Life is very stressful and difficult for many at the moment and the past 18 months in particular have not been easy. Some people have taken stock of what is going on and addressed how to cope with these changes in a positive and therapeutic way and found comfort in holistic therapies. Yvonne Todd is the owner of Ibon’nu Holistic Therapy and has been practicing Reiki for over 20 years and holistic massage for 13 years. Her range of therapies include Angel Reiki, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Crystal Healing and more recently Seashell Healing Therapy. Not many people have heard of this relatively new therapy which uses the energy of the seashells along with the body’s own energy. The moons influence on the ocean means that the seashells hold the energy of both the ocean and the moon making them very powerful. Shells have been used for centuries in healing, protection, spiritual and psychic awareness.
Seashell Healing Crystal Healing Reiki Angel Reiki Reflexology Indian Head Massage
Seashell Healing is extremely therapeutic and uses the energy of the seashells along with your bodies own energy. Shells have been used for centuries in healing, protection, spiritual and psychical awareness. Clients lay fully clothed, listening to the calming sounds of the ocean while shells are placed on and around the body and left in place for up to an hour. Reiki can also be performed during this treatment to enhance the healing qualities. Yvonne treats all her clients on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level. She has created a relaxing healing room, located in the Yarborough Arcade in Shanklin and is a place of tranquillity ensuring full relaxation while you escape the everyday stresses. For those who cannot travel, Ibon’nu Holistic Therapy will come to you evenings and weekends. It’s time to look after yourself and have some ‘me’ time. By the end of the treatment, you will feel the benefits and be ready to take the world on again.

Whilst writing this the sun is shining, the temperature is in the early to mid-20’s and it looks like Summer has arrived... but I am also aware that this can change at the drop of a hat and one part of the island may be enjoying the sun and yet another area at the same time can be taking shelter from the rain. s summer finally here???
We are very lucky to be surrounded by some amazing beaches that are just perfect for swimming and are ideal on those hot days when nothing is more refreshing than a dip in the sea, whether it’s just your big toe, up to your knees or are really brave and commits fully to the task in hand. Inside this issue you will find news, information, some great advertisers, the puzzle pages, our ‘dates for your diary’ section and much more. Our aim has always been to reach out to the community to share news and information and if you have community news you want to share, please get in touch with us via any of the means below. I hope you have a great August and get the chance to enjoy the freedom of meeting up with family and friends after such a long break and you get to enjoy our beautiful island which, come rain or shine, is one of the best places to live. News Report from Michael Lilley for Ryde Appley and Elmfield 07769 551 578 | Michael.lilley@iow.gov.uk | www.michaellilley.uk
Enjoy the summer in Ryde and sit on a deckchair on the beach! As Mayor of Ryde, I am very proud that in August, Ryde beaches will see deckchairs, parasols, sun loungers, and a range of beach equipment such as paddle boards. Ryde Town Council has a Ryde Leisure department that now has a cabin by the harbour where deckchairs and other beach equipment will be available for hire. This is part of an initiative by the Council to support the rejuvenation of the town post Covid-19 and rebuild our local economy. RTC has purchased a number of empty heritage buildings including St. Thomas’s Church for a youth centre and community activities. We purchased Vectis Hall and now received a grant from the Architectural Heritage Fund to carry out a feasibility study and architectural fees to develop a plan/design for community use. The Council have voted now to go to the next stage of purchasing the Town Hall and in discussion with a range of stakeholders about its eventual use especially with support from Historic England.
Save Westridge Farm Campaign rolls on! By the time you read this news report, the IWC Planning Committee would have decided the fate of the West Acre Park Planning application to build 473 houses on Westridge Farm and effectively close the farm down. This dairy farm has been part of the Ryde Community for hundreds of years and even though housing is needed, I am totally against the loss of green countryside and a viable farm. I have been
fighting this and will continue. There are over 400 objectors and 4500 who signed a petition.
Ryde Town Council supports the establishment of a community farm! On the 5th of July, Ryde Town Council voted unanimously (13 for and 2 abstentions) to support a motion brought by Ryde Appley And Elmfield Ryde Town Councillors Jenna Sabine and Lisa Carter to support the establishment of a community farm which fits RTC’s commitment to the biosphere and preserve this important greenspace in Ryde for future generations. Ryde Town Council totally objects to the West Acre Planning application along with Nettlestone and Seaview Parish Council. The Plunkett Foundation, a national rural development agency, is supporting the initiative and granted funding for a mentor to the project from Fordhall Farm in Shropshire which is a successful and sustainable community farm. The Survey carried out by Save the Westridge campaign had well over 800 local residents complete it who support the idea. This project would fit with Isle of Wight and Ryde Town Councils’ commitment to climate change and IW’s UNESCO Biosphere status. Local residents have formed a steering group to establish the Westridge Land Community Initiative which will aim to raise funds to purchase the Westridge farmland for the community of Ryde in perpetuity. The aim is to establish a community farm and provide a secure continued over the page
News Report from Michael Lilley for Ryde Appley and Elmfield tenancy for the existing farming family, support them to develop a farm shop, produce milk and eggs for Ryde residents and local restaurants/cafes/shops, develop food products and support Ryde’s growing food economy, and develop a farming/ environmental/biosphere education facility for local schools and families. See more on: www.savewestridgefarm.org.uk It is an exciting time for Ryde and I am enjoying seeing family again who live on the mainland now lockdown is over. I love my family and Ryde and please join me in August on a deckchair on the beach.

