Welcome to the August issue and if you are a regular reader of Island Magazines I would like to take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of myself, advertisers and contributors for picking up a copy and supporting this popular community magazine. If you have only recently come across this publication I hope you find it an interesting read? Our main aim is to play a key part in the local community by sharing local news, information and supporting local businesses by offering them a platform to promote themselves and the services they offer. I always like to give a little mention about the weather, and all I have to say this month is wow.... it’s been hot! The Island is getting busy and the calendar is full with local events and carnivals and you can find details of these on pages 4 & 5. There is a lot of hard work from volunteers in the preparation of these events and I hope you get the chance to enjoy some or all of the carnivals that the various towns host. It’s what summer on the Isle of Wight is all about. I hope you all have a great August and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

They will return to the Harbour beach after the summer to remove the old redundant outfall pipe and connect the new one that goes into the Harbour. Whilst writing this the children’s sand play park is being reinstated at Cornwall Slip with the addition of a mini JCB digger by the EA. It’s good to see a busy beach soccer Arena on Appley Beach during the summer, they are now located there until the end of the season and have continued to draw a crowd.

News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 www.facebook.com/yourvoicecountsryde Residents to lead the biggest clean-up of Ryde beaches for Isle of Wight Day weekend. On the 23rd September we are all getting together to do our bit to clean up our part of the 67-mile coast line of this beautiful Island. This will be the UK’s longest ever coastline clean-up to rid of unwanted plastic waste that the seas have dumped on our shores. 400 people have already registered their interest to get involved. We will meet up on Sunday 23rd September at 11.30am at Aspire, Dover Street, Ryde to collect disposable rubbish bags, gloves, high viz vests and other equipment to help with the coastal clean-up. All plastic rubbish collected over the weekend will be safely disposed of in conjunction with the IOW Council. Please do let me know if you can spare a few hours to join in via my Facebook page event on Cllr Karen Lucioni or on 07506930109. The Isle of Wight day parade will be on the 22nd September in Cowes this year and why I have organised the clean-up for the Sunday. I want to thank all those who have already registered and look forward to welcoming more. July Round up I have been very busy engaging with the public still on fly tipping and dog mess with the help of the environmental officer and would like to thank her and the public for their co-operation with this ongoing emotive subject. Please keep reporting these as we do need to get this all under control together. 8
I am supporting a community lunch at Aspire; the aim is to do this every day of the year they are open, so that anyone can join them. I hope this will tackle social isolation and support those that are finding getting a good meal daily difficult. I have been welcomed a few times to join lunch and met lots of interesting people who find Aspire a wonderful place to go to. I was approached by a resident who had a piano they did not need anymore, and did I know of anyone who would like it. As a governor I approached the Haylands Primary and asked if there was a child who was learning the piano that might want one... I am happy to report we have a very happy child with a piano to practice on inbetween lessons. Ryde in Bloom was judged in July, it was a joy to visit the schools that entered, it was not only wonderful to see the gardens in full bloom the children were just delightful! Tesco have committed to me that they will be sponsoring the school competition next year. We will be visiting all Ryde schools very soon to let you all know the exciting plans. Ryde Alive! This is a new resident lead group that meets once a month with the focus on working together to organise wellbeing activities. I have been welcomed into this group and I really look forward to getting involved. It is funded by sovereign Housing and enables residents to receive support and training. If you are a sovereign housing tenant and want to get involved, please do ask me for more details.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk The summer solstice has come and gone since I wrote my last report, the weather is hot and dry and it is truly amazing that as little as three months ago I was bemoaning how wet the weather was. One thing I have noticed is that there does seem to be a lot of butterflies around. Warm dry days does seem to suit them. Apart from the obvious bright coloured ones I struggle in all honesty in telling some of the others apart. A few years ago I bought a book on butterflies, sadly it has not helped one bit! But it is still nice to see them. The Palmers Farm planning application is now open for the public to comment on and can be viewed on the IWIGHT.com council website. I have major concerns about what this application will have on the environment, roads and village facilities, such as the GP surgery and the school, whilst conditions can be placed requiring payments to help mitigate the impact they never help in the way they should. What we have a shortage of, is truly low cost housing and housing that is available at an affordable rent and this will need the council to intervene more in the housing provision on the Island to make this happen. The Parish Council has adopted the Walking & Cycling environmental report. The PC commissioned the report to help with areas where it is difficult to walk or cycle around the parish and whilst this report is not anti-car, it is about making it a safer environment for residents and visitors to access the cycle routes and walk on roads without feeling under threat of being run over.
The weather was glorious for the Isle of Wight Music Festival and I have not heard of any major problems. I did get held up in the opening Thursday traffic and spent thirty minutes on the High Street and missed a meeting in County Hall. Much was made of the 50th anniversary of the very first IW Festival at Godshill, it was held on my Grandfather’s brother’s Ford Farm in Hell Field. Next year, of course, it is 50 years since the Wootton Festival and as a young lad of eleven years old, I can well remember it and the impact it had on the village. I thought at the time that it was really exciting, all the shops and pubs appeared to do a roaring trade and I am told that the beer ran dry! Of course there was a downside because of lack of toilets, Church Road gardens became toilets and residents quite rightly became resentful. Mum and Dad did take my sister and myself to see the site and what a site it was. The question is, how should we as a community commemorate the anniversary? I would welcome any views. Before the land became so dry the road verges this year were a mass of wild flowers. As I have got older I do appreciate how important these areas are for nature conservation and I think it is important that where possible the council manage it. With conservation in mind, clearly road safety will mean some trimming but let’s try and be more supportive of plants and animal life. Nature is not all about neat and tidy. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please do get in touch by any of the means above. 11
