Thank you for picking up a copy of ‘Your Local Community Magazine’ and welcome to the February issue. Without wishing my life away, I am always pleased to see the back of January - it’s always a bit of a dreary month and seems to go on forever!!! At the time of writing this there is a warning that a cold spell is heading our way so remember to keep warm and take care of yourself when you are out and about. If you have older relatives or neighbours please always take the time to pop in and check they are ok and to see if they need anything. This issue is packed with news and information and if you are looking to keep your brain active and alert I can recommend trying the puzzles on page 8.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I write my February report, New Road improvement works are still ongoing. Residents I have spoken to like how quiet the road is but want the works completed and hopefully this will be quite soon. The Park Road bridge is due to be strengthened this year, whilst I understand the need to carry out this work, I do have concerns that once the weight restriction is increased, the road will become subject to larger vehicles and these will be making the road less safe. The Island Planning Strategy consultation is ongoing and I urge residents to take part in the process. As I have said before this document will set how the Island will develop over the next 15 years and this is your chance to take part. February is always the month when the council sets its budget and this year it has been a very difficult process after years of making savings, it is becoming more challenging than ever but as, in other years, we have been presented with various options and from these the cabinet has filtered out the ones that are likely to have the greatest impact on people’s lives and removed, these same services can be delivered in other ways and hopefully the options left will deliver the savings needed, no matter how uncomfortable this might be. Over the last few winters we have had a large number of overwintering birds, most numerous being geese that like to graze the fields by the old mill pond. As yet they have not turned up. Whether this is because of the mild weather so far this winter, I do not know, but, we do have a number of Curlew, 4
probing the wet sticky soil for worms and invertebrates. Talking of the Mill Pond, one creature we do not see these days are eels. When I was young there were load in the Mill Pond and they were a good source of food for the herons. It was not uncommon to see a heron trying to swallow an enormous eel that was fighting back by wrapping itself around the heron’s neck. They could even travel across land to a farm pond. I could never work out how they knew the pond was there. Sadly after work was completed on the bridge in the 1980s the sluice gates were altered and access became all but impossible to them. On the planning application front there is little to report. The Palmers Farm application is not moving forward very fast. I am given to understand that the planning department is still awaiting reports to come forward. The former cattery site looks set to be approved but will be subject to stringent conditions. As I write the weather forecast does look as though we will get a cold spell and one thing as a local councillor, I am concerned about is our elderly residents, especially ones living on their own. I know they can be proud and independent but they become more vulnerable when cold weather hits so if you know of anybody who might be in this situation or if you are struggling to cope, do let me know and I will get help or even contact the parish council, it is what we are here for. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council please get in touch either by phone or email.

Watching you, Watching him... It appears that something has caught the eye of this magnificent kestrel on the front cover and luckily it caught the eye of local photographer Neal Staley who was able to capture this amazing shot. This remarkable bird of prey was spotted from the bird and squirrel hide at Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve and is just one of the many species of nature that Neal comes across when he volunteers at the hide a couple of mornings each week. Neal has taken to photography as a means of therapy following a serious car crash in 2012, which then resulted in him being medically retired in 2015 from the RAF after 24 years of service. His life changed dramatically on many levels and he has now found comfort in the nature and wildlife that surrounds us.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk
Temperatures have dropped since the start of 2019, (although fluctuating) if we get another lasting cold snap please remember to check your elderly neighbours are ok for supplies and heating. The Environment Agency Flood prevention Work trundles on in Ryde Beach and Simeon recreation ground, the beach works will be ongoing for a couple more months. The temporary pumps have now been removed and the pumping station switched back on to operate as designed because the outfall diversion into Ryde Harbour is now complete and operational The contractors will continue to work inside the fenced off areas on the beach removing the now redundant old outfall and vent pipes. New vent pipes are now in place above the diverted section and there to release air pressure when the tide comes in. The New internal Harbour deflector flood wall is complete and the sheet piles have been removed , the outside of the deflector wall has been designed to act as mooring for boats. I attended the BBC filming of a documentary, about our inspiring young skaters “The Wight Sparkles” and “Wight Sequins” who have continued winning trophies in some of the UK’s biggest 10
synchronised skating events, achieving this without a local rink of their own is outstanding. I was interviewed along with our MP and members of the Ryde Arena Group on Saturday 12th January. Not sure when it will be televised but it’s good news for Ryde Arena Group who have been tirelessly working to expose what’s been going on and gain moral support in their quest to bring Ice skating back to our Island. I was enthused to see “The Seaside Town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight” named as Britain’s property hotspot of 2018, with house prices rising by 10.24% With this story published in many national media outlets such as “This is Money” during a year when overall national house inflation is easing was quite a coup for raising Ryde and the Islands profile and attractions as a destination. Other than the fact that your property is worth an extra 10.24% if you live in Ryde, was also a perfect time of year to be highlighted in the media at a time when most decide where to take their vacation. It’s a good start to 2019 for the Island without a doubt.
News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 www.facebook.com/yourvoicecountsryde Here we are in February already can you believe it! January was a very busy time and I attended as many community events I could to show my support and give my ideas and feedback, one being the Ryde Society where we spoke about. My involvement in the parking petition amongst other issues. The main presentation of the night was made by the IW Council regarding the regeneration of Ryde.
separate event for the schools, which was hugely successful - I am hoping it will be bigger and better for 2019. Invitations for every Ryde School will have been sent and I am really looking forward to meeting you all and watch everything you grow. The project will be about healthy eating... I also look forward to tasting some of what you grow too!
Key areas they say have been highlighted to be looked at are Town Hall, Upper High Street, Western Gardens, Ryde Interchange, Ice Rink/ Car park, Ryde harbour, Appley Tower, Harcourt Sands, Nicholson Road and Wightlink – end of the pier. I would really like to hear from other residents, on what your thoughts are on how you would like to see Ryde look like in future years, especially Ryde’s youth, parents, sensory impaired, disabled to name a few. I want to make sure your views are being represented and your voices heard. Please get in touch on 07506930109 or email karen. rydesouth@mail.com. I really look forward to hearing from you. Ryde in Bloom preparations are well underway for this year, I am looking forward to the spring and seeing those flowers start to bloom. The school’s competition is going to be launched first and I have had productive and exciting conversations with Tesco, who I was fortunate to get sponsor the event this year. Last year is the first year I organised with the clerks to have a totally 12
The Respect Ryde Project. Find out how we can make Ryde Great again, beach clean, street tidy, community safety or by getting involved with other projects, I want to help to make our town cleaner, happier and safer. Let do it together! February will hold the council budgets, as the IW Council cut more services, we at Ryde Town Council look to see if we can/should take on services or lose them for good. This has and always been a serious and soul-searching time for me. I urge everyone to always get involved with consultations, keep an eye on what your councils are debating and voting on and let your local councillor know your thoughts and ideas on how we can deliver services. Agendas and minutes can be found to continued over the page
News Report from Councillor Karen Lucioni continued full council and committees on www. rydetowncouncil.org.uk. I have an open-door policy and welcome you contacting me. I am keeping a very close eye on the future of St Michaels Church in Haylands, I know that the IWC have promised to talk about this magnificent church at their meeting with the Diocese at the end of January so hopefully I can bring you more news soon.
