Not Gone… Just Relocated! Visitors to the hospital will have noticed that The Friends of St Mary’s have moved from the foyer cafe at the main entrance to make way for a commercial outlet. The new Friends’ cafe is now located in the north end of the hospital, next to the Outpatients Department. Although it is “very much smaller” the volunteers are staying positive. Chairman, Lesley Myland says “it all feels a bit strange at the moment for the cafe not to be in the foyer, but we are determined to carry on serving patients, visitors and hospital staff with our cafes, the twice daily trolley service to the wards, and from our brand new shop. As you know, every penny of profit we make goes to assisting the hospital to buy equipment which makes patient and staff experiences better. Please keep supporting us as you always have so that we can build on the £1.5 million we have already raised in recent years. The new shop is bigger and we are improving our range of refreshments, cards and gifts. We are in a better position now too, as we open directly on to the main corridor “An excellent team opposite the reception offering an area at the front of invaluable service” the hospital. So that has been an exciting NEW! Book online www.mobilevetsurgery.co.uk challenge”. Stress-free Islandwide “Friendly & reliable professional yet Home Visits & You can still find very caring” Central Vet Surgery the Friends serving refreshments at the Laidlaw Day Hospital and now at their new location. You Keyhole CT will find their usual Surgery Scans good coffee or tea, sandwiches, toasted Watergate Rd, Newport, PO30 1XP 01983 212999 teacakes, a variety of snacks and newspapers. And of course the usual warm welcome and good service they have been providing for 32 years at St Mary’s. Don’t forget that they are also in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre. 2
Welcome to the April issue. I’m not sure where to start this month, but feel that I have to mention the Coronavirus outbreak that seems to be the only topic in the news at the moment. It’s a very unpredictable time with nobody really knowing how this is going to pan out. We must continue good hand hygiene and just take it one day at a time. Now on to something positive... whilst I’m writing this the sun is shining and I have washing on the line and it seems to be drying. Let’s hope this is a sign of what is to come. Easter is just around the corner and there are many Easter themed events happening across the Island. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section can be found on pages 8, 9 and 10. Please note with the ongoing issues around Coronavirus some of the listed events may be subject to change. This month’s issue is once again packed with news and information along with some great features and advertisers. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk After an extremely wet winter with many storms and after watching the terrible flooding across the UK, I’m pleased to say Ryde North East flood prevention works have held strong. Only had to call out Island Roads once to clear a surface drain in Monkton Street that was causing pooling in the gutter that spread to part of the pavement, it was quickly unblocked. The Public Space Protection orders (PSPO’s) consultation is still live and you can have your say by completing the online Survey at http://www. surveymonkey.co.uk/r/IWPSPO until the 15th of April. I have received complaints about commuter traffic queues caused by the pay barrier at the pier that can sometimes lead all the way back to Union Street. This has happened since the new requirement for 2 coins to be inserted to gain entrance was introduced due to the price increase, I have asked the Highways officers to approach Wightlink requesting an alternative less congestive system for obtaining payment. Don’t think I’ve seen a system where you actually pay coins at an entrance barrier anywhere for years, the only barrier parking system I have used elsewhere is usually where the driver takes a ticket on entrance, pays at a machine before driving out where his paid ticket is then presented before leaving in order to raise the exit barrier. 4
After observing the current Wightlink system, as far as I can see there are three possible alternatives... 1) Swap the Exit and entrance barriers around, so you pay on exit, thus keeping the peak time traffic queue on the Pier rather than the Esplanade. or 2) That Wightlink install the same camera system as their car park has across the road from the Portsmouth Ferry terminal, where you enter and exit without barriers as you have to pay at the pay machine before leaving or get an automatic parking fine in the post (a similar system is used at Lidl in Newport). 3) Take a ticket on entrance system I mentioned above. All of these systems would allow a far more free flowing and less time consuming practical entrance to the Pier. A recent vote for a resident permit and limited time waiting parking zone in upper Dover Street was returned with only 20% of dwellings in the street directly affected responding, because the response was less than the required 51% it failed. Because it was such a poor response no resident parking zone will now be implemented.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk At last we are getting the odd dry day. I read a supposed fact the other day that apparently, of the last 150 days, only 13 were dry. If it was not true it felt like it was and on most days it seemed to come with strong winds that has played havoc with the spring flowers. Our pots of crocus have been battered by the rain and wind before they have had a chance to open. This month’s big issue is the coronavirus or COVID19, that seems about to bring the world to its knees. Virtually every meeting that I attend has an update and what measures should be put in place to protect ourselves from its effects. Most advice given by the NHS and public health is I think a sensible approach, such as regular hand washing etc and not panic buying food and toilet rolls. Most importantly is in the words of Corporal Jones is “don’t panic”. It does appear after the first confirmed cases that the dice has been cast and containment is all but impossible to achieve but where ever possible the rules need to be followed and hopefully the outbreak will be controlled.
