Dear Readers Welcome to the April issue and I can’t quite believe where this last month has gone! Signs of Spring are popping up everywhere, with bursts of colour from daffodils, crocuses and spring flowers on hedges and banks all around the Island. The Island is coming alive again and many tourist attractions will be opening their doors as the Easter seasons begins. There are a variety of events happening across the Island during April, and you will find details of these on pages 10 and 11. As the weather is getting warmer and whilst many people are taking this opportunity to sit and relax in the sun please can I urge you to read the article on page 8 to ensure you stay in the best of health. I hope you enjoy this months issue which is packed with news and information and I look forward to catching up with you next month and I hope you all have a Happy Easter.

News Report from IW Councillor for Ryde North East - Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde, PO33 3RP. E. wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide I’m happy to say that the required Isle of Wight Council contribution towards the much needed Environment Agency Monkton Mead flood prevention engineering works in excess of £700k was included in the Capital program contained in the budget. I look forward to our coming flood group meeting where we can hear the next steps towards the implementation of the scheme. The Ryde Town Council budget contains a funding allocation to provide a new Harbour Masters Cabin, this is good news as the current portacabin was only supposed to be temporary when the Harbour was first built. Let’s hope we get a nice architecturally complimentary cabin. Its good to see the scruffy Rose Garden fence has gone that once ran along the southern side of the railway line between the Esplanade Station and the tunnel, this is being renewed with funding acquired by the Ryde Town Council. The new fence will include a section of railings that will enable visitors arriving on the Hovercraft to see what’s beyond the car park and it’s hoped it will encourage them to explore our Esplanade and Town before getting into Taxis (as most currently do). It may be an idea to provide clearer signs indicating Town to the West Beaches to the East for the same reasons. I note the Royal York scaffolding has been erected and I’m encouraged to see the 4
owner is honouring his promise to repair and paint the exterior as many local residents have suffered for too long in its decaying shadows. It was only a year ago when I met with the owner and the Executive Member in an informal meeting in Yelfs where after a 2 hour meeting we were promised positive action. The refurbishment should bring this past Art Deco Hotel and landmark up to visitor expected quality and standard and meeting the new holiday market requirements is essential to its survival as a property and business. I have discussed the effect of pedestrianisation to the High Street with residents living in Anglesea Street who have concerns on access to their properties if the High Street is closed during opening times. I understand the Ryde Town Council planning Committee were considering trialing yellow lines in the first instance to see if that stopped the current day time unauthorised parking and it would only be necessary to provide a physical barrier to stop access if this didn’t work. If this happened Anglesea Street would probably have to become closed at the Victoria Square end and made two way for resident access and parking only. I note AEW have put Ryde Arena on the market for 3.5 million I think they have probably launched this a month or so too early as this price tag is more suited for an

A Feathered Friend The last few issues we have had the pleasure of sharing pictures on the front cover from some local talented amateur photographers and this months issue is no exception. The fabulous front cover picture was taken at Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve by Viki Taylor who has been very lucky to get regular close up photos of these feathered friends as well as the red squirrels who are also frequent visitors. Viki is Island born but lived away for a while, returning in 2011. As well as having a love for fur and feather Viki has a passion for landscapes, seascapes and event photography such as Round the Island Race, Cowes Week and air displays, particularly if the Red arrows are involved. Viki’s husband rides trial bikes and she has become the unofficial Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club photographer, spending weekends (sometimes in the mud) capturing the riders as they manoeuvre through the courses.

