Hello and welcome to the August issue of Island Magazines. It’s hard to believe that over half the year has passed already and I think 2020 is certainly going to be a year no one will ever forget! I would like to thank everyone that got in touch to comment how nice it was to see us back in print. Your kind words mean a lot and thank you for supporting your local community magazine. Lockdown has been a busy time for local charity Feline Welfare who were inundated with homeless and stray cats and new kittens. Nikki and her team of foster parents have been kept on their toes ensuring the cats have stayed safe during this period but the time has come to find forever homes for many of them. Our article on page 12 features just a few of the ones ready to move on and they are eagerly waiting by the phone ready for you to call and meet them. On the subject of animals, don’t you think the front cover picture is amazing? We are lucky to have so many talented photographers on the island and you can find the story behind this months star on page 11.

The packing off to the mainland of many ‘bread and butter’ and some of the more serious illnesses left us isolated when such an emergency, as Covid-19 happened, and one which could, will happen again. Over the past years many of our central Services have been eroded to the mainland, in the name of efficiency and cost, something that the 10 billion wasted on an App which did not work, would have well covered for years to come.

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07768 118766 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk I attended the contract signing ceremony for the Isle of Wight to host the last leg of the 2022 Tour of Britain. It will be a great opportunity to promote our picturesque island as a cycling destination. This will need private sector sponsorship to make this happen. The Environment Agency engineers have been working for several weeks repairing the damage to the footpath around Ryde Harbour caused by subsidence from escaping water around the new outfall pipe. Good to see the Ryde Beach lifeguard service back on duty for the summer on Ryde beach, they have added a new Rib to their lifesaving equipment. We have had quite a few jet skies speeding too close to the shore during sunny days, with our shallow water many bathers are able to swim further out and there’s a high risk of the jet skies running into them at speed.
report I am still working hard to get the Fastcat service back up and running as its our East Wight vital rail to rail link for Island sustainable commuters, NHS patients, and visitors alike. Ryde is not a gateway without it. Even some of the Tour of Britain cyclists (including Andrew Ridgeley) said how they missed coming over via the service for daily cycling trips around our island, sometimes coming back from Shanklin or Sandown by Island line. With the loss of our coach trip and EF student visitors a sustainable pedestrian day trip link is vital to our economy. With news of the Yarmouth car ferry service restarting it’s madness that the Fastcat service remains suspended when the East Wight has over 60,000 households, plus many more commuters and businesses that depend on it.
The Isle of Wight Council are considering interventions and new by-laws as an attempt to prevent an accident.
I would like to thank everyone who has supported the petition, if you haven’t already done so please go online and sign at https://www.change.org/p/wightlinkferries-request-wightlink-reinstate-thefastcat-service-for-commuters-and-visitors
As Cabinet Member for Business and Tourism, and at the time of writing this
Fingers crossed that by the time you read this service will have resumed.

Cloud Bread Like many others I have recently ‘tweaked’ my diet and one of the main things I’ve given up/cut down on is carbs but one thingt I am really missing is bread. On my quest to find an alternative that wasn’t carb loaded I came across ‘cloud bread’, duly named for it’s light fluffy texture. I was promised it will satisfy my cravings without undoing any of the benefits I have already achieved. For those who don’t know, Cloud Bread is high in protein and extremely low in carbs, making it the perfect sandwich bread for those on a low carb, gluten free, or grain free diet. They take a bit of getting used to but are so easy to make and you can freeze them or keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Here is my simple tried and tested recipe. Ingredients 4oz cream cheese 3 egg yolks 1 tsp baking powder 3 egg whites Salt and pepper
Method Heat over to 150C/130C fan/gas2 and line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. In a large bowl whisk the egg whites with the baking powder using an electric whisk, until stiff peaks form. In another bowl whisk together the egg yolks and cream cheese until smooth, pale and frothy. Add salt and pepper. Next, fold the egg whites a spoonful at a time into the yolk mixture. Be as gentle as you can so you don’t knock out too much of the air. Carefully dollop the mixture onto the prepared baking sheets and gently spread into even 4 inch circles. If the mixture is a little runny when you get to the bottom of the bowl don’t use the last few spoonfuls - only use the fluffy mix on top. Makes approximately 6. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden in colour. Allow to cool for a few moments before carefully removing with a palette knife. 9
News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk Another month and the Covid virus is still impacting upon our lives, albeit the lockdown is gradually being slackened off. Certainly there are more cars on the roads and anyone living close to the High Street will be subject to the return to the constant drone of the traffic. As people start to move about, some of the familiar problems are coming back. Woodside: the dog bin at the top of the footpath has constantly been overflowing with rubbish, I have contacted Island Roads who have the contract to empty the bin 3 times a week, to clear the backlog. Also at Woodside, a resident contacted me about the amount of rubbish left on the beach including smashed glass littered around. I contacted the council’s contacts management team who had the rubbish removed by Amey and a big thank you to them for their response. Although not in my Wootton Bridge ward but just outside is Woodhouse Copse which has been subject to a lot of unauthorised activity that included over one weekend loud music which was described to me by one resident as a rave. I contacted the police and council enforcement team who have now visited the site and found a number of breeches of planning regulations and enquiries are ongoing. When the forestry commission sold Woodhouse Copse there was a covenant that it should be open for public access. At the moment this is not possible. I am working with my colleague Councillor Stephen Hendry who represents Whippingham to get the access restored. The ultimate sanction the council has is to compulsory purchase the wood but I hope things can be settled before it comes to that. 10
Despite trying to get a definite date when New Road will at last have the second phrase completed I cannot pin Island Roads down to a date. The council has decided to put on hold the local plan consultation to take into account the effect the pandemic has had on planning policies. Online shopping is likely to put pressure on the High Street and the viability of smaller shops and High Street landlords might at last want to see the flats over shops come back into use as pressure is put on rentable values. Where people working at home will need to be taken into account in housing design. Derelict sites (brownfield) are where residents always raise with me and wish to see development first, for this to happen we need to see government support through legislation to bring these sites forward and not left for years being a blot in our towns and villages. I hope by the next time I write, that Wightlink will have reinstated the catamaran service, it is a vital Island link and in the summer, brings so many day visitors to the Island. Yes you can get off the Island via car ferry or hovercraft but they have the inconvenience of not giving direct rail access in the way the cat does. There has been little going on in Planning applications other than small applications. Nothing controversial. It has been brought to my attention that the land at Palmers that has planning for residential development is on the market but the plan on the sale particulars is different than that with permission. I will keep an eye on it. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council please get in touch with me.
Well Hello There… All I can say about this month’s front cover picture is WOW… I’m sure you will all agree with me that the photo is stunning and is all thanks to local photographer Tara Harvey. Feline Welfare - Isle of Wight
Registered Charity: 1084722
The recent lockdown has resulted in Feline Welfare being inundated with cats, not just strays and abandoned cats but many of them needing medical assistance. Her furry visitors all have one thing in common, they are looking for a loving and caring home, whether this is via full adoption or with foster parents!!
