Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines. The year is chugging along nicely and Spring is definitely in the air. April is sometimes a wet month but ‘April Showers Bring May Flowers’ and if we are heading into a lush summer like last year then the flowers and trees will appreciate this extra bit of rain that may or may not happen. Easter is a bit later this year with Easter Sunday on the 21st April. The shelves in the shops are full of chocolate goodies and traditional eggs (and some have been this way since Boxing Day). Hopefully the weather will be good and perhaps this will be the start of the barbecue and picnic season. The Island is definitely coming alive again after a sleepy winter and you can find details of events happening across the Island on pages 10, 11 and 12. Watch out for April Fools on the 1st day of the month!!!!

Here is a list of events up to the end of July we can all look forward to. We are lucky to have such a wonderful programme of events here in Ryde. 28 April - Drive It Day. 21 July - Opera Isle of Wight Summer Opera Fest ‘Tea at the Opera’ All Saints’ Church, Ryde. 27 – 28 July - Elite Soccer Wight Wave Beach Sports Festival, Appley Beach, Ryde I am looking for volunteers to help me tidy a garden of a local charity garden so that users can enjoy some time outside in a safe and cheerful space. If you can spare a few hours with me to support our community, please let me know. I attended an open day at Network Ryde in the Upper High Street on the 9th March and met with some impressive young people that use this space. I learnt what it means to them and how proud they are of it. I met a young man who had moved here last August, he attended Network Ryde and by the time he started school in the September he had already made friends. Not only is this a safe and encouraging place it also is extremely good at engaging with our young people. The biggest concern of some residents is children waiting outside. Can I reassure that staff are monitoring this however it is a public space and is just the case that most of the time it is friends waiting for each other before joining in with activities. I am pleased to let you know that this project has caught the attention of other councils as a leading project and I am very proud as both a councillor and resident. I am pleased to announce that after campaigning for a dog bin on Quarry Road, the hard work paid off and it will be continued over the page
News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni continued installed soon. Many thanks to the environmental officers for their help and support. You are a wonderful asset to Ryde.

Reporting Dog Fouling – Please can I ask that any dog fouling found be reported to Island Roads on 01983 822440. This is important as Email: richelectrics.iow@gmail.com if it isn’t reported it’s like it hasn’t happened and I need to get a true picture of the issue facing us all. I am pleading with those that think it is acceptable to throw dog poo bags into trees and hedges. Please take it home to your general waste or to the nearest dog bin.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk I attended the Pancake day flip off at Grace Church on March 5th along with fellow Cllrs, where money was raised for the Foodbank and Red Box via sponsorship for the competition.
and then tilt the water out over the attendees every few minutes. Sounds like fun
Grace Church have provided the Ryde Foodbank at its premises via its hard working volunteers since it first began.
I attended the Ryde North East Flood Group meeting on the 12th at the Simeon Arms where residents who live on the West side of West Hill Road with gardens that back on to the Simeon recreation ground raised concerns about the water retention and ponding that has increased in their gardens since the new flood wall was erected inside the Rec.
It was a great way to fundraise for the charities, at 393 pancake flips in 5 minutes it put me 111 in front of Cllr Lilley’s 282 making me Ryde’s flipping Champion for another year... it was a good laugh. The notice and plans have been submitted to pedestrianise Ryde High Street, it’s obviously been a designated pedestrian zone for many years but has lacked the proper orders and enforcement, a copy of proposals can be seen at the customer Service Centre at County Hall. Any comments or objections can be sent to highways-pfi@iow.gov.uk before noon on Friday 29th March. The draft notice can be viewed on the Ryde Town Council Website www.rydetowncouncil. org.uk I was pleased to support the vote for Ryde Town Council to allocate funding to the Waterside Trust enabling them to provide a new feature in the children’s splash park situated at the end of Canoe Lake. Many of the water features have deteriorated over the years leaving only the bubbling pool and a few play zones. A Super Soaker Splash Bucket will be installed adding a new dimension to the water play area. The bucket will fill with water above the 8
There had been temporary pumps installed over Christmas but there is no funding for permanent provision in the current flood prevention works. It appears the higher Bank along the edge of the Monkton Brook coupled with the 3 metre deep wall has reduced seepage and is now the cause of ponding in gardens the opposite side of the wall. Residents will now conduct a local survey to find out how many local householders have similar ponding in their gardens that back on to the Recreation ground and together we will make a case for the Environment Agency to seek further funding to fix the new secondary flood problem. The recreation ground is currently very muddy and waterlogged in places and is slowing down the completion of the flood wall cladding and tree planting, but the engineers have assured the flood group that the works will be completed by Easter and the last fencing and equipment will be removed from Cornwall Slip at the edge of the Harbour beach by April.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I write my April piece the wind is blowing a gale and the heat of the sun through the window belies the temperature outside. My nephew and family have returned to the Island for a few days but because of the high winds cannot return to their home in Berkshire as the ferries have been suspended, so nephew and family cannot leave the Island so will not be able to return to work when they should do. What has that got to do with the council you might ask? Well one of the big elephants in the room for the last year or so has been how we cross the Solent and whether it is time to think about a fixed link and I think it is fair to say councillors views are as mixed as the communities that we serve. So is it about time we had a proper look into the idea and have a feasibility study that will make the case one way or the other? You might have recently seen Island Roads have carried out a survey for a crossing on the bridge and that it does not support one, not least because of the number of people crossing there and the various exits onto the main road. The High Street comes down hill and curves onto the bridge. With poor visibility, Kite Hill does the same from the other direction and probably has more obscure vision. As someone who crosses the bridge regularly on foot, I have to say I think the average speed a lot of the time is above 30 MPH. Having said all this I do think a solution needs to be found. A fatality has occurred and I have witnessed recently two young lads make a dash between traffic. I will meet with council officers and Island Roads to find a solution that suits most people.
I still get complaints from residents and users of the Recreation Ground at the amount of dog fouling and I honestly do not think that there will ever be a perfect solution. The council try to monitor the problem the best they can, but apart from having 24 hour surveillance the problem will not go away. I can only plea that dog owners act responsibly and clear up after their pets. I have no wish to see a dog ban on the Recreation Ground. The council is to review parking on the Island, both on road and car parks and put on hold increasing charges in the budget, with the exception of a night time charge in Newport. I know some business owners in the village will not want to see any price increases on Brannon Way, but they may be interested in a permit for staff. All options will be looked at and I would welcome any comments and suggestions. Mrs Abraham constantly reminds me of the impact charges have on small businesses. She is particularly fond of Brannon Way Tea Rooms and spends an hour or two once a week, knitting and nattering with other like minded ladies for a very good cause, knitting hats for premature babies. Knitted squares are also sewn together to make blankets for persons in need and homeless persons. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please give me a telephone call on 07800736557 or email: barry.abraham@IOW.gov.uk.
