When I first took the step to embrace and learn yoga I thought that I would be throwing myself into the ‘downward facing dog’ and ‘tree’ positions, and working on ways to make me more supple, but as yet I haven’t tried these poses and I have now realised that there is so much more to yoga than I first thought. If I had to compare it to anything I would have to say ‘an onion’ ... there are many layers to it and it is very versatile. This may sound like a cliché Email: hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk but yoga really is about physical and mental wellbeing and for now I am working more on breathing, stretching and meditating.

The type of yoga I am learning is called Satyananda and is being taught by Nickie Short and each lesson is based around what I need at that present time which is why these one to one lessons are perfect for me but I am looking forward to getting to the stage when I am ready for some ‘traditional yoga poses’. Her weekly classes include posture, breathing, meditation and chanting and although the structure of the class is similar each week, the content takes you through a journey of progression and self-awareness. For more information and to see how Nickie can help you call her on 07799 032824 or visit her website www.yogaisleofwight.co.uk and see her main advert below.

News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 www.facebook.com/yourvoicecountsryde In November I made sure our town, businesses and residents of Ryde Town were represented regarding the proposal of the introduction of parking fees within our town by starting a petition expressing the view that this should not happen. When this went to print the petition was over 3700 and in line with the Isle of Wight Council constitution, petitions over 2500 can be debated at full council. I have requested this and will update you all in January. It is my belief that we need to support our town as it is under enough pressure. Let’s not forget the residents that also live above the shops, where parking is a necessity. Thank you to all those who visited St Michaels Remembrance Day on the 10th November and made it a huge success, photos can be found on my website (www. karenlucioni.co.uk) or Facebook page (Cllr Karen Lucioni). I would like to express my thanks to Mark and his team at Co-op in West Street for donating the refreshments. Our Christmas event will take place on 15th December between 3 & 5pm and will be a Christmas Carol singalong. I am very excited to take part and refreshments will be provided. Let’s support our local community, see you all there. I proposed a motion to Ryde Town Council at Novembers full council. The motion was for Ryde Town Council to lead as an example of good practice in improving access for the sensory impaired at Full Council meetings. I also proposed a working party to deal with issues surrounding sensory impairment and make full council more accessible, so all can attend meetings when they want to. If 4

you have any comments on how we could improve access for all, please do let me know. I am also part of the Ryde Access forum which is user lead and run by Isle Access so if you would like to attend this event, I would encourage you to contact me and I will let you know the date and venue of the next meeting. This is to try and make Ryde as accessible as possible to all. I am also doing a British sign language course myself to be able to communicate better with our deaf community. I am enjoying learning this new skill immensely. As a trustee of the Bus Shelter, we have been working hard to open before the very cold weather. Unfortunately, we are unable to get planning from the council for this to happen and have not been factored into their cold winter strategy. We very much wanted to offer warmth and support to those in need and I am personally very sad we are unable to. While you’re relaxing over the Christmas period, keep in mind our next seafront and beach clean on the 26th January at midday. I thank all those who have carried on with this task every time they visit the seafront. I will be down by Appley café with bags and gloves ready to join you all. Wrap up well and see you then. Happy Christmas and New Year to all residents, businesses and projects in Ryde, I look forward to a wonderful 2019 with you.

As we hit the festive season our local businesses will be hoping for a prosperous one. It has been a tough year for the small independents, with extremes in weather (remember the snow in March!), continued competition from online retailers, and now the local threat of increased parking charges throughout the town, our Ryde Business community could do with some Christmas cheer. PARKING CHARGES: The online petition for parking charges has seen over 3,000 signatures, and as the chair of the RBA we are now in talks with the Isle of Wight Council to see what can be done to develop a parking strategy that suits the need of the town. SHOP LOCAL: What people can do now to support the town, is to shop in them. Ryde has an incredible number of independent shops, the envy of many holiday makers who come to visit, who are from ‘clone towns’, with the same big retailers, displaying the same shop windows as every other place. Instead we have the quirky, the unique and fun. We have shops and cafes who are owned by the people you speak to when you walk in. SHOW YOUR SUPPORT: On December 6th we are holding a late night shopping event throughout Ryde. Shops have come up with lots of discounts, special offers and treats for the evening, with many open until 9pm, to give you plenty of time to get your present buying done. There will be street entertainment including Vectis Brass band and choirs to add to the festive spirit. HERE’S TO 2019: Small changes have a great impact when it comes to keeping our towns alive and well. For 2019, why not make a New Years Resolution of dedicating some of your shopping time to your local businesses. Pledge to get your meat, veg, and bread from the High Street shops some of the time, head to the farmers market on a Saturday morning, shop local first before going online, pop into a shop you haven’t been into before. You can make the difference to our retailers and your efforts will be appreciated. We would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and all the best for the year ahead. 6

