Och Aye The Moo I hope you like this month’s front cover photo of the Highland cows which was taken by David Trevan. Highland cattle with their long horns and their flowing coats, which gives them protection during cold winters, were originally from the Highlands and West Isles of Scotland and are now a welcome sight across the Island. David Trevan is a very keen amateur photographer who lives on the Undercliff and comes across these beautiful animals on his regular walks around St Lawrence. David has a passion for natural history and particularly wild flowers and before he retired he was a lecturer in Horticulture and Countryside Management at the IOW College and trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew with Alan Titchmarsh. He is a keen member of the IOW Natural History and Archaeological Society and puts many of his wildlife pictures online, in particular iSpot, an Open University website and iRecord, a website that enables people to record their natural history finds. A big thank you to David for allowing Island Magazines to share his photo which I am sure you will agree is stunning and has captured the beauty of these beasts. I hope we will be able to showcase more of David’s work in the future. Report from IW Councillor for Ryde North East - Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde, PO33 3RP. Tel 07792 670771 E: wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide We kick off 2017 with our local Flood Action Group meeting where we have invited Cllr Fuller (Executive Member for Flood Protection) and the lead officer Wendy. We need a solid commitment and allocation of about 700k capital funding from IWC to go towards the 400k from the flood levy and 3.7 million from Government to make up the required 4.8 million to complete the flood prevention engineering works. Needless to say our flood action group have met with all associated agencies every two Month’s since 2010, in 2013 the Government made all local Authorities the Responsible Flood Authorities and tasked them with progressing flood plans and improvements working with associated agencies.
Ryde Arena community Action groups nomination by Lisa Williams to be listed as an asset of community value has been successful. It now cannot be sold or disposed of without community groups firstly having the right to bid for it. If the owner (AEW) declares an intention to sell the premises community groups have 6 weeks to bid for the property.
AEW last offered the lease on the Rink to the Isle of Wight Council to buy back from them for 3 Million Pounds, this is surely an unrealistic sum for a now neglected and decaying structure. I’m still pushing the Council to act on the clause within the lease that states the premises must remain open to the public, but Council officers keep saying that the leaseholders must use “reasonable endeavours” to keep the building used which This has gradually brought us to an ultimate they say is open to some interpretation. They solution to end flooding for 327 local properties keep saying AEW (the leaseholders) might by the Environment Agency, without this argue that it is not viable as an ice rink and are 700k we lose all other funding & Nothing will “endeavouring” to look at alternatives. happen. I will keep you updated next month In my view if that is the case AEW would have with the outcome of the upcoming meeting. informed the Isle of Wight Council of their intentions before they forcibly closed the After the long summer of numerous local premises back in February. I’m disappointed at burglaries within the ward that culminated in the lack of real action on this and feel its just all associated agencies giving a commitment left to drag on and I’ve still not heard about any to work together to find a solution, I was meetings taking place between AEW and IWC disappointed to hear about yet another daytime even though I had been assured that would be burglary in Melville Street in early January. the next step back in December. The Police were looking for a man with a large scar on his cheek wearing a beret seen in the vicinity. He could have also had a stripy shirt with a swag bag by the sound of it (unbelievable). A 37-year-old man from Ryde has been arrested in connection with the incident Let’s hope this very local problem (always within a few Streets) gets sorted asap as we don’t this misery and fear to continue any longer. 4
Its sickening to see such a large past community hub closed mothballed and decaying on the seafront for so long, its not even mentioned on the Ryde Regeneration list of priorities. A few people have told me they’ve heard its going to be a supermarket, if that happened we would be the laughing stock of the South with a Supermarket trading on a Council owned prime seafront leisure site.