Nothing to report on planning at the moment, only small mostly non controversial applications. As residents raise issues with me I speak to planning officers and hopefully they can be resolved successfully. Many people will never have heard of A.E.W. Mason but in the early 20th century he was a well known prolific author writing many novels, plays and short stories, probably his best known book now would be The Four Feathers. He also created a french detective, Inspector Hanaud who it is believed Agatha Christie based Hercule Poirot on. For good measure he was elected as an M.P. For Coventry at the 1906 General Election. Now you are probably wondering why I am writing about a now obscure dead author, but in 1917 he wrote a book of short stories in a collection called The four Corners of the World and one of these stories is a ghost story based on the Island and Wootton in particular. Any one reading the book from Wootton would recognise him driving down the High Street crossing the Bridge, in what is thinly disguised is the house that is for sale called Hawks Hill, which is of course is Kite Hill. As I grew up in the house I recognised it from the description straight away. I will leave it up to you to read the book to find out what happens in the story. My Wife has done further research and we now believe Mason bought the tenancy in 1908 but he was not in residence in the 1911 census he is down as the owner, our research continues.
With all the wet weather there has been a few problems with drainage issues and flooded rights of way around the village. I have met with Lushington residents who have problems with their gardens flooded by roads draining into their gardens. I have arranged a meeting between highways and residents to find a solution. Other issues I have reported to Rights of Way and officers who deal with land And to finish Spring has truly arrived the drainage. first of our Hereford Cows has had a calf. 6

Over 900 years ago, an order of monks founded a hospital in Jerusalem to care for the sick and injured Christian crusaders, the name of that order was the Order of St John. Gaining popularity and strength throughout Europe the order continued to care for what was quoted as “their masters, the blessed sick”. Although dissolved by Henry VIII in England during his reign, the message of the order was never lost. First reformed in England in the mid nineteenth century, the St John Ambulance Association published its first aid manual in 1877. 10 years later, many were recognising the need for some form of organised care for the victims of accidents, so in 1887 the St John Ambulance Brigade was formed, performing its first public duty at the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria. Just 2 years after that first duty, in 1889 the Isle of Wight gained its first St John Ambulance Division, linked to Sandown Fire Brigade. Since then St John has seen mixed fortunes, from being almost non existent in the years between the world wars, to at the height of World War 2, there being over 12 active ambulance Divisions 11 cadet Divisions cross the island, with over 600 volunteers. At many of the landmark events on the Island sitting quietly in the background, watching and waiting to help, have been St John Volunteers. Be that at small school fetes, up to the first Isle of Wight festivals, through to the Cowes Week regatta. Today, St John Ambulance, Isle of Wight has just 3 active units, Badgers, for children aged from 7, a cadet unit for children aged 10 and upwards and the adult unit for everyone over 18. Both of the youth units offer children a range of activities, and not just first aid orientated. For volunteers in the adult unit, there is the offer of full training to become an event first aider, advanced first aider or even as crew on the unit’s emergency ambulances. Volunteers don’t need any prior experience; however, the unit also welcomes healthcare professionals, doctors, nurses and paramedics wishing to become volunteers. Volunteering costs people only their time. Our youth team meet weekly on Tuesday evenings between 6.30 and 8 and our adult volunteers meet weekly on Thursday evenings between 7pm and 9pm. Both weekly meets are held at St John Ambulance HQ, 12 Manners View, Dodnor Park, Newport, PO30 5FA. Whilst we are currently only in Newport, if there are sufficient people interested, we may look to opening units elsewhere around the Island The easiest way for people to get in touch with us at present is via our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/SJAIoW
