FREE Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Ryde & Wootton Area December 2019 Your Local Community Magazine

As the festive season is upon us far too quickly once again, our local businesses will be hoping for a prosperous one. We have seen a few changes in 2019, not least several well-established businesses moving to bigger premises, which is always a good sign. We are heading into 2020 with the great news of investment in the High Street through the successful Heritage Action Zone bid, seeing around £900,000 being put back into town improvements. We are incredibly proud of Ryde’s businesses. It has not been the easiest of years for towns up and down the country, but the dedication and commitment from the shop owners here means we are continuing to do much better than many others. THIS DECEMBER HERE’S HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT RYDE: Shop Local This Christmas: Using our small independent shops all year round helps to boost the local economy, but this December there is an added incentive. Look out for the Shop Local Ryde flyers in various businesses, spend £10 with them, and you can get entered into a draw to WIN a cash prize. Late Night Shopping: On December 5th there will be late night shopping with many shops open until 8.30pm. Look out for special offers and treats for the evening. The extra time to get your present buying done will be accompanied with street entertainment including Vectis Brass band, choirs, magicians, festive characters, and rounded off with a fire show from Ryde Extreme Performers on Western Gardens. To keep up to date follow RBA on Facebook @RBAIsleofWight We would like to thank everyone who supported businesses in Ryde this year, and wish you all a very merry Christmas.

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk I’ve been approached by many dog walkers who have expressed grave concerns with the proposed Ryde Beach consultation details for the “Public Space Protection” orders. I can assure everyone that there will be no official decisions made on PSP’s until after the consultation ends and all contributions are analysed. I would recommend everyone takes part in the online consultation (so tell your friends) as it will start early January and will run for 8 weeks. Many historic orders will remain the same as long as that is what the majority of the contributing general public want. There will be late night shopping and an official Christmas light switch on in Ryde on Thursday 5th of December, followed by free parking in long stay car parks for small business Saturday on the 7th December with further late night shopping, so bring out the family for a seasonal shop during Ryde’s Festive kick off week. Local consultation papers will go out in December for the proposed resident parking Zones in Monkton Street and Daniel Street. I would ask all residents to fill out the forms, whether for or against and would like everyone to understand that filling in the form does not mean you have to have a permit, its just to find out if 4

you’re for or against permit parking and limited time waiting zone in your street. After discovering upper Dover Street had not qualified for a resident permit and limited time waiting zone and discussing further with Aspire and local residents, I asked parking services to revisit the area and double check the figures. A revisit has proven worthwhile as it turned out a few flats had been missed and when the extra households were added to the figures it stacked up to meet the necessary criteria for further investigation. This is good news as hopefully upper Dover Street will now qualify for a local resident vote for or against a resident permit parking and limited time waiting zone making a great farewell achievement and thank you gift to Heath Monaghan who has worked with myself and fellow residents on introducing local parking zones in Ryde North East for many years. Good to see that the 5.2 million pound flood works scheme has now been officially completed and signed over to the Environment Agency’s Hampshire team in time for the rather wet autumn/ winter. This is a great time of year for a bit of local ornithology or bird watching on Ryde Beach, if you see one of our “Bird Aware” ladies (wearing marked green coats/ along the Esplanade they can tell you bird names and details, if

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle you ask nicely they can even let you have a closer look through their spotting scope. Could everyone to please continue to pick up any fallen leaves on their property to save them washing into and blocking road drains at the bottom of the hill. If anyone spots road puddles caused by blocked drains please let me or Island Roads know so the gully cleaner can come out and clear them (07768118766 for me) (01983 828500 Island Roads) I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful and Healthy New Year.

