, and again cause hesitation if it looks like an Yellow – a stimulating colour, ideal for obstacle or a hole. Shiny finishes can look activity areas, can make small rooms appear unsafe, so a matte flooring is preferable and larger. people can walk more safely. 14