Fake it - don’t bake it! Cancer... it’s a devastating disease and can attack anyone and skin cancer alone comes in many forms and some people don’t realise that Melanoma is the most aggressive and deadliest. You see a mole that may have changed colour or size, and you get it checked out and they remove it, and if you are very lucky this might be the end of your cancer story but for many this is just the beginning. Local business owner, partner, mum, daughter and friend, Debbie Keynes first noticed a lump on her head and her nurse’s intuition kicked in and she sought medical help and was told that she must do an agonising 4 week wait to see if any changes occurred. Nothing good came from waiting and after lots of tests, biopsies and anxious waiting Debbie was diagnosed with Melanoma. She has now undergone surgery to remove the cancer along with 37 lymph nodes, Debbie’s head and neck resembles a patchwork quilt boasting a total of 56 stitches. She is a constant visitor to the hospital, racking up well over 20 appointments. Her long brunette hair hides the bald patch that will always be a constant reminder of what she has fought and what she will continue to fight every day of her life. Debbie has recently had another CT scan and the Melanoma has spread and she is now receiving immunotherapy every 3 weeks at Southampton General – so her battle is still very real but she is continuing to fight it... 8
Debbie knew that pushing her doctor and specialists to ensure she got the diagnosis as fast as she could would greatly increase her chances and she insists that anybody who has a lump, changes in a mole or anything which could be a trigger to seek medical advice immediately and not to ignore it. International Health organisations agree that sun exposure and sun beds are the main causes of skin cancers. The recent increase in the number of people taking last minute cheap holidays abroad may contribute to the rising number of melanoma cases. People who receive the highest exposures to the sun have about 20-35% higher risks of melanoma, but sun burn at any age doubles the risk of malignant melanoma. Help yourself by using lots of sun cream, staying in the shade and wearing a hat. Remember the sun is at its deadliest between 11am and 3pm. Debbie is in a support group and she has watched fellow sufferers lose the battle and some of these people have been in their 20’s and 30’s so its not a mature persons disease – cancer has no age limit. Her business DSK Training is an Island based company which specialises in health and social care training and Debbie has taken on a challenge to educate as many people as possible to bring awareness to this deadly disease and is offering training courses to businesses and groups, especially hairdressers and beauticians who may see the signs before anyone else. The profit from these courses will go directly to Melanoma UK. For more information and contact details go to www.dsktraining.co.uk

A Pain in the Back! By Jessica Garbett of Yinspire Yoga Lower back pain is one of the commonest ailments in the UK, accounting for many days off work – and our modern head forward slumped lifestyles looking at screens, tablets and phones, lolling on sofas, or peering over our car bonnets don’t help this. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence has been investigating back pain recently, and arrived at the conclusion that in many cases pain killers aren’t effective. What do they think is the most effective treatment? In their words, “stretching, strengthening, aerobics or yoga” It goes without saying that any sudden onset back pain should be checked by a medical professional as there could be a myriad of causes, but in many cases Yoga, Pilates or similar is likely to be a help not a hindrance. However choose your class wisely – some very energetic classes may do more harm than good – make sure your chosen teacher has experience or training with backs, and understands your condition. They may recommend a private class or consultation first, or can suggest which timetabled class works for you.

News Report from Michael Lilley - Green Councillor for Ryde East Ward. Email: michaellilleyiow@gmail.com – call/text 07769551578 Dog Fouling – the Muddie Campaign The Muddie Campaign (named after my own Westie) is continuing and more and more local residents are reporting dog-fouling. I am contacting Island Roads and Environmental Officers, who are coming out to clean up and putting up signs. I am highlighting dog owners who do pick up their dog’s mess but then throw the bags into hedges and green areas. The bags often hang from tress. Please take the bags home or put in bins. I am campaigning for more bins in the area. Age Friendly Island – Ryde Age Friendly Coordinator. I hosted an Age Friendly Island Event at St. John’s Church in February which brought together a range of organisations and residents concerned about the needs of older adults. The issue for many is the physical reality of simply getting to facilities and events which they need whether getting to the shops, GP or simply having fun. For many there is a lack of knowledge of what help and activities are on offer, and how do you access it. I am now working with IW Age Friendly Campaign and IW Age UK in discussions with Ryde Town Council how we can develop more effective coordination that will benefit older adults in Ryde.
all directors and shareholders to tell them the story and ask them to give the lease to the local community and that people should come before profits. If the lease is given to the group, I have already linked them to major social investors and my vision is that an Ice Rink and multi-use recreational centre is opened which would create local jobs. Save Westridge Farm – The Campaign goes on! In February, Isle of Wight County Council Planning Committee voted by 8 to 1, against the planning application to build 80 homes on fields at Westridge Farm/Hope Road. Planning Officers called this decision back as they felt Councillor’s reasons for refusing the application needed re-considering as they were recommending the building went ahead. I had written to all the councillors, Ryde Town Council was unanimous against it, there were over 200 objections, so it was good to see Councillors listening. On the 28th February, the Planning Committee re-considered and it became obvious that Councillors had conflicting information. I had raised the issue with others and have written to all planning committee members on the importance of the farm and land staying as a dairy farm, the fact the farmer was now selling milk and eggs to the local community, the wildlife that thrived on the land including the dormouse, and all the access issues. Councillors voted to defer their decision so they could get more information about the farm. I call all local residents to support the farmer and keep house building off this green space.
Ice Arena Campaign – Raiders of the Lost Rink – People before Profit I am continuing my support to the Ryde Arena Community Action Group (www.racag. org) who are campaigning strongly to get the present lease owners to hand over the lease. The lease is owned by an international company, AEW, who want £3 million for the lease which is grossly overvalued. A coach of 50 young skaters and ice hockey players (the 20 MPH, Speed Watch and Making our Roads Raiders) demonstrated outside AEW offices Safer I hosted a Public Meeting with the during half-term. I have written to Police at St.John’s Church on 2nd March

