Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines and what a month it has been!! Some of us finally got our wish and the whole Island experienced the joy of snow, but I am pleased it didn’t stick around for long and hopefully now we can await the arrival of Spring and let’s hope we don’t see too many April showers. The Island is slowly coming back to life and seasonal businesses and places of interest are opening their doors to correspondence with this years early Easter. You can read all about this months front cover on page 11 and if you are looking for events happening across the Island then the Dates for your Diary section on pages 12, 13 and 14 will keep you busy. Inside you will find the latest news and information from contributors and adverts from great local businesses who will always appreciate your custom. Please support them and use local where possible. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide The Environment Agencies contractors started work on the Harbour Beach on the 5th of March, equipment and supporting infrastructure was put in place around the site a few weeks before. Part of the Harbour Beach, Cornwall Slip and pumping station will remain fenced off through out the project, this includes the removal of the Sand Park. Residents have complained that there were signs directing them to the sand park at Appley but found it closed, leisure services have now asked the EA to replace the signs to direct family’s to the play park in Simeon Recreation Ground and are preparing to open the Appley Sand Park for the Easter holidays (weather permitting). The outfall diversion engineering works are to end in July to clear the Beach for Pride and the 2018 summer season at the latest, but hopefully without complications and a fair wind its hoped the project will be completed sooner. Beach Soccer have agreed terms with IWC and will be occupying the area just East of Appley Tower more permanently for the summer Beach Soccer season. #RydeSlide will be in Union Street on Sunday 22 July, all proceeds will be divided between Aspire Ryde, Waterside Pool, Ryde Arena Group, Inshore Rescue and Brainy Bunch (Fire Service Charity). You can pre book your tickets for a place on the slide online at rydeslide.net and pick the time slot to suit your day.

Bringing the Surgery to your Doorstep by Dan Forster The Mobile Vet provides an Islandwide veterinary service in their bespoke mobile vehicles and also have a fully equipped veterinary surgery at the IOW Pet Centre, Watergate Road, Newport.
‘Continuation of care with a small, friendly practice’
New services on offer include CT scans and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. They are the only vets on the Island to offer these services. Laparoscopic surgery is standard for all human patients as it is significantly less painful. The surgery involves operating through two tiny incisions in the abdomen and utilising cameras & specialised tools through the holes. Patients are up and about much faster than an old fashioned spay. No more head collars and owners do not have to take days off work to look after their pet. After securing several awards for customer service & innovation, including a recent Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation and a trip to meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace; the team continue to offer a personalised approach with extended consultation times at the base & in clients’ homes allows the Mobile Vets to connect more with their patients/clients. Although the option to visit the base or have a home visit allows diversity, the home visitation service remains at the heart and soul of the business which continues to focus on providing an exemplary customer service whilst maintaining a professional and caring experience for its patients. For more information visit our website, see main advert above or give us a call on 212999 or 07896 260 370

The first day of April is a day for pranksters and jokers to try to catch out as many victims as they can in the annual celebration of April Fools’ Day. An April Fool joke is revealed by shouting “April fool!” at the recipient and a in the UK the joking ceases at midday. Any person playing a joke after midday is the “April fool” themselves. Some newspapers and other media outlets report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters.

This year April Fools’ Day falls on Easter Sunday and whilst writing this I have listened to my friend plan to keep herself entertained by making the kids hunt for eggs she didn’t hide!!! Queen Victoria used to love playing April Fool jokes on her staff by pretending to be a window cleaner. She would turn up at Osborne House with a long ladder and a bucket, touting for work*

A Cute Looking Long-Tailed Tit... The amount of talented photographers and wildlife we have on the Island is amazing and this months front cover picture is all thanks to Scott Newman who has captured this exquisite long-tailed tit in all its glory. This little bird is so cute and looks like a tiny ball of fluff. Scott told me “this photo was taken from my kitchen window. Two of them recently started to fly to my window frames, peering through the glass as they gripped onto the rubber surround. After a few hours I was able to snap photos of them as they went to and fro between the window and my washing line... probably no more than 2 metres away”. Scott has a passion for photography and remembers sitting in a darkened room looking at slides that his dad had taken whilst doing National Service in Aden and photographs his Mum had taken with her Kodak Instamatic but it wasn’t until later in life that this hobby really took hold. He originally started photographing bands in pubs and festivals and also liked to dabble with drawing but then invested his money into a good camera and equipment and his passion for wildlife photography grew. Scott is a self-employed gardener which allows him to work outside whilst earning money for photography equipment. Working outside also gives him access to a multitude of amazing insects that look great in ‘macro’ photos. If your garden would benefit from the skills of a professional gardener then feel free to call Scott on 07989045183 or 855765. 11

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk When I was a boy my grandfather used to have a saying, as we moved from winter to spring, which was “as the days lengthen so the cold strengthensâ€? and this year it was certainly true. The beast from the east was as cold as it has been in many a year and watching the news, it does show how such cold snaps can bring things to a grinding halt. Island Roads did their best to keep the roads gritted and had plenty of the stuff stockpiled ready for use. The emergency services deserve a pat on the back for their endeavours plus people with 4-wheel drive vehicles came forward to make sure wherever possible that vulnerable residents did not miss appointments. As the cold disappeared it was replaced by rain and as the water pipes thawed, I had to turn my hand to plumbing skills! One meeting that fell foul of the weather was the planning committee which has the proposed telecommunications mast on the recreation ground on it. The application is down for approval. Concerns from residents have been raised over the height and over the proposed cabinet which will contain associated workings. There are also some letters of support. I will be attending the meeting and will feed back next month. A revised application has been made for the former cattery site off Palmers Road. I have not had a chance to speak to the planning officer yet so will feed back later. The council has now set its budget for the coming year. I have been involved in meetings since last October, looking at how savings could be made. The authority has had to make ÂŁ7 million of savings, this was achieved and as painful as it is, I believe
the right decisions have been made. This process will have to be gone through next year but over the next year the council must become more pro-active in raising money through services it offers. I have again emailed Island Roads over New Road to try and pin down when the work will start. I have offered to hold a public meeting with residents to inform them what is going to be done but they have declined the offer at the moment. I have been working with Care in the Garden who run the Not for Profit Nursery at Palmers Brook, to get a new highway sign after the previous one was removed as it was deemed a potential hazard. I am pleased to say that the signs have been agreed and should be up soon and hopefully business will be back on track for the spring sales. Work on the Island Plan review is moving on, the council is putting together a brown field land register, brown fields land is land that has been developed and becomes abandoned and is available to be redeveloped for other uses. Potential new housing sites are being looked at and will be put together for a public consultation later in the year. I see Terry and his family are now renewing their equipment in the fish and chip shop after the recent fire. It will be good to see it up and open again soon and I can have haddock and chips again! Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please give me a telephone call on 07800736557 or email: barry.abraham@ IOW.gov.uk 15
