Boom Boom!! This month’s front cover certainly shows the trust that can develop between wildlife and a photographer. Whilst relaxing and basking in the sunshine this beautiful creature was happy to be digitally captured by David Cramp. David is a ‘hobby photographer’ but started out in his school days as an artist, drawing and painting subjects that caught his eye and on occasions a bit of photography with a box camera. He then moved on to a different type of art and made a career as an antique restorer/french polisher but when digital cameras first appeared on the scene his interest in photography returned and has now become an extension of his art. What David would have previously painted he can now capture with his camera. His images are for his own personal use but are gaining plenty of attention when shared via social media. David says “there is no way in the world I could take photos to order – the subject has to be something that just catches my eye” and I am sure everyone will agree that this picture really does catch the eye.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk The summer has finally arrived and the school holidays have started. I used to love those six weeks of no school. Usually for councils it is a quiet time, with staff having their annual breaks, so meetings tended to be less, but as the council funding has become cut back some ÂŁ87 million in round terms over the last few years and something like another ÂŁ13 million savings needing to be found in the next two years, this has meant budget meetings have already started to try and find where the money can come from without hitting the most vulnerable people. This does sometimes mean the council stop doing things or changing the way it delivers services and sometimes working with other organisations such as charities a lot of the time better services can be the outcome. Last month I mentioned the concern of traffic rat running through Rectory Drive, making their way to Brocks Copse Road to by-pass the High Street. I raised this with the parish council and it was agreed to meet with Island Roads to try and find a solution. A first step is likely to be monitoring the speed and number of vehicles using the road with the road strips.

The path on the Recreation Ground is looking in a sorry state at the moment and residents have been telling me that stones are being thrown into their gardens. A quote was requested by the Isle of Wight Council for the section from the High Street through past the entrance to the school. I will be meeting with Liz the parish clerk and officers to see how we can progress the work, I am keen if possible to completely tarmac the whole path from the High Street to the Footways car park. I still get complaints at the amount of dog fouling on the Recreation Ground, this is so anti-social, I have asked the council to review the placement of the bins but bearing in mind my comments on the councils shrinking budgets, the council can ill afford to put up yet more bins with all the cost of having them emptied regularly.

I was recently talking to someone about recycling and how the council has some pretty challenging recycling targets and how as a society the community is getting behind the need to recycle. Most shoppers now have reusable bags, replacing plastic ones and as usual with people of a certain age (over 60) I recently contacted Island Roads to find out we started to talk about how things used if any likelihood of the second phase of the New Road works are likely to happen anytime to be. Glass milk bottles that were always returned, lemonade bottles with a deposit, soon and I have had a response from them, stating that the end of October is the intended fish and chips in newspaper but the one that start date. I will be meeting with Island Roads we both agreed has created a lot of waste is when you went to the chemist with a to find out how the work will be carried out bearing in mind how complex the work is likely prescription, the pills were in a brown bottle of various sizes which could be returned to be and I will report back next month. for re-use, has been replaced by so-called blister packs, with the A4 leaflet telling you Last month there was a parish council byalmost why you should not take them. But of election and I am delighted to welcome Trish course when you get to that certain age you Evans on to the parish council. She is well regularly take pills, all in blister packs, all with known in the village having worked for many years at the primary school and served on the explanatory leaflets, how much waste does this create when a little brown bottle that Village Partnership and has been a regular could be returned used to do the trick! attendee at parish meetings. 6

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk The season and summer has finally started It’s been a bumpy start on many levels with technical difficulties (including the weather). The sand park at Appley is finally open after undergoing a refurbishment/upgrade, it took a bit longer than expected but we now have a new super long Slide etc. The Waterside Trust run water play park has also had pump problems that they only discovered when the new “Big soaker tilt Bucket” was fitted, the water park was originally provided by the Ryde Development Trust but like the shelters on North walk had no ongoing maintenance contract, so the 2 pumps (one 3 phase) had come to the end of their life and had to be replaced. Unluckily they were both situated underneath all the complicated pipes etc in the small pump room and FW Marsh and sons have spent weeks down there working to fix the problems.

we get some funding for Ryde’s public realm at the end of the process. The Lifeguards are back on duty every day on Ryde Beach providing a good service to beach goers, the slipways have finally been cleared and the beach is in good condition being litter picked every day and machine cleaned and raked every other day. I was disappointed to see that the new flood wall in Simeon recreation ground had got graffiti all over one section already, I will be asking the Environment Agency to clean it and encouraging them to paint it with anti graffiti paint so any new mess can be removed quickly. I’ve also had a few complaints about rubble and debris on the Harbour beach left from the flood prevention engineering works, and I will be raising this with the Environment Agency at the Flood Group Meeting.

Parking services are conducting a resident parking zone survey on several streets in Ryde North East where residents have supported the implementation and will be I was pleased to support the vote to provide a reporting their findings to the September formal expression of interest to the “Heritage Ryde North East Action Group Meeting. High Street fund”, it was a long arduous debate with some members (who didn’t (I will provide date and time in my report appear to have read the funding document next month) and criteria before the meeting) speaking negatively at length against the option. Hope we all get to enjoy a lovely warm sunny summer during the school holidays We got there in the end after hearing this year. presentations from Zoe from the Ryde Business Association and the Director of See you on the beach!!! Regeneration, the vote carried and let’s hope It is hoped the splash park (now under great demand) will be by the end of July.

News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 www.facebook.com/yourvoicecountsryde I do hope your summer has been wonderful for you all so far, I will be taking a short break through August to recharge my batteries and return to represent in September. I will of course be available for anything important. I have been volunteering at the Aspire shop on the High Street, next to Boots, if you have any bric-a-brac, or good quality items that could be re-loved in someone else’s home please let Aspire know or give me a call. Volunteers are always appreciated and needed so please volunteer alongside me if you can. Please remember to use refillable water containers or refill plastic bottles you buy. Refill outlets are dotted around Ryde and you are welcome to go in and refill if you need to. Costa coffee, cod father, Kind Lud, Ryde Harbour, Liz Earle and Wetherspoons to name a few. Please do not only use plastics once. It is one way of trying to look after our environment. You can download the app to find your nearest refill station at www.refill.org.uk. I am really concerned about the amount of anti-social behaviour seen within our town, shelters and seafront. I am part of a group supporting residents that are suffering because of bad choices and behaviour of some within our community. I am hoping that being involved with residents and other projects in Ryde it should cause some changes that will benefit us all. I am still pursuing the deployable CCTV for Ryde hotspots. We all deserve respect as does our town, businesses and tourists. If you would like to chat in confidence about anti-

social behaviour that has affected, you or your family then please do contact me on 07506930109. One of the most emotive subjects I have calls about is parking, especially people parking in unenforced disabled bays. Please consider that if you park in one of these bays and you are not a blue badge holder you are probably going to cause someone who needs to use the bay some distress. Also please think before you park on the pavement not only does it cause damage to our pavements that are not constructed for the weight of a car, it also causes issues for disabled scooter users, parents with pushchairs and cause people to have to walk into the road. The Respect Ryde signs for dog fouling and fly-tipping seem to have made a difference and I will have some data soon. Please make sure if these issues are affecting your street or community, report it to island roads so that the data can be used to clean up our town.