His customers are always happy with the work he does and below are just a couple of recent reviews he has received. Bought 2 flats: one in need of complete rewiring with new fuse box and down lights, the other (my home) a blank canvas, top to bottom job, 2 floors with loft conversion...down lights, all new sockets, redesigning , new boiler, new alarms, tv/satellite etc... Rich Electrics has done both and a top job too! Very helpful and friendly... Highly recommended! Thank you M.A. Had three jobs to do, one of them was extremely time sensitive. Rich came in and completed them all quickly but also to a high standard. Would highly recommend him! Cheers Rich!! G.B. News Report from Cllr Michael Lilley – Green Councillor for Ryde East Ward Email: michaellilleyiow@gmail.com or call/text 07769551578 WORKING TOGETHER FOR COMMUNITY ACTION IN RYDE - It is 10 months since I was elected to be your representative in Ryde East on Ryde Town Council. It was the first time for me as a Councillor and a steep learning curve. I have met many of you who are passionate about Ryde, Ryde East and particularly about issues that affect you. In early 2017, I am working with local residents on a number of specific issues which do need addressing and I outline some of them in my report. 2016 saw a growth in Ryde of community-led projects and campaigns. This is part of a growing movement spreading across the Island and Country where people are improving their communities by turning their passions into projects/campaigns that improve the world around them. Residents are seeing an issue or problem in the community and saying “Let us take action”. In Ryde there are many great examples and below is a few I have been linked to as follows: DOGS AGAINST MESS! – Tackling dog-fouling in Ryde East - My dog, Muddie, and I are teaming up with responsible dog owning residents and residents fed up with the increase in dog mess on our footpaths and greenspaces. A small group of irresponsible dog owners in Ryde, make it intolerable for others. A local mum contacted me about every morning when she takes her children to school she has to dodge the “poo” on the street. The campaign is still at planning stage and I am in talks with the local environmental officer. Muddie and I will be walking initially Ryde East ward regularly and making a record of the streets with dog mess and reporting it.
Westridge Farm off Hope Road. The application is for 80 houses and I voted with other Ryde Town Councillors unanimously against this development on the grounds that there is not the access appropriate for such a development from Hope Road and the traffic it would generate would increase a strain on existing increasing traffic on Marlborough Road. There is also concern about the abundant wildlife on the site and most importantly the threat to the viability to the dairy farm. We are awaiting a date for Isle of Wight Council Planning Committee meeting date and need keep the pressure on to start this development. See: www.facebook.com/savewestridgefarm JOBS AND COMMUNITY ACTION - I have recently been walking with the Greenhouse Foundation in writing a report on Green Job creation on the Isle of Wight and have a vision of a Green Business Park. This report is to be launched on 9th February.
Ryde has the highest population on the Island and there is a real need for local jobs. I am working with local community groups on not only creating employment but creating needed community facilities alongside. I am working with the Ryde Arena Action Group to take over the closed Arena site and re-establish the Arena into an Ice-rink and multi-use leisure facility. I am supporting Isle Access which plans in 2017 to open a café and information centre about accessibility and increase local tourism by making the town more accessible to families and older adults with special needs. This could increase tourism by 40% to the town and create jobs. Aspire on Dover Street is growing WESTRIDGE FARM/HOPE ROAD – Keeping and becoming a real HUB for community the Pressure on! - I am working with local residents on campaigning against the planning action and I am working with them to make sure Ryde East residents benefit from their application to build on agricultural land at initiatives

News Report from Cllr Michael Lilley ROAD SAFETY – LOCAL CAMPAIGN - Increasingly, local residents are contacting me about the safety of our roads and footpaths. The increased traffic and speeding on Ryde East’s 4 key roads (Great Preston, St. John’s, Marlborough and High Park) is making it dangerous. I have written and contacted the local Police and Island Roads but often seem to draw a blank. I am making it a priority to get answers and proposals to improve the traffic issues in the area and make it safer for pedestrians. I am working with local parents and grandparents about the crossings and lack of crossings to Oakfield School.
E A F
AGE FRIENDLY RYDE EAST - I am working with local organisations, St.John’s Church, Ryde Town Council, Age UK IW, IW Community Action, and local older residents about how we can support more effectively older adults living in Ryde particularly the frail elderly. Living in Ryde East (at the top of a hill), makes it difficult to access many of the amenities and services in the town and we are working on developing a local strategy to tackle this issue. There is a meeting at St. John’s Church on 1st February 2017 and you are welcome to come along and get involved. FUEL BILLS HIGH THIS WINTER! - I supported Footprints Trust to establish a Ryde Warmer Programme and this means you get FREE and impartial information about how to be warmer and save money on your fuel bills.