For example, popping round for a cuppa and a friendly chat. Find out more at: www.mountbatten.org.uk/volunteer e-mail voluntary.services@mountbatten.org.uk phone 01983-217304

The demand for Mountbatten’s expert care and support is going to increase in the years ahead and that’s why we need your support. We need volunteers to: • help provide a supportive environment for those visiting the John Cheverton Centre. • support one of our 10 Mountbatten shops across the Island? • help in our Sunflower Café in the weekday evenings and daytime at the weekends. • become a ‘Mountbatten Neighbour’ supporting someone near you by visiting for a cuppa and offering a ‘listening ear’? • support those who have been bereaved – both with our Bereavement Helpline and with face to face and group support.

News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan - Ryde North West. Tel: 07929 376375 | Email: phil.jordan@iow.gov.uk Are you ready for electric cars yet? It might seem a long way off but by 2030 cars that are fossil fuelled will no longer be sold. By 2035 no cars that are not entirely electric will be sold. This is quite daunting really because we must go from where we are today with almost no infrastructure for electric vehicles to a point where we must have EVCP’s (electric vehicle charging points) widely available across the Island. For many people, home charging might well be a possibility and there are grants and offers available to install charging points in homes. However, not everyone has the offroad space or somewhere they can install a charging point without trailing cables across pavements in urban areas. A trial of 10 public, on road, charging points is being trialled around towns on the Island including Ryde and are planned to be rolled out this year. They are being paid for by a government grant and are the start of understanding how and where we need to think about public charging points and how we get them installed in the appropriate places for maximum benefit. Of course, there are growing private companies already delivering EVCP schemes especially in off road garage type environments where technology already allows fast charging – around 10 minutes – with suitable café/refreshment areas included to provide services during charging. Sites are being researched already and I know Ryde has been identified as a potential EVCP garage provision. More on that as things develop. We’ve all certainly been through an extraordinary time in the past 18 months,
but I am really encouraged by the new shops and restaurants and bars opening in and around Union Street. Cross street has also started to become an upcoming, vibrant place with interesting, individual businesses attracting customers to their premises. The former Packs shop, close to the corner of Cross Street and Union Street, has also opened its doors to a wide range of art and cultural displays and events and I am aware of numbers of individual people looking for small premises in Ryde generally to develop boutique businesses or specialist food outlets. These are all great signs of post covid recovery and a confidence in Ryde that we are seeing, in no small way by Ryde Town Council becoming proactive and creative in the way it delivers services to the community by investing in people and place in a way we have never seen before. Long may that continue. Similarly, we now know that the Ice Rink has been sold and the new owners plan to open a leisure type destination business including distillery and food/drink space and we await to see how that eventually gets started and trading in the coming months. With summer here and visitors in our town and on the beaches, we look forward to a continued resurgence in Ryde for visitors and residents alike. Just a further reminder that the classic car show is back in Ryde on September 10th/11th/12th and hundreds of spectacular cars are descending on Ryde for the whole weekend with events and activities for all planned. A fantastic event raising money for charity and a free day out for all the family.

News Report for Wootton Bridge from Cllr Daryll Pitcher Tel: 07511 045 145 | daryll@planetmail.net I feel I must start this article with something of an apology. You may know the old adage about counting chickens before they are hatched, well I seem to have done something similar to that in the last edition regarding the Post Office. The sharp eyed amongst you will have noticed that it has not started operation. This is due to technical issues in the set up. These are not insurmountable, and the revised plan is for the popup Post Office to start sometime in mid-August. Keep an eye on social media and on the front window of the Parish Council office where the opening times will be published once we have final confirmation. I have had reports of potential scammers working in the village. They have approached vulnerable people offering to repair driveways for free claiming to have “tarmac/surfacing/gravel they need to get rid of ” and then once they have done the job (to a poor standard it must be said) they start demanding money running to thousands of pounds. Fortunately, I am not aware that they have got away with it so far but please be on the lookout for yourself and for any vulnerable neighbours you may have. It appears they have an orange truck and a van which may be white. If you have any concerns, please let the authorities know or please feel free to contact myself and I will do what I can. My mailbag has been bulging recently with complaints regarding verges and footpaths maintained by the Isle of Wight Council. Tellingly those areas maintained by the Parish Council have been top-notch and look great, but the IW Council areas had become very overgrown. I repeatedly 12
chased this up and despite initially being warned it could be August before anything happened, I am pleased to say that trimming does now seem to have happened on both footpaths and verges. The verges are covered by Island Roads as part of the PFI contract while footpaths are dealt with separately by the IW Council directly. I haven’t had a chance to check all of them yet, but I will try and get around within the next few days. If you have any problems with such maintenance, please do get in touch. I am pleased to report that work has been carried out on the unmade junction between Church Road and Palmers Road. I have received several compliments so my thanks to those involved. I am also pleased to say that some of the worst of the potholes in the other sections up to Norman Way will be looked at in due course. When and if the development at Palmers Farm commences the junction will be rebuilt with brick paving as per the planning requirements. My final piece of news is that work to progress the path around the recreation ground is being taken. This had got bogged down (figuratively, not literally!) but things have started moving again. Hopefully I will soon be able to give a timetable of when we may see work start. The plan is for the existing pathway to be upgraded to a smooth surface and for the final section from Lushington Hill to the Rugby Club to be installed creating a complete loop.