News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 www.facebook.com/yourvoicecountsryde I am very happy to let you all know the motion brought to form a Facilities and Assets Management Committee, was accepted at full council. This committee will give the town council greater oversight of services and facilities and how we can deliver them in the most cost effective way. The committee will be held in public, which for me was one of the main reasons for forming it. Ryde Town Council in May will become Super Town Council status, this means our budget has increased and we are dealing with so much more for our town. As such the governance regarding these services needed to be looked at and that meant making the process more transparent to you the public. You will be able to come and ask questions at the start of the meeting and be much more involved. I am very excited to be involved in a project with the police to deliver a world cafe in a few months. More details to come soon however it will focus on social capital which means us hopefully talking about issues affecting our town and bring forward some projects to help deal with them. Our hope for the project included; • For Ryde to be a better community • Reduce ASB • Better Partnership working • Create a safer community • Build a more positive perception of the police • Create better connections between partners • Getting tenants to contribute to the community • Get people talking 8

• Change people’s views about young people • Empower the local community to build a safer place to live • Bridge the gap between the police and young people I will let you know how to get involved as soon as possible however if you would like to talk to me about getting involved please call on 07506930109 I for one will be doing my Christmas shopping in Ryde, I love to support our town and keep our local economy going. Please get involved with Ryde we have some absolutely fabulous shops. Happy Christmas and please say hello if I see you! I have it confirmed that there will be NO parking charges for union street coming up in the next budget ... shop local. Remembrance, I attended the service at Lind Street memorial on the 11th November and was very lucky to go inside to take a look, very moving and beautiful. “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.” “The living owe it to those who no longer can speak to tell their story for them.” Please if you can take time to look at the Isle of Wight Council Consultations online and take part in them. This is really important as the council should know how continued over the page

News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni you feel on subjects in the public interest. If you don’t have access to the internet please let me know and I can let you know about current consultations. The link is https://www.iow.gov.uk/ and they can be found on the top right of the page. Cemetery gates West Street The opening times of the gates during term time is 9.30/2.30 During school holidays it will be open till dusk. One Great Island of People, Living in Many Communities Caring and Creative, Inclusive and Dynamic Striving to achieve equality of opportunity in all things and living life to the full

INSPIRATIONAL FUTURES

Our Island is steeped in history, has a workforce and community spirit to be proud of and its location inspires innovation and creativity I Believe that Island people deserve to be listened to and have their issues and concerns strongly represented at the highest levels of Government. By putting Island People First and at the centre of democracy. I will be voting for what best fits the needs of our Island People, in a way that is transparent, inclusive and community focused.

Our Health and Well-Being comes first

above all else and we must support our local NHS, and health workers in finding new ways in addressing the shortfalls of staff and funding. We must invest if we are all to live a good and long life. I will continue to fight for better funding with improved Health and Mental Healthy Services.

I Will Inspire Island Residents, encourage community development, raise peoples spirits and help improve our Island’s Profile. Our people are innovative and creative. I will seek to promote all that is good about our Island. The World We Live In Is The Source Of All That We Are And Hope To Be.

The Isle of Wight and United Kingdom is well placed with its innovation technologies and can make a significant contribution in supporting the reductions of pollutants. There are financial and employment rewards for our businesses in creating environmental innovations. Our Island is in a great position to test new technologies and green innovations. We must take climate change seriously.

ple when peo s en p p ha ly on , Change te, are engaged get involved, voer to demand it. and join togeth I would want to see a small Island visitor tax introduced to fund Cross-Solent Patient Transport and environmental projects. We need to assertively address safety concerns, have more police on the streets and respond quicker to criminal activity. Restorative justice needs to reflect the wishes of victims better. Environmental Health requires improved enforcement powers. Our Cross-Solent ferry operators need a centralised, co-ordinated out of town vehicle check-in. We cannot block Yarmouth, Fishbourne or East Cowes highways. We need to raise education attainment standards across the board, in Schools Higher Education and within existing workforce populations. This requires diversity of learning. We do need a fixed link feasibility study. The outcome of which must be put to our Island people in a referendum. Our people will decide what kind of Island they choose to live on in the future. Our Island is well placed for green innovation and testing technologies. We cannot keep building houses without providing services, jobs or infrastructure.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk A couple of weeks ago I witnessed a White Tailed Eagle flying over the Mill Pond and Firestone Copse, there was no mistaking such an impressive bird by its sheer size. Having lived in the village all my life, it really is surprising how many different birds of prey there are now. Now they are not persecuted for whatever reason, when I was younger about the only raptor was a Kestrel or less frequently a Sparrow Hawk. How things have changed, for the better I think. It is just so sad that so many of our smaller birds seem to be getting fewer, but I do not believe that the two are linked in any way.

called the delegated procedure and as such, do not need to go to the committee and are signed off by the chairman of the planning committee.