News Report from Michael Lilley Continued 2017 and 20 attended. CPO Stephen Hall demonstrated the Speed Watch scheme were local residents train to operate a Speed Watch sign which shows drivers the speed they are going and enables registration numbers to be taken down. The idea is to collect evidence and make drivers aware of local speed limits. 9 local people have come forward to train as volunteers. Everyone at the meeting agreed to a proposal to have the whole of Ryde East have a 20MPH area, and a call for Island Roads to do a school time full road survey, and initiate a Speed watch campaign. There was particular concern about the roads around Oakfield School and the dangers there of an accident happening. Other residents across Ryde have called for a whole Ryde 20 MPH scheme as well.

Keep knitting... You may remember in last month’s issue we did a feature on knitted squares and strips for animals in need. Organiser of this wonderful cause is Samantha English and she has had a good response from the article and would like to say a big “thank you to you all” We still need you to keep knitting and crocheting, as there are still plenty animals who need a blanket. So far Samantha has had donations of over 550 squares and has sewn together a total of 57 blankets and has sent parcels to over 13 places so far including, Cats Protection, PDSA, Ability Dogs, Friends of the Animals, Manchester Cats and Dogs home and NWAT as well as others. She has received certificates, emails and letters of thanks for all the hard work put into these blankets of love.

Fakeaways are the New Takeaways We are all beginning to understand the importance of healthy eating and this doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite indian takeaway - instead you need a fakeaway... why should you miss out on a little of what you fancy. The advantages are you can make them healthier and they are good for the wallet. This month I have called upon the experts and below you will find a mouthwatering curry recipe from Four Seasons Cookery Academy. Turkey Korma© 2 Turkey Breast Steaks cut into cubes 1 Onion – diced Good Squeeze Garlic Puree/4 cloves fresh Garlic finely chopped 1 large Tablespoons Korma Spice Blend 1 Chicken Stock Cube – preferably low salt - (crumbled) www.cookeryacademy.co.uk 1 handful dessicated Coconut 1 small Tub Half-fat Crème Fraiche 1 Red Apple – cored – cut into wedges and then halved – (peel on) Gently fry the Onions and Garlic in a smidge of Olive Oil until Onions are soft. Add Korma Spice and cook gently for a couple of minutes. *Always cook spices early on in the dish to allow flavours to develop*. Add Turkey and cook until browned (approx 8 minutes). Keep stirring so that it doesn’t stick to the pan If it starts to stick, add a little of the Crème Fraiche to avoid adding more oil. Add the Apples, Stock Cube and Creamed Coconut and cook gently for approximately 5 – 10 minutes until Apples have slightly softened. Remove pan from the heat and stir through the Crème Fraiche. Re-heat gently and serve with Wholegrain Rice. Curries are always thought of as being ‘fattening foods’ and indeed they can be. But by reducing the fat content in this dish by using Olive Oil – Monosaturate - and only a little at that and using Turkey which is one of the healthiest meats available – and less expensive than Chicken. We have used a low fat version Call: 01983 754666 of Crème Fraiche to add at the end instead • Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) of Cream and we’ve also added Apples and Onions in the recipe as well as part of our FIVE • Electrical Wiring Testing & Alterations A DAY. Instead of accompanying the Curry • Telephone Sockets, Data Cabling & Faulting with fat laden Naan bread, try brushing a Wholemeal Pitta Bread with a little Garlic Olive • and More Full Island Coverage Oil and placing in a hot oven for a few minutes.