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk I recently had the pleasure of laying the Isle of Wight Council wreath at the Wootton War Memorial at St. Edmunds churchyard, this year it was very well attended and it was good to see so many young people in attendance. At the council cabinet meeting held at Westridge, it was agreed that the council has agreed to set up a council owned local housing company. This will enable the council to build affordable housing that will be affordable to rent at below marked levels and shared ownership. To start with the council will use land in its own ownership. At the end of November the planning authority starts the consultation on the Island plan review. The consultation takes place for eight weeks and will set out how the Island will develop over the coming years. I urge everyone to take part and have their say. Planning permission has been granted for the five bungalows at 115 Station Road. I raised the concerns that residents raised with me with the office dealing with the application and these were taken into account when the decision was made. New Road upgrade is well underway, the weather has been reasonably kind to enable the work to happen. I thank residents for their patience as the work is being carried out. I am sure the wait will be worth it.

see any road gullies blocked and causing a problem, do give me a call. The council has started the budget setting process early this year and put all options out for public debate. One controversial area is the possibility for on street parking meters. I have serious concerns on the likely impact on the businesses that are struggling to survive like never before. I will work with cabinet colleagues to have an approach to help support small shops and businesses. As we approach the Christmas season, I often think of my time as a school boy at the old primary school in New Road and the build up to the Christmas party. Mrs Marler, the head teacher, who could forget her, usually started reading a passage from “Donkeys Glory by Nan Goodall, at about the start of December. The older boys would be sent off with teacher in tow, to collect the giant Christmas tree from a house in New Road. The tree was carried back by the boys, full of excitement. I guess there was no health and safety or risk assessments carried out, it just happened. The tree was put up in the hall and decorated with the old decorations and fairy tree topper. The paper chains, little coloured strips with glue on the end to lick and then linked together by the whole school and hung across classrooms. The postbox appeared like magic for all us kids to send cards to one another. I think the same box is still used today at the new school. And who can forget the last day of term! The carol service, followed by the Christmas party, all capped off by the school hand bell being rung to the entrance of Father Christmas with a small present for every pupil.

The late autumn this year has seen some spectacular sunsets over Wootton recently and the trees have been putting on a colourful show as the leaves start to fall and of course, this brings issues for the council and Island Roads, Such happy memories and a love for making sure that all ditches and water courses Christmas that lasts to this day. are kept clear of leaves and twigs or any other litter. And everyone can play a part in this by Have a Happy Christmas. keeping any neighbouring ditches clear. If you 8

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Although the weather has remained mostly mild it’s been quite stormy over the last month, the Environment Agency Flood prevention work on the Harbour beach and inside the Harbour has trundled on. At a meeting of the Ryde Flood Group Ian Miller our Environment Agency representative said that the new diverted Culvert will be dispersing the Monkton Brook into the Harbour by Christmas. Further works and tidying up will now continue until the end of February and will include removing the old culvert along with the redundant pipe that lays under the sand. It will be interesting to see what the tide does to the beach without it as it’s acted as a groin since installation causing the beach to follow it out further into the Solent.

the centenary of signing the Armistice to end the First World War on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 100 years ago. I was proud to see such a large crowd turn out to join us, remembering and paying respect to those who made the supreme sacrifice for us. There will be a good Christmas Carol singing evening in Vernon Square between 4pm and 6pm on Saturday the 8th of December. The next meeting of the Ryde Society will take place at the Esplanade Hotel at 7pm on Monday the 14th January. The #RydeSlide event will take place in Union Street on Sunday 21st July 2019 thanks to the continued support of Wightlink, HSS and many other loyal sponsors.

The brick cladding for the flood wall inside I would like to take this opportunity to wish Simeon Street Recreation ground has been everyone a Merry Christmas and a Healthy & delayed because the manufacturer had been waiting for the bricks needed to be delivered, Peaceful New Year. it was then explained that the first load is now with the manufacturer so we should hopefully start receiving the cladding and coping stones in December, there is also still unfinished landscaping, earth regrading and planting. All this remedial work is scheduled to be completed by the end of February but the main diversion into the Harbour will thankfully be completed and working in December giving local residents who live within the flood plain a long overdue Christmas gift of peace and relief from the constant fear of flooding that’s hung over them since 2010. I attended the Remembrance service & Armistice Day ceremonies at Ryde all Saints Church and Town Hall War Memorial to mark 12