The Isle of Wight Council has published its intention to consult on Public Space Protection Orders, it had been intended for this to have taken place prior to Christmas, but this will now not happen until the New Year.

The work on the bridge at Park Road is ongoing which is also causing tail backs on Lushington and having looked at the work and what is being replaced, I do wonder if there was anything wrong with the bridge in the first place.

The planning application at Palmers Farm went before the planning committee in October, but despite residents and my best efforts the application was approved. I argued that the roads are presently in quite a poor state and struggle to cope with the amount of vehicles, now with the extra amount this development will create, our village amenities are under stress and the development is not sustainable and sadly for me the so called 35% affordable housing is nothing of the sort, affordable to whom I ask? Certainly not for first time buyers or young families looking to rent in the village they were born in.

Care in the Garden, the social enterprise nursery, run at Palmers Brook has been struggling because of the works at Park Road. I am full of admiration for John and his team that help people get much needed work experience and confidence. Can I urge as you are passing to call in for a visit and see what they get up to and perhaps buy a Christmas present or two.

At the moment things are quiet on the planning front , only small applications to deal with, which in the main are dealt with by planning offices, under what is 14

The new development on Lushington Hill has been named Hunters Moon Close. I found it quite appropriate because one evening when I was returning home from a meeting in County Hall, there was a lovely full hunter’s moon shining over the site as I passed by. Hopefully by the time you read this, the traffic lights will be gone from Lushington which have been causing residents grief.

I have asked Island Roads if they have any plans to resurface Footways, the concrete surface is in an appalling state and is in desperate need of some attention. I have had email exchanges with Island Roads because of residents’ concerns with the pedestrian sequence on the lights at the Cedars junction. Christmas Greetings to you all.

The Easy Things in Life Are you partial to a bit of yule log over the festive season but just don’t have the time to make it from scratch and at the same time you know some of the shop brought ones just don’t have that homemade feel? Well yule love this idea... All you need is a shop brought chocolate swiss roll of any size, ready made chocolate frosting, spoon full of icing sugar and some decorations. Simply cut a small end on the diagonal off the swiss roll and position on the side and sandwich together with a small amount of frosting. Cover the remaining swiss roll with the frosting and using a fork along the length to give a log like effect. Sieve some icing sugar over the top for a snowy feel and decorate as you wish with either marzipan or plastic decorations. It’s ok to cheat at Christmas... it’s called good time management. 19

Abuse has Evolved You don’t need a bruise to be abused. You don’t have to hit to hurt. Abuse is no longer just physical! Just because a person doesn’t put their hands on you, that doesn’t mean they aren’t abusive. ABUSE is control, blatant disrespect and hurtful words.

It doesn’t just happen to women. Men can be victims too. Break the Cycle CIC has been running since 2016 and was founded by Maggie Currie after she realised there was a gap in the support needed by people who had suffered domestic abuse. She has worked tirelessly to obtain grant funding and donations to run the FREE Mind the Gap courses which are aimed at anyone who has suffered abuse in any form. Their regular 12 week courses are attended by local men and women and they can learn how to rebuild their It is NOT okay confidence and move forward positively in their lives on their • To be humiliated in public own terms. The sessions help • For you to be forced to do something you do build support networks, learn not agree with new skills and increase • To be told you are ugly or unattractive self-belief. • To be forced to choose between your friends or partner/wife/husband • To be controlled • To be made to feel guilty for somebody else’s anger. It is their issue and not your fault.

These FREE to attend courses have produced amazing results by those attending. They have changed the thinking of some people in such a way as they have made the decision not to commit suicide. Others have discovered they are valuable members of society after continuously being told how worthless they were and some have gone on to start their own businesses, gone back into education or, just as importantly, escaped from their abusive relationship and now live confidently on their own terms.

The next courses begin in January 2020. The women only course begins on Tuesday 7th January at 10am and the men only course begins on Thursday 9th January at 6pm. Both courses are run at The Riverside Centre, The Quay, Newport. For more information or to book your place call 01983 754666 or email hello@breakthecycle. org.uk
